5 Celebrities Who Prove Gardening Is The Chicest Hobby
Gardening has proven to be an incredibly en vogue hobby, with several celebs demonstrating just how chic the down-to-earth pastime really is. Interest in gardening really expanded during the COVID-19 pandemic, with the National Gardening Association reporting that 2021 saw the introduction of 18.3 million new gardeners. This hobby isn't reserved for retirees, either, as both millennials and Gen Z have demonstrated a notable interest in plants and gardening.
Some Hollywood figures similarly picked up the hobby over the course of the pandemic, while others have been wise to the benefits of gardening for a while now. It really does come with a ton of benefits, too. The practice is said to reduce stress and maintain cognitive function, while serving as an easy way to connect with the environment. The movement involved with gardening, such as walking, raking, lifting, and digging, is great for physical health, too. With all these benefits in mind, it's no wonder that celebs have been busy proving that gardening is the chicest hobby.
Pamela Anderson found meaning in her garden
Pamela Anderson nurtured her green thumb during the COVID-19 pandemic. She owns a seven-acre plot of land on Vancouver Island, having purchased it from her grandparents several decades ago. The "Baywatch" star set out to renovate the property after it had fallen into disrepair following her grandmother's death, with the renovation process being catalogued in Season 1 of the HGTV series "Pamela's Garden of Eden."
"When I moved home to restart [around the outset of the pandemic], I instantly thought, I'm going to make an incredible garden," Anderson told Architectural Digest in June 2025. "I started learning a lot about it and thought, 'This is how I want my life to be.'" Since then, the garden has become a family affair, with Anderson's sons, Brandon and Dylan, helping her expand her plot in different ways. She also moved her parents out to the property, mentioning that her mom keeps her updated on the garden when she's away.
Additionally, Anderson treats her hobby as a stress-free workout while also emphasizing the meditative qualities of the practice. "Something about nature and just being surrounded by this really positive life force, you can make better decisions in the garden, I think," she told People in July 2026, explaining that she likes to think over big decisions and next steps in the garden. "And it's [a] good workout!" the star added. "I think it's better than going to the gym, doing garden work."
Nicole Kidman loves to grow roses
Nicole Kidman is another celeb who gives gardening a good name. The "Practical Magic" star revealed her affinity for it back in 2015, with a Vogue profile revealing that she grew produce like apricots, plums, and lemons at her Australian home. While she hasn't spoken in-depth about the details of her garden, the Hollywood figure has revealed that she has an affinity for growing roses.
During the Vogue interview, which took place at the Nashville home she shared with her then-husband Keith Urban, Kidman was sure to point out an archway of roses. "You have no idea ... growing those roses in Tennessee," she said. "I sound like an old woman, but that is joy for me." She revealed that she liked to gift these blooms to loved ones when speaking to People in 2025. "My greatest gift to someone can be a bunch of my own wild roses," the star said. "So if you get that, it means you're super special."
Kidman occasionally shares glimpses of her beloved blooms on Instagram, taking to the platform in 2018 to share a close-up of her sniffing a bouquet of red, pink, and white roses. "Last of my homegrown roses this summer," she captioned the post.
Aly Raisman isn't afraid to get her hands dirty
Olympic athlete Aly Raisman found her passion for gardening during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, having announced her retirement from gymnastics earlier that year. "It's been really calming for me," Aly told Women's Health in May of the same year, with the outlet revealing that she had accumulated a total of 85 plants. "It brings me a lot of happiness and allows me to practice gratitude for where my food is coming from."
Appearing on the "Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness" podcast, Raisman revealed that it was actually her mom who got her into gardening, and the hobby became something that they share. She spoke about their passion when partnering with AeroGarden, a brand of indoor garden systems. "My mom and I love gardening together & we love that @officialaerogarden allows us to garden all year long," she wrote in a 2021 social media post. "While somehow my mom's gardens always end up looking better than mine 🤨😜😂, I still enjoy the process of watching the plants grow."
Raisman has continued sharing her gardening journey on social media, giving fans a look at the various flowers, produce, and herbs she's grown and harvested. "I'm trying to grow as many vegetables as I can — a lot of lettuce," she told Byrdie back in 2021, per Club Pilates. "My goal would be around the spring, summer, fall, that I don't have to buy any vegetables from the grocery [store]."
Jennifer Garner shows love with her personal and family gardens
Jennifer Garner's garden is both a nod to her family's roots and part of how she practices love. She lives in a custom-built home in LA, and the property contains a small orchard of fruit trees and a vegetable garden featuring herbs, produce, and pest-resistant flowers. "Growing up the daughter of a farmer and having such connections to my family farm, it just truly thrills me," she told Architectural Digest.
On top of connecting her to her roots (pun intended), Garner's interest in gardening is also tied to her children. The "13 Going on 30" star shares three children with her ex-husband Ben Affleck, and the two are among former celebrity couples who have co-parenting down to a science. She spoke about growing her own produce and the lack of transparency in the food industry back in 2015. "Food sustains our bodies, minds and souls, and as a mother, I feel it is my responsibility to know what I am feeding my family," she told E! News.
Garner's farm-fresh produce reaches far beyond her loved ones, though. Her aunt and uncle own a 55-acre farm in Locust Grove, Oklahoma, which is also a supplier to Once Upon a Farm, Garner's childhood nutrition company. "I wish a farm-fresh, all-organic, simple-ingredient, no-sugar-added, delicious, convenient option like O'Farm had been available when my kids were little — and love offering it to families now," she wrote on Instagram for its 2026 launch.
Julie Andrews cultivated an English garden
In addition to famously portraying flower seller Eliza Doolittle on Broadway, Dame Julie Andrews enjoys cultivating her own blooming oasis in real life. The "Sound of Music" star grew up in Surrey, England, but has resided in The Hamptons since the 2000s, initially relocating to live close to her daughter. She has an English garden in Sag Harbor, growing flowers like hydrangeas, daffodils, and roses. "I can't say that I'm an enormously knowledgeable botanist, but I know what I love and I know how to make a garden," she told The New York Times in 2015.
If you ever doubted that the Dame actually gets her hands dirty, Andrews mentioned that pruning is her go-to gardening practice, echoing sentiments about the calming nature of gardening. "I love to prune my roses. That's the one thing I really feel I do pretty well," she said. "It's like if you're a painter, you can forget everything else while you're doing it."
Andrews actually has a variety of roses named after her, too. She received the honor at the Chelsea Flower Show in 1992, with a portion of the bud's sales going to her charity, the Julie Andrews Appeal. The plant is a hybrid tea rose known for its fuchsia petals, bright yellow at the heart. If gardening is a sophisticated enough hobby for the spectacular Julie Andrews, then you know it's undeniably chic. For more, check out tips for nailing the trendy garden girl aesthetic.
