Summer 2026 is right around the corner, but the impending sunshine won't be imposing a golden glow on every shoe. In fact, it'll leave a number of now-outdated shoe trends out in the shade. We spoke to Katie Schuppler, wardrobe stylist and founder of KS Style Consulting, who exclusively reveals the shoes that will not only keep you trendy in the warm weather, but also comfortable and cool too. "Some trends that we are getting away from this summer are sky-high heels, the super chunky 'dad sneakers,' and any shoe that is overly embellished," she exclusively tells Women.com. Overly chunky sneakers have been outdated shoe choices since last summer, while sky-high heels were declared out earlier in 2026 — so Schuppler's picks will come as no surprise to those keeping an eye on coming and going trends.
There are a few dated versions of current trends to avoid, too. Ballet flats have had a revival in recent years, but the classic design with a bow on top is now considered dated. Try a simpler version instead (Schuppler recommends Maison Margiela's Tabi ballet flats). Speaking of flats, overly rounded toed flats should be pushed to the back of your closet in favor of the more on-trend pointed toe version that can help elongate the leg.
Swap summer 2026's outdated shoes for sneakerinas and thong heel sandals
If you have any of summer 2026's outdated shoes in your regular warm weather rotation, don't fret. There's plenty of stylish footwear to try instead that will give your feet a treat and keep you on trend — no matter what the sunny season throws at you. Katie Schuppler exclusively recommends swapping chunky sneakers for slimmer pairs in neutral shades. She also highlights the rising popularity of sneakerinas (a cross between sneakers and ballet flats), which offer style and practicality. Think Vepose's Satin and Suede Gat Sneakers in cream beige or the VIVAIA Women's Cristina Square-Toe Sneakers in light gold to combine multiple trends.
If you're heading to a more formal event like a summer wedding, Schuppler tells us, "[Instead of high] heels, thong heel sandals are a major trend!" CUSHIONAIRE's Marlin Low Kitten Heel Thongs in chocolate offer versatility via the deep brown color, while the gold buckle brings a touch of glamor without being over-embellished. It also taps into the kitten heel movement that started in spring. For events you know you'll be walking on grass, like a BBQ or garden party, try the Vince Camuto Women's Cianna Thong Wedge Sandal in golden walnut leather for something more understated or in Egyptian Gold for a dressier event.
"Another major trend is a derby shoe instead of a sneaker for a more elevated fashion-forward look! Look for the comeback of clog mules and sandals as well," Schuppler also tells us. She suggests upgrading your shoe closet via the Leather Derby from Zara or Free People's Cecily Clogs.
