Christina Aguilera's Chaotic Talk Show Outfit Signals It's Time To Move On From The Sheer Dress Trend

Christina Aguilera made an appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show on December 9, 2025 and while the visit was festive and fun, Aguilera's sheer dress left us scratching our hands. For the occasion, the "Genie In A Bottle" hitmaker wore a white and red Di Petsa Lace Desire Nude Mini Dress, paired with red, thigh-high Christian Louboutin Miss Z Botta Alta 100mm Boots. While the outfit may have come with a luxurious price tag– the dress and shoes retail for $2,420. and  $2,895, respectively — the sheer overlay, complete with a dangling tail of tulle, looked unusually cheap and chaotic, especially for a pop star.

While some praised Aguilera's effort at getting into the Christmas spirit with the red detailing, others found the look off-putting. On the Reddit thread r/whatthefrockk, people vented their dislike of the sheer detailing, while still maintaining their love of Aguilera. "I don't like the dress truthfully, I'm not a fan of the material print nor the tail, but I love her vibe and she truly does sell the garment," one person wrote under a Reddit thread discussing the look. "It's weird and I hate the see-through trend generally but it kind of works on her?" another wrote, being generous. "I think it sort of looks like a craft project, with the sideways tulle and that train. Interesting choice though, and I mean that in a non-derogatory way! The boots are a diva move," another added. Clearly, people love Aguilera, so even a flop of a dress doesn't deter their loyalty to the icon. But more than anything, the look begs the question: has the sheer dress trend run its course?

The sheer dress trend has had its day

The transparent clothing fad became popular in the early 2020s, reaching a peak around 2023, with stars like Margot Robbie and Megan Fox wearing the style on red carpets. Online, there was talk about how to ace the sheer clothing trend, from pops of skin to fearless transparency, with many refusing to let go of the sheer trend even as the fall made cold-weather dressing essential. But part of the problem was that the trend led to wardrobe malfunctions, like the fashion disaster that Kimberly Guilfoyle faced all because of one sheer dress.

In recent years, people have voiced their frustration with the sheer dress trend for myriad reasons. On the Reddit group r/unpopularopinion, one user noted that the trend promotes unattainable body standards since it shows so much skin, and doesn't leave an inclusive space for all body types to shine. Indeed, many of the celebrities who were seen sporting the trend had slimmer body types. Another user compellingly claimed that the sheer dress trend doesn't actually require any fashion or artistic talent. "I find that with the exception of a handful, there is no design. No real fashion. Just underwear and something sheer over [top]," they wrote. Another complained that the issue wasn't related to modesty but rather a lack of effort. "[The sheer dress is] just about being naked in public and that's just laziness," they commented. Whether we'll continue to see sheer clothing on red carpets remains to be determined, but based on reactions to Christina Aguilera's outfit, the trend's big moment may soon be over.
