The 2026 Hair Trends That Will Help You Transition To Gray
Transitioning to gray is a huge hair trend in 2026. We saw gray-haired model Stephanie Cavalli strut her stuff at a Chanel Paris Fashion Week show earlier this year, showing how the shade that was once considered aging can be totally youthful and oh so fashionable. But, according to Stanley Nolan, Ogle School cosmetologist and beauty education specialist, there are a couple of ways to go gray this year that will keep you firmly on trend. Nolan exclusively tells us that one of the hottest ways to rock gray hair with confidence is via the gray blending technique. "Instead of trying to create a sharp line between your natural gray and your colored hair, gray blending uses highlights, lowlights, or glosses to soften the transition so it grows out more naturally," she exclusively explains to Women.com. Nolan notes this technique is a solid option for those who don't have time for regular trips to the salon, as it creates a softer dimension that will make silver roots less blatant alongside your current shade.
Another way to transition your locks is via gray money pieces, aka highlighted strands either side of the face. Instead of traditional blond highlights though, it's all about silver. "It highlights the silver that's already coming in and creates a modern, intentional look rather than making it feel like you're 'growing out' your color," Nolan shares. This trend is ideal for those looking to lighten their mane while creating a flattering, face framing effect.
The third major trend? Soft layers and/or textured bobs. "[They] pair really well with gray because they add movement and help showcase the different tones and dimensions that natural gray hair has," the expert tells us. And there are plenty of short styles for older women with gorgeous gray hair that radiate confidence.
Celebrities are getting in on 2026's gray hair trends
Need a little inspo for 2026's hair trends ideal for gray transitioning? Celebs have got you covered. Actor Jessica Chastain has been subtly embracing her gray hair this year via the gray blending technique. She was spotted at Paris Fashion Week with inconspicuous gray roots alongside her signature red mane, which perfectly demonstrated how to nail the blending technique for a soft, flattering lean into gray without harsh lines that can look unkempt and aging.
Then there's Chastain's fellow actor Salma Hayek, one of the celebs who have long embraced their natural graying hair. In May, she showed how to rock the money piece trend as she posed with her signature darker locks with lighter gray pieces either side of her face in a series of Instagram shots. She showed how money pieces can be a fun way to test silver tresses without making a dramatic change right away.
"I think the culture is changing and people are redefining what beauty looks like," Stanley Nolan exclusively tells Women.com of why 2026 is going crazy for gray. "Gray hair used to be seen as something you had to hide, but now it's becoming a symbol of confidence and authenticity. Many clients are also looking for lower-maintenance routines, and transitioning to gray can save both time and money in the long run while keeping their hair healthier," she adds.
