When it comes to mother-of-the-groom style, there are a few parameters that every mom should follow, and this includes celebrities. The tradition is that the mother-of-the-groom shouldn't detract attention away from the bride on her big day, nor should the mom try to steal the show in any way. As such, the standard-approved dress code for moms is that they stick within the confines of the dress code of the wedding, be it formal or casual. They never wear white — a rule that applies to all guests, unless expressly instructed to do so by the couple themselves — and they dress in a flattering, unflashy way that's elegant and refined. 

However, weddings are rife with fashion faux-pas, and this includes celebrity weddings. There are some A-list mothers-of-the-groom who've flubbed up in one way or another at their son's big day. To be fair, mistakes can happen to anybody, and it's likely that people weren't intentionally trying to steal the show from the couple. In several other cases, the mother-of-the-groom absolutely nailed the assignment, looking festive and radiant as a way to honor the happy couple.

Victoria Beckham stole the show at son Brooklyn Beckham's wedding to Nicola Peltz on April 9, 2022. For the occasion, Victoria wore a silver slip dress — that looked like it was a liquid metallic texture — made by her eponymous brand. 

The dress was deemed a little too slinky by some, with others stating that it looked more like negligee rather than something traditionally suited to a mother-of-the-groom. The dazzling ensemble certainly earns a spot amongst Victoria's most iconic outfits that we'll never forget. 

Denise Welch stunned in a sensational antique rose gown for the wedding of her son, Matty Healy, to model Gabbriette Bechtel on July 18, 2026. On Instagram, Welch noted that the dress was from Solace London and she said of the event, "The happiest time of my life." For those who want to steer clear of the fashion mistakes every mother-of-the-groom should avoid making on their son's wedding day, this dress is a great example. It's elegant and flattering; indeed, Welch looks gorgeous, but it's also not likely to outshine the bride. 

Rosie O'Donnell was the coolest mother-of-the-groom ever when her son, Blake O'Donnell, married Teresa Garofalow Westervelt on August 16, 2024. In a sweet caption sharing their dance together, Rosie wrote, "So much love."

Jane Seymour looked radiant at the wedding of her son, Kris Keach, to Miso. The couple had a wedding in Malibu, California and followed this up with a second wedding in Seoul, South Korea, in July 2022. 

To honor her daughter-in-law's customs, Seymour wore a hanbok, a traditional Korean dress. Seymour looked absolutely lovely in a pink gown with a baby blue cropped jacket. The outfit featured pink ribbons as well as a corsage. According to Hello!, Miso's parents had the outfit custom made as a gift for Seymour. 

Mary Steenburgen was a vision in her beautiful gown at the wedding of her son, Charlie McDowell, to Lily Collins in September 2021. The couple got married at Dunton Hot Springs in Colorado, and Steenburgen stunned in a brown custom Ralph Lauren gown. 

Steenburgen's mother-of-the-groom dress had a touch of medieval flare thanks to the elaborate belt, the dramatic folds, and long sleeves. The chocolate brown velvet texture made it the perfect dress for fall, too.
