Jennifer Lopez's Beauty Evolution Through The Years, In Photos
Jennifer Lopez is an icon with many talents. Not only is she a hugely successful singer, actor, and businesswoman, she's the ultimate poster girls for ageless beauty. Lopez has developed an enviable youthful glow since she burst onto the scene in the '90s, and she has people all over the world scrambling to learn her beauty secrets. That's no surprise considering side-by-side pics make us wonder if J-Lo's even aging. Lucky for us, she's no gatekeeper. In her 2022 Vogue Beauty Secrets video, Lopez swore by the products in her JLo Beauty line, revealing she regularly uses the That Hit Single face wash and That Big Screen Moisturizer. On the makeup side, she's also a fan of Yves Saint Laurent's Touche Éclat to keep her undereyes looking bright and the Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer from Fenty Beauty for luscious lips.
But Lopez's beauty is far from just skin deep. She puts her gorgeous evolution down to how she treats others as much as the products she swears by. "One of my big beauty secrets is that I try to be kind to others and lift up other women," she told People. Whatever's keeping J-Lo looking so good though, her physical transformation from a young makeup trend follower to global superstar who's perfected the dewy skin look has left our jaws "on the floor."
1992: Jennifer Lopez was all about trendy makeup when she hit the scene
As we saw from Jennifer Lopez's style transformation, she fully embraced '90s trends early in her career -– especially with her makeup. She often wore brown and red-orange lipsticks, two of the '90s most popular shades. During a 1992 photoshoot, she also tapped into the minimalist aesthetic that ruled the era. She paired brown matte lipstick with nearly bare lids and just a little mascara and no false lashes. She had a very similar look during another shoot, but swapped to a brighter lipstick with a slight sheen.
Still, Lopez was yet to develop her signature look. She swapped between dewy and matte finish foundations (matte was the go-to in the decade) and, though her makeup was trendy, the bold lipstick, short lashes, and lack of lip gloss aged her even though she was only in her early 20s. Lopez admitted she doesn't regret any of her past makeup aesthetics though and jokingly told Allure, "I stand by all my awful looks!"
1997: She embraced dark lipstick but was yet to discover her signature bronzer routine
Jennifer Lopez would later become best known for her effortless tan glow, but in 1997, she was still yet to discover that iconic look. At the time, she still rocked trendy, powdery '90s makeup, including at the Oscars and the "Anaconda" premiere. As seen in photos from the event, the star forwent the flowy, bronzed look and faux lashes. Instead, she had a lighter, matte complexion that appeared to be the same color overrall. She also embraced dark lipstick (she clearly loved the metallic brown trend!) and rocked thin '90s-style brows.
By this point, Lopez's star was rising. She told Movieline in 1998 she felt she'd made it to the bottom of the A-List, largely thanks to her role in the 1997 movie "Selena." But J-Lo was yet to build her crack team of beauty experts. "Her makeup wasn't amazing," Lopez's then-future makeup artist Scott Barnes told Refinery29 of her early days in the spotlight.
2000: J-Lo met the makeup artist who changed her look forever and tried blue eyeshadow
By 2000, Jennifer Lopez had started to carve out that signature J-Lo glow. At the 2000 Grammy Awards, where she wore her infamous low-cut Versace dress, she'd drastically overhauled her makeup. She wore blue eyeshadow (a Y2K makeup staple) and glossy, sparkly pink lips (another huge trend of the time). The fun, youthful aesthetic made her look years younger than her age. She wore a similar makeup look at a Versace fashion show that year, but opted for a nude lip that arguably washed her out due to her freshly blond locks. Lopez left the flat, light matte foundation in the '90s though, instead opting for a fresher, dewy finish that made her skin look healthy, not dull.
Around this time, Lopez was fast becoming a household name. She'd released her first album, "On The 6" in 1999, bolstered her acting career since "Selena" with roles in "Anaconda" and "Out of Sight," and embraced her sassy J-Lo moniker. That likely meant more budget for a glam team. Scott Barnes, who would go on to work with her for decades, recalled meeting Lopez at a 2000 photoshoot. "We were trying to establish her signature look. I used light, oils, and moisture to let her skin shine through, almost like watercolour. It wasn't harsh and it wasn't heavy. That became her signature," he told Refinery29. "We tried something new: a glow-y skin look. Everyone loved it."
2002: The (original) Ben Affleck years saw a softer side to her makeup looks
In 2002, Jennifer Lopez was loved up and preparing to marry Ben Affleck (the first time), which appeared to impact her beauty aesthetic. The star glowed with a softer, romantic beauty look, including pink shades and glossy lips. That spilled over into her movies. While filming "Maid In Manhattan," her character Marissa Ventura had J-Lo's new glow. Scott Barnes threw back to the iconic on-screen look on Instagram in 2024, and wrote, "A masterpiece of makeup, this look remains an iconic blend of elegance and charm." Fans couldn't get enough of her lit from within look, as Lopez's skin looked incredibly healthy, set off by her warm, dewy blush, bright undereye, and shimmery champagne eyeshadow with a highlighted inner corner and full, fluttery faux eyelashes. "Iconic & Legendary, this look will live on for decades," one Instagram user commented. "This was such an incredible look on her. That soft [peach] on her skin made her glow," another wrote. Despite being in a new decade, Lopez still seemed to be growing back her brows, which were still on the thinner side.
