Outdated Trends Jennifer Lawrence Has Been Caught Wearing

There's no doubt that Jennifer Lawrence is a total trendsetter. From classy polka dot dresses to sheer shirts, JLaw certainly knows how to start a fashion movement. It's something that's come with time and experience, she told Harper's Bazaar in 2016. "I think I started paying attention to fashion as soon as paparazzi started happening a few years ago," Lawrence said. "I was not ready. I was like, 'What do I wear?' I had to start paying attention. When I turned 25 it got easier because I know, 'This is you, this is not you,'" she said.

But, let's be honest, it can be hard to keep up with the latest trends, even for someone as on top of it as JLaw. That means there are a few occasions where even this super cool superstar is behind the times with her clothing. Lawrence, despite her seemingly effortless ability to dress impeccably no matter the occasion, has been caught wearing an outdated trend or two over the years. These are those off-trend mishaps.

Her 2023 black, super structured dress

Jennifer Lawrence looked super chic in this very structured little black dress when she stepped out in New York City in June 2023, but it wasn't really in keeping with the season — or the trends of the season, for that matter. Summer 2023 was all about bold color, and we didn't see a whole lot of that in this all-black number. Lilac was a particularly hot shade at the time, as were pretty much all variations of pink, thanks to the summer's hit movie, "Barbie."

Not to mention that although the structure of the dress certainly flatters her body, overly structured garments weren't really in as a silhouette. The sunnier months brought to life looser more boho-esque style as well as more delicate sheer fabrics. Though this look is no doubt very stylish, arguably timeless, and really did look great on her, it wasn't exactly Lawrence's trendiest look ever.

Jennifer Lawrence's hoodie and trench coat combo was so 2018

Jennifer Lawrence looks incredible in everything, that's just a given. But when she stepped out in New York City in October 2023 while wearing a hoodie and long trench coat, it wasn't her most on-trend look ever. We certainly can't begrudge the "No Hard Feelings" star for dressing warm and cozy as the Big Apple autumn took over, but we hadn't seen hoodies and trench coats paired together as a trend since 2018.

The slouchy hoodie with the super structured coat had a bit of a juxtaposition that didn't fit with the trends of the time, nor did her black beanie. 2023's hat trends focused more on bucket hats and fedoras than the knitted kind. A few of the other coat trends we saw heating up as the temperature cooled down? Fall 2023 was more about leather-look coats and statement-making bold coats. Lawrence's long, black number just missed the mark when it came to what was popular.

Jennifer Lawrence wore jelly shoes ... in 2021

Okay, let's be honest. We'll always have a special place in our hearts for jelly shoes. They're fun, they're sometimes sparkly, they're comfy. What's not to love? With that said, however, this shoe style really found its footing and was super popular in the 1980s and 1990s ... not in September 2021 when Jennifer Lawrence wore them. The actor was pregnant with her first child when she was spotted out and about by paparazzi in a pink pair of the classic footwear. She rocked them while walking around New York in a pair of floral dungarees that perfectly showcased her growing baby bump.

One thing we will say, though, is that while jelly shoes weren't trendy at the time, they have had a bit of a resurgence since, maybe even thanks in part to JLaw. We saw jelly shoes return to the trend forecast for summer 2023, which is when Vogue declared the controversial shoe choice the shoe of the summer. So, hey, maybe Lawrence was behind and ahead with this trend?

Oversized everything was out by 2024

In April 2024, Jennifer Lawrence went for oversized everything as she hit the streets of her regular haunt (you guessed it) New York City. The only problem? The moment for oversized clothing had come to an end. Oversized oufits were outdated by 2024, after we'd seen them everywhere in the previous years. Lawrence didn't just go for one oversized piece, either. She wore a black oversized blazer over an oversized red sweater over baggy black pants.

Though we can't deny oversized dressing was still sort of around when Lawrence rocked the look (though fading), the trend wasn't as strong as it had been. Her look would have been more up to date had she opted for just one oversized piece with something else bang on trend. We will give her credit for her red sweater, though, as red is one of the hottest colors for summer 2024.

Jennifer Lawrence's 2021 waist belt was behind the times

You'll probably remember a time when everyone — and we mean everyone — was wearing waist belts. Waist belts in every shape and size were a huge trend around the early 2010s, coming after a time when super long slung belts ruled the runway and the red carpets. Jennifer Lawrence rocked a black waist belt while attending the Paris Fashion Week Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2021/2022 show in July 2021, when it wasn't exactly on trend anymore.

Again, this is another look where the star was dressed oh-so chic and very put together, but her look just wasn't exactly what we'd call trendy for the time. We do give the star points though for at least making her off-trend belt a total classic. She appeared to wear Dior's iconic Saddle Belt, which retails for $660. Though it wasn't the most on-trend during JLaw's Parisian foray, belts have made a comeback since Lawrence's 2021 appearance. Statement belts actually had a big resurgence for spring 2024, including waist belts.
