The infamous, unforgettable chartreuse shade is trending hard as a sweater tone; the Grinch-green shade was hugely popular during fall 2025 and it has made a comeback a second time around. "Chartreuse, like the 'personality plus' friend at the party, is enjoying a little time on stage at the moment," Amy Ellzey, principal consultant at Colour Me Beautiful LA, told Women.com exclusively. The bold color gets its name from the rarified Green Chartreuse, a French liqueur made in the Chartreuse Mountains in southern France by an order of Carthusian monks. The herbs and botanicals that make up the liqueur give it an unmistakable green color. Then the concept of chartreuse expanded beyond drinks to include the lively color. "Sitting right on the border of yellow and green, chartreuse can be tweaked to work with both warm and cool undertones for all to enjoy," Ellzey told us. 

Since vibrant green is the color trend that comes celebrity approved, it's time to dig in to chartreuse after so much quiet luxury minimalism that steered clear of bright tones. "Fashionistas are grateful for this colorful breath of fresh air after a muted parade of earthy browns, wines and grays," Ellzy added. It's time to embrace the boldest sweater color this fall. With autumn comes darker days, and the warm pop of color from chartreuse makes it feel like a cozy hug. 

Since chartreuse is such an unmistakable green, it's helpful to consider its different shades to accurately match it to individual skin tones. This is particularly important with chartreuse sweaters, since the color sits close to the face. Amy Ellzey explained to Women.com exactly how to do this. "Chartreuse operates like a chameleon in that many shades pass for this yellow green color," she began. "Those with a light or bright tonality to their hair, skin, and eyes, look great in the classic chartreuse color. Those with a deep or warm presentation look fabulous in chartreuse's sister color, lime. Finally, those with an overall cool tonality will look best in icy green, and those with a soft or muted overall look should stay closer to sage." 

This wide array of chartreuse tones makes the color more versatile than one might expect; because of its wearability, chartreuse is easily counted among the colors you'll be seeing in everyone's wardrobes this fall. Since scarf cardigans are the multitasking fall trend we'll be seeing everywhere, consider a scarf cardigan in chartreuse, or opt for a simple button-up sweater. And as Ellzey points out, chartreuse is actually very easy to wear. In terms of pairing chartreuse, there are the obvious colors, like cream, black or gray. But there are also much more interesting pairings, like burgundy or chocolate brown. Navy and cobalt also look striking with chartreuse, creating a visual harmony for fall.
