The Trendy Haircuts You'll Be Asking For All Throughout 2024

Every new year brings with it a host of new trends — 2023 saw us try out things like the butter yellow shade, stylish bubble-jewelry, and even woven bags. And there was plenty going on with our hair, too. Last year's big hair trends were all about fox dipping our locks and cinnamon cookie butter shades. But there's plenty more to look forward to in 2024 when it comes to getting a fresh cut. Trust us.

We're taking a look at some of the biggest hair trends expected to be hot as we ring in the New Year, and it looks like it's going to be all about long bangs, lobs, and even pixie cuts (yep, super short isn't going anywhere just yet). And that's just to name a few of the looks the world will be loving after singing "Auld Lang Syne." So, get ready to book your next hair appointment with newfound inspiration, because these are the cuts the experts are expecting to see a lot of in 2024.

The soft, French bob will soften out those boxier cuts

We saw a lot of the bob in 2024. Box bobs had a bit of a moment, as did the French bob. And, according to celebrity hairstylist Priscilla Valles, the soft French bob will still be hot in the New Year. "This cut is such a confidence boost. It originated in Europe in the 1920s, but has since become a universally-recognized classic. It's effortless and flirty, mimicking the Parisian and European style," Valles told Refinery29. This look is ideal for those who like a shorter style and will work best on those with slightly thicker hair, as it involves cutting soft layers into your locks.

The Hailey Bieber bob will be inspo, too

Sometimes, a star comes along and changes the game when it comes to fashion and beauty trends. And that woman right now is none other than Mrs. Hailey Bieber. Glamour UK asked ChatGP service Bard what we can expect to see in 2024, and it claimed that Bieber's stylish bob will be the look many people ask for. "This is a sleek, modern take on the classic bob. It's a great option for people with medium to long hair, and it can be styled in a variety of ways," Bard shared. Bieber's bob is slightly choppier, and she usually wears it to the chin with a center part.

You can also expect to go longer with a lob

Long bobs, aka lobs, are also on the hair menu for 2024. At least according to hair stylist and content creator Matt Newman, who told Refinery29 that a classic pop culture version of the cut will be the one we'll be seeing make a return — with a twist. "Think 'The Rachel' but slightly longer," he shared. And who are the ones who will really benefit from this look? Anyone who went for the bob in 2023. "It's going to be pervasive because it's the natural progression from the existing short hair cut trend," Newman said. "This past fall saw a huge trend of short blunt bobs and in 2024 we will be seeing all those chops being grown out." Celebrity hairstylist Mark Townsend agreed. "Many people are growing out of their shags and are going for either a longer style or opting to turn them into a version of a bob," he told TZR.

Or try a slightly shorter version of The Rachel with the kitty cut

If you like the idea of The Rachel cut but want to keep your hair a little bit shorter, then you may want to look into the kitty cut. This 2024 trend is slightly less shaggy than the classic Rachel cut, but uses layers for a sophisticated style that traditionally sits around the collarbone. It's best styled with the ends facing inward toward the face and has a somewhat elegant yet still somewhat undone look all at the same time.

Long bangs will also be more popular

If you're a fan of bangs but just don't love the upkeep, then long bangs may be the perfect solution. While past bang trends have seen short wisps of hair that sit above the brows, 2024's take on bangs will be all about longer tresses that are blunter and skim your eyelashes (yep, that long!) As Mark Townsend told TZR, "Bangs don't have to connect to face-framing layers anymore, and people are becoming more comfortable with a cut that lands just above the eyebrow to showcase the eyes." This look is ideal for those who want their hair to have some style, but don't want to do too much to the bulk of your locks. Long bangs suit every hair style from long to short and every texture too.

Grungy cuts are also making a comeback

Non-perfect looks are set to be hot for 2024, and that includes grungy cuts that aren't all about being super styled. Emma Vickery, creative director at Percy & Reed, told Who What Wear UK that this trend from 2023 will continue into the new year, and will involve harsher lines and strong cuts. These grunge-inspired looks can be any length, but should give off a casual and half-done aesthetic. Think something similar to a new twist on the mullet or choppy pixie.

Or keep it round and curly

Ideal for those with natural curly hair, a shaggy round cut is perfect for showing off your natural volume. This involves cutting your tresses into a softer, more rounded style, but letting your natural texture shine through. The round cut usually involves keeping your tresses a little shorter but tends to stay above the shoulders to keep the shape. This style can look extra gorgeous on afro hair or coil curls with natural movement.

Not cutting your hair will be popular, too

Hear us out on this one. It's always a good idea to get your hair trimmed. Regular trims keep it healthy and stop things like split ends from building up on your locks. But keeping your tresses super long is going to be a big trend for 2024. It may even involve adding long extensions to your tresses to really bring the length and volume. "In 2024, the [extension] trend will evolve to embrace individual textures and personalized styling, catering to the desire for a unique, luxurious look," Jason Crozier, art director at Neville Hair & Beauty, told Who What Wear UK.

Long, layered locks will also be in for 2024

Are you a fan of long locks with plenty of volume? Then long layers may be your go-to for 2024. "This year is all about soft, contoured shapes that fall gently and naturally into place," Paula Peralta, artistic director at John Paul Mitchell Systems, explained to TZR. This look is perfect for those who prefer to keep their hair long and like to spend a little time styling. That's because a long layered cut is ideal for styling into a glamorous voluminous style with plenty of lift.

And the butterfly cut isn't going anywhere

You may already have seen the butterfly cut around in 2023, and it won't be going anywhere as we move into 2024. Hairstylist Melissa Wade-Smith shared that this traditionally feminine look is perfect for anyone who's looking to frame their face. "[The butterfly cut] beautifully frames the face with soft flattering layers that offer softness and movement," Wade-Smith explained to Allure, adding that those looking to be bang on trend (and even combine two trends in one) can add texture and volume with extra layers.

Lived-in layers are also hot for the New Year

Another way to wear layers in 2024 is to have them cut into a more lived in look. That means layers that are a little less perfect looking and appear as though they've been in your hair for a while, and have grown out into less specific lengths and shapes. But they can be at any length in your hair. "Lived-in, softer shapes will continue to rise. People want the ability to be low-maintenance and versatile when styling to suit the busy lifestyle that they lead," Emma Vickery told Who What Wear UK.

But super short hair will still have its moment

While we'll be seeing some longer hair looks make a comeback in 2024, that certainly doesn't mean super short cuts will be going away completely. This year will see the textured pixie rise in popularity, according to Jenna Perry Hair hairstylist Rodrigo Padilla. To bring this look up-to-date though, you're going to need to make sure to include texture to avoid your tresses looking too dated. "The modern version embraces texture, making it suitable for a wider range of face shapes and hair types," Padilla explained to Refinery29. While this is flattering on so many, those with thinning hair can really benefit from a short cut as it's known to make your hair look fuller.
