Though sneakers are among the most versatile shoes and can easily transcend any season, they're particularly handy in fall. This sportier shoe keeps you comfortable, warm, and dry as the weather turns cooler, while also offering more opportunity for fun than the chunky, practical boots that usually dominate the last few months of the year. So, to find out what's hot in fall 2026, we spoke to Cynthia Kennedy, personal stylist, image consultant, and creator of Your Style Transformation Academy, who exclusively revealed the season is blowing in some super fun shapes and styles — and even some bold animal prints!

"There's a growing understanding among women that they don't have to sacrifice comfort in order to look put together and polished. Today's sneakers come in beautiful suede, leather, and satin, and embellished styles, and they can look just as intentional as an ankle boot or a loafer," Kennedy explains to Women.com exclusively. "They're also really versatile with a fall wardrobe, whether you are wearing denim, a suit, or a midi skirt," she adds, noting, "I love how a sleek sneaker can balance the weight of heavier fall fabrics, ensuring an outfit doesn't come across as too serious." And serious is certainly not the name of the game when it comes to fall 2026's hottest sneaker trends.

Embellishment and color is (finally!) back -- and it's bold

Good news if you're a fan of sneakers with color and sparkle, because Cynthia Kennedy exclusively tells us that embellishments (think the likes of rhinestones, studs, and metal hardware) and fun colors are back in a big way for fall 2026. "A bit of embellishment allows for individuality without completely changing one's style," Kennedy says exclusively. As we already know, white sneakers are officially outdated in 2026, which has made room to inject more fun into our footwear. The shades to reach for? According to Kennedy, burgundy, sapphire, yellow, and emerald are hot (and amongst some of the colors in everyone's wardrobes for fall 2026).

But while those hues and reflective extras may sound scary or hard to style, they're easier to wear than you might think. "Let the sneakers be the fun part and keep everything else fairly neutral," Kennedy recommends (you could take inspo from Meghan Markle's neutral monochrome outfits to make these sneakers work). "It's an easy way to make clothes you already own feel new again without rebuilding your wardrobe," she adds. MKOPWOX's Chunky Suede Sneakers in Burgundy hit multiple trends thanks to their material, embellishments, and color. There are also Lucky Step's Retro Casual Sneakers in yellow, which feature suede accents.

Animal prints are making serious seasonal statements

Ready to walk on the wild side with your fall 2026 sneakers? Try Madden Girl's Giia Sneakers in Leopard Multi, as they offer a way to make a fun and bold sneaker statement. Skechers' Bobs Billie Sneaker in Leopard do too. "While leopard is still the most familiar print, we're seeing snake, zebra, and cow prints are making an appearance as well," Cynthia Kennedy exclusively shares, proving there really is a print for everyone this season.

Just remember that animal print footwear doesn't have to be daunting. To make styling them easier, Kennedy recommends reducing the prints to their most basic colors. "My advice to clients is to treat animal print like a neutral," she says. "A printed sneaker with jeans, black trousers, or an otherwise simple monochromatic outfit gives you just enough personality without dominating the entire look," she adds. If a full-on, super bold, animal print sneaker is a little too much for you, though, try a shoe with a more subtle take. A sneaker that features the print as an accent, like the Lucky Step Casual Low Top Sneakers in Brown, will keep you on trend but will feel much easier to incorporate into your wardrobe.

Low-profile and retro sneakers are perfect with a bulkier outfit

If bold colors, animal prints, or embellishments aren't your thing, that's okay. Amid the resurgence of loud sneakers, Cynthia Kennedy tells us exclusively that low-profile and retro-style sneakers are still very much trending — perfect for those who don't want to make too much of a statement. "We've definitely seen a shift from those oversized, chunky sneakers to slimmer silhouettes that sit closer to the foot," she says.

This less attention-grabbing style, yet still super comfortable footwear, is the perfect partner for a bulkier 'fit, which many of us gravitate towards in fall to stay warm. "I love these with straight or wide-leg jeans, tailored trousers, or even a midi skirt because they don't visually weigh down the bottom half of your outfit," Kennedy tells us. Lucky Steps' Retro Gum Sole Sneakers in Beige/Red will help you tap into multiple trends in one. Gola's Elan Sneakers, which come in mustard/gum as a slimline nod to the yellow sneaker trend, will too.

Suede sneakers in rich shades will be on everyone's feet

Suede is having a major moment in the sneaker world. Cynthia Kennedy exclusively reveals that this trend shift moves away from overly practical footwear and steps into pieces that feel fun and stylish instead. She recommends buying pairs in classic fall shades like chocolate, camel, or burgundy, which are fun neutrals that can easily integrate into your wardrobe without needing a clothing overhaul. We've already seen several celebrities rocking brown sneakers this year, including actor Lily Collins and model Gigi Hadid, so you know you're in good company with this trend.

Cushionaire's Belinda sneakers in Brown offer plenty of personality thanks to their frills and sheer ribbon lace-up, making them super fun for fall 2026. To get in on the burgundy trend that's been everywhere all year, try Project Cloud's Comfortable Fashion Sneakers in Burgundy. This shoe could also comfortably see you through a busy or wet day thanks to its sturdier sole.

Satin is the versatile material of the moment

Cynthia Kennedy also exclusively tells us that satin is a hot sneaker material this fall. "Satin has moved beyond the sneakerina into more traditional low-top and derby-inspired sneaker silhouettes this fall," she says, so steer clear of that outdated shoe trend. "To see such an eveningwear fabric on a practical shoe is unexpected and fun," she adds.

Because satin is widely considered a dressier fabric, these sneakers can easily transition from day to night. "I'd pair them with trousers and a blazer for work, or with a dress or skirt when you want something feminine but don't necessarily want to wear heels," Kennedy suggests. The UniqueStride Retro Satin Suede Sneakers combine satin and suede while hitting the mark on the chocolate hue that's uber popular this fall. Equally, Reebok's Ultra Lo Sneakers come in Blackberry Athleticgold Gum, which is a mix of yellow and burgundy (another of the cooler season's popular sneaker colors).
