Jami Gertz's Stunning Hair Evolution, In Photos
On the surface, it may not seem like "The Lost Boys" and "Twister" actor Jami Gertz has changed her tresses much over the years. Take a closer look at her hair evolution though, and it's clear the billionaire (yes, with a b) owner of the Atlanta Hawks has actually played with her 'do a lot over the decades. Her hair has caught so much attention that there's even a YouTube tutorial dedicated to getting her in-demand look from "The Lost Boys." But that's no surprise considering her hair transformation is this stunning.
Though she's mainly stuck with brunette, side-by-side pics highlight Gertz's gorgeous gray hair transformation. The actor and businessperson has slowly made the inspiring move from brown locks to silver strands and has managed to maintain healthy hair in her 50s and beyond. She's taken leaps from long hair to short as well, and she's been known to rock everything from curly, potentially permed, locks to wavy and straight styles.
1985: Jamie Gertz hit the scene with long, curly hair
During a photo shoot from around 1985, shortly after Jami Gertz appeared in "Square Pegs" and "The Facts of Life," she had oh so '80s brunette hair. Her curly, just past shoulder length locks had plenty of volume and texture, which could have been down to a perm, and the young (she was around 20 at the time) rising star appeared to be rocking her natural shade, as she wasn't showing obvious signs of root growth nor highlights or low lights.
1991: She pumped up the volume and cut trendy bangs
By 1991, Jami Gertz had married Tony Ressler and was seemingly looking for a more mature look as a wife. Enter bangs. At the "Rush" premiere she showed neat, eyebrow skimming bangs that she'd curled under, likely via a round brush, for flattering volume. Bangs were huge in the '90s, so this style proved the star had her finger on the pulse. Her strands were tamer than in the '80s, but still had plenty of volume thanks to the XL bouffant on her crown.
1996: She got the chop and wore a shiny layered bob
We saw Jami Gertz walk on the short side at the 1996 "Sleepers" premiere. The star had chopped several inches off her locks and removed her bangs to create a full, glossy, layered bob. The cut made sense, as the actor had become a mom and may have been looking for a more manageable length. The actor's 'do still had plenty of movement and volume at the roots though, and she'd added more dimension to her glossy brown hue via subtle toffee highlights.
2004: The star had fun with pigtails
Jami Gertz's short 'do didn't last too long, as she was back to long by 2004. This time though, she had some fun with her long hair. The actor was snapped with healthy-looking wavy pigtails under a bucket hat while smiling at The Painted Turtle Camp. She hasn't publicly confirmed if she wore hair extensions, but her locks looked full and healthy on both sides. Gertz likely had the means to invest in extensions though, as she was starring in a lead role in the comedy "Still Standing" at the time.
2005: The actor served up beach curls at a Playboy event
Shoulder length, voluminous curls were the name of Jami Gertz's game by 2005. At the Playboy Beauty Party, the actor wore her hair in a shoulder grazing 'do with a soft center part and flattering curls, which may have been her natural curl pattern. The look was totally casual and beachy and looked gorgeous with her tan skin. The undone aesthetic made sense considering the event was held at Bridgehampton in New York, which has multiple beaches.
2006: Jami Gertz's hair was long and layered
Jami Gertz made another major hair change by 2006 when she appeared at the Beverly Hilton Hotel with a long, super glossy blowout. Her hair was straighter than in previous years, but she kept some movement by curling the ends. Her layered locks had stunning chestnut undertones that glistened and she added a simple headband to push her mane away from her face for an easy yet glam aesthetic. She'd returned to movies and starred in "Keeping Up with the Steins" that year, which may have explained her more high maintenance 'do.
2007: She joined the ranks of celebs rocking sleek bobs
In 2007, Jami Gertz showed her dramatic haircut at the opening of the Broad Contemporary Art Museum. The "Sixteen Candles" star opted for a choppy, layered, face-framing bob with a side part and plenty of volume at the roots. The look marked one of her shortest and straightest cuts to date, but the choppy layers ensured it still had texture. Gertz was in good company though, as multiple other celebs made headlines for their bobs in 2007, including singer Rihanna and fashion icon Victoria Beckham.
2017: The actor took a risk with her curly half up, half down hairstyle
Jami Gertz took a risk with her hairstyle in 2017. She attended the LACMA Art and Film Gala with a voluminous and eye catching half up, half down 'do. It included a handful of her curls pinned to the top of her head, while the other half cascaded down her back. The event was presented by high fashion house Gucci, which may explain why she tried the creative, avant-garde look that added serious height atop her head.
2019: She started her journey to gray hair
2019 marked the first time in Jami Gertz's long career that we'd seen her deviate even slightly from brunette. While out in Los Angeles, she'd seemingly adopted gray blending (which puts a twist on salt and pepper hair) to let her dark gray roots subtly show so she could start her journey to going fully gray. Her wavy mane was just past shoulder length, with her glossy, brown color part way down. The transitional hair technique trended in 2026, proving Gertz was ahead of her time.
2025: Jami Gertz fully embraced her gray hair
By 2025, Jami Gertz rocked gray hair with confidence. She debuted her healthy-looking, almost fully gray locks at SXSW 2024, but gave fans a better look at her new shade at the "Magic City: An American Fantasy" premiere the following year. The star's mane was dark gray but with lighter silver strands on the right side of her face, and she wore it in trendy, modern waves. The actor didn't speak publicly about her new hue, but may have been looking for a more low maintenance hairstyle the year she celebrated her 60th birthday.
