'When's The Wedding?': Kate Hudson Normalizes The Long Wait & Brushes Off The Outdated Question

Kate Hudson has been engaged to her fiancé, Danny Fujikawa, since 2021, and she has openly discussed their long engagement. In the world of wedding planning, it can be very stressful to ask the engaged couple to lock down a date for the big day. But Hudson, in her relaxed and affable way, shrugged off that outdated question and explained her logic. 

First, Hudson lamented about the cost of getting married while speaking with her brother, Oliver Hudson, on their shared podcast Sibling Revelry on September 8, 2026. Secondly, Hudson spoke about the challenges of whittling down the guest list. "I still am not married. I'm just engaged, and I keep thinking about [the] wedding, like 'What are we gonna do?'" Hudson explained. "And then every time we start thinking about who we have to invite, Danny's like, 'I just want a small wedding.' I'm like, 'Our family alone is like 50 people.'" Oliver agreed, stating that for his wedding to Erinn Bartlett in 2006, they insisted on only 80 guests. 

But Hudson's honest admission speaks to many of the stressors modern brides-to-be face. Weddings can be prohibitively expensive; they're loaded with expectations from friends and family wanting invites, and the pressures of a wedding can take some of the joy out of the big day. So, Hudson's insistence on navigating her engagement in her own way is a helpful blueprint for other women planning weddings. 

As Kate Hudson and musician Danny Fujikawa enjoy their engagement, wedding planning is clearly something Hudson doesn't mind talking about, but not in a stressful way. And for anyone considering a wedding, Hudson's mindset is worth replicating because wedding stress can get out of control. A 2023 Zola survey found that, among 4,000 engaged couples, 60% were overwhelmed about the budget and 54% were stressed about finding a venue. That doesn't sound very fun, and Hudson's fresh approach offers a different perspective. 

More and more engaged couples are choosing to do things differently, foregoing the traditional expectations around weddings that lead to whopping bills and inordinate stress. Many brides in 2026 are saying goodbye to traditional wedding styles, choosing to switch things up in order to allow for self-expression. In fact, many stunning celebrity wedding dresses are totally outside-the-box. It wouldn't be surprising if Hudson opted for an unconventional dress when she chooses to get married. 

The same free spirit applies to the day itself. There are ways to curate a wedding aesthetic that's unique to you and your loved ones. The point is that the engagement and the wedding itself should feel authentic to the bride and groom. Any outside pressure is just noise, and there's no reason to let that impact a couple's big day, as Hudson herself shows.
