Allison Janney's Hair Transformation Proves She Can Wear Any Color (Including Gray)

Allison Janney is a Hollywood treasure; she's funny, she's talented, and she's stunning. While there's so much to know and love about her, Janney's hair journey is its own inspirational tale. As a young actor, Janney rocked brown and auburn-toned hair. As she got older, she shifted into lighter shades. Then, for a brief period of time, Janney proudly showed off her gray locks. 

In February 2021, Janney sat down with Ellen DeGeneres and spoke about her new look. The actor explained on "The Ellen Show" that during the 2020 pandemic, her gray roots started coming in. Rather than dye her hair again, she decided to cut it short and embrace the look. "I just decided that I wanted to be free from hair color and hair extensions and so this is the most authentic I've been," Janney explained. Her cropped pixie cut was an ideal example of one of many perfect haircuts to show off gray hair. Plus, Janney joined the ranks of celebrities who embraced their graying natural hair color. While she looked great with her silver hair, Janney didn't stay gray permanently. After the pandemic ended, Janney moved on to blond and looked equally stunning, proving that the actor can make any hair shade look stellar. 

For those who loved "The West Wing," a political drama from the early aughts, Allison Janney stood out as a star. She played C.J. Cregg and the character arguably launched her career. So when Janney arrived at the Emmy Awards in Los Angeles in September 2000, she looked like a trophy herself. Her hair was a light, strawberry blond with highlights. She had it cut in a flattering lob with side bangs. A lob is a perfect haircut if someone's ready to dip their toes into short hair, which Janney later would. 

When Allison Janney attended the Primetime Emmy Awards in 2006, her hair was much darker. She opted for a rich, chocolate brown tone, which was extra flattering because it made her blue eyes pop. This was further amplified by the dramatic, side-swept bangs; they added a lovely frame to her face. Janney kept the warm tones throughout, wearing a crimson dress and tonal, red lipstick to add to the wow factor. 

Allison Janney kept the dark streak up a few years later. When she attended the opening night of "The Pee-wee Herman Show" on January 20, 2010 in Los Angeles, California, her hair was a notable, deep brunette. The vivid espresso shade was arguably the darkest hair color Janney ever wore. She added life and movement to the style with shorter, side-swept bangs that framed her face nicely and showed off her bold hair color. 

When Allison Janney attended the Critics' Choice Awards on January 11, 2018, she showed up with lighter brown hair in a hot toffee shade with subtle highlights. The cut was longer and full of face-framing layers, giving Janney a charming, Farrah Fawcett look. She expertly matched her eyebrow shade to her new, lighter hair color and the overall effect was soft and flattering. It was definitely a very romantic hair style for Janney. 

Clearly, Janney loves changing up her hair. Only two months after Allison Janney sported her Farrah Fawcett look, she went for the chop. When she attended the Film Independent Spirit Awards on March 3, 2018 in Santa Monica, California, Janney rocked a chic bob. What was more, her hair color looked a shade lighter. The tone was more of a strawberry blond with highlights than it had been only two months before.

Allison Janney seriously changed things during the pandemic. In addition to speaking with Ellen DeGeneres, she spoke with Drew Barrymore about her gray transformation. "I cannot tell you how amazing it is to feel free. Free from hair color and hair extensions and hair tapes and blah blah blah," she said on The Drew Barrymore Show in April 2021. She called her gray hair "heaven" and added that she loves running her hands through her hair. Clearly, those hair extensions were a pain.

While Allison Janney looked stunning with gray hair, it wasn't a permanent choice for the actor. In September 2021, she went back to blond, exhibiting the new color at the Primetime Emmy Awards on September 19, 2021 in Los Angeles. Janney's hair had a rich color story, with darker shades of ash blond around the nape of her neck and warm highlights at the top of her head. Clearly, Janney wasn't interested in going back to hair extensions, as she rocked a fresh pixie cut. 

Allison Janney leaned into one of her lightest shades of blond ever in 2024. While walking the red carpet at the Primetime Emmy Awards on September 15, 2024 in Los Angeles, California, Janney looked radiant in an icy platinum shade. She made the color look even more stunning with a retro, '60s-inspired flippy bob that curled her ends upward. The dramatic side part only made the whole 'do look even more intentional and styled. On the whole, this was one of Janney's best hair looks ever. 

Allison Janney clearly decided to stick with her blond tone, because she continued to stun in the shade when she attended the premiere of her HBO show "Miss You, Love You" on May 7, 2026 in Los Angeles, California. Her chic bob had a classical flare to it, with soft curls adding romantic, old Hollywood movement to her look. The blond was light enough that it made for an easy transition from gray, and Janney looked radiant and sophisticated with her blond color.