Her makeup was just as dewy and understated in the music video for "All I Have." The singer and actor leaned into cool, feminine tones, including frosty lipstick and lip gloss, pink eyeshadow, and heavy highlight down her nose. The look gave her a youthful glow we didn't see much from her early in her career and kickstarted J-Lo's journey toward looking like she was aging backwards. Barnes explained why they avoided red lipstick in their early days of working together, telling Refinery29, "Everyone wanted to stick the Latin girl in a red lip; it was so tired. So we stuck to the bronzed look."
2005: The star's penchant for heavy eyeshadow dramatically defined her peepers
Jennifer Lopez opted for a heavier eyeshadow aesthetic by the mid-2000s. At the 2005 Billboard Latin Music Awards, she perfectly nailed a smoky eye via her dark blue and black eyeshadow look with glossy, nude lips. Her skin was as dewy as ever, but the bold color and dramatic lines of her shadow marked a more experimental phase — one we hadn't seen much of before. That may have been because Lopez worked with celebrity makeup artist Molly Roncal for the event over Scott Barnes. Roncal recreated the look for a YouTube tutorial, where she revealed one of Lopez's biggest makeup secrets; applying eyeliner in the inner corner of the eye.
Lopez dialled her cosmetics down a little at the "An Unfinished Life" premiere, but rocked a similar (though toned down) smoky eye and nude lip. By this point, she'd split with Ben Affleck and married Marc Anthony and was seeing more success in the music world. She released the album "Rebirth," which represented a new life phase. "I'm having tons of rebirths," she said at the time (via The Guardian), and that was demonstrated by her transformational beauty era.
2008: The new mom broke beauty roles with heavy eyeshadow and lipstick
It's usually suggested that a bold eye looks most flattering with a nude lip and a dramatic lip best suits a more naked eye. But Lopez proved why there's always an exception to every makeup rule in 2008. The same year she welcomed twins with Marc Anthony, which may have given her more confidence to try new looks, she paired glossy, red lips with a smoky eye and long, faux lashes for a Macy's event. To prevent the look overwhelming her features with too much product or color, she kept her blush, bronzer and eyebrow products to a minimum. In 2023, she shared her top tip for rocking red lipstick on Instagram, revealing she pairs it with nude lip liner. "Some people think you should do a red lip liner. I don't love a red lip liner. I like it to be neutral. It makes the lips look fuller and plumper," she explained.
Dramatic eye makeup was also the name of her game at a Christian Dior fashion show, but in a more ethereal way. Lopez ditched red lipstick for a nude shade and wore heavy, sparkly, blue eyeshadow. Her skin was still glowing though (of course!) thanks to her warm-tone blush and she appeared to wear a slightly darker shade of foundation for a warmer glow.
2011: She reached new heights of the J-Lo glow amid her popstar resurgence
In 2011, Jennifer Lopez had a major musical resurgence thanks to the success of her huge hit "On The Floor" and the album "Love?" – and her makeup mirrored her popstar status. She threw her beauty look back to her Y2K popstar days at a Golden Globes afterparty via a very 2000s frosty, cool-toned look, including icy eyeshadow and shimmery lip gloss. But, unlike the early days of her singing career, she'd perfected her signature skin glow. The star also made a rare move in her beauty look book by adding heavy, black, liquid eyeliner to her upper lid that almost camouflaged her long lashes.
When it was time for her actor side to come out though, she changed things up. At the Met Gala, she had a decidedly more sophisticated aesthetic, including a glossy, bright red lipstick with a darker red lipstick or liner on the outer corners. She paired the dramatic lipstick with long, spidery lashes and well-groomed brows, which were much fuller than in the '90s and early '00s. Her eyebrows had done a lot of growing so she could embraced the thicker, well-defined brow trend that was huge in the 2010s.
2015: The superstar experimented with darker shades in her mid-40s
In 2015, Jennifer Lopez was in her mid-40s and still experimenting with her beauty looks. The star voiced a character in the animated movie "Home," which may have brought out her fun side. At a Fox event, she embraced monochrome beauty via a shimmery, copper eyeshadow and matching metallic lipstick. She was also in a copper mood at the Tony Awards. There, she paired a dramatic reddish bronze eyeshadow with a deep berry red lipstick that marked an out of the box move for this superstar.
Three years later, Lopez put her years of experience with makeup to good use when she launched her own line with Inglot. Scott Barnes opened up to Refinery29 about the venture, sharing, "I asked her the other day, 'Why did you create this cosmetics line?' And she said, 'I don't like makeup that feels like a mask. I find Instagram interesting, but it doesn't look real. Real women don't look like that.' Her message has always been to love yourself the way you are, and that's what she's doing with her beauty line," he said.
But while Lopez had previously leaned into beauty trends, she told PopSugar she'd learned to focus more on what works for her. "It's more about the total look from head to toe than sparking trends. Sometimes we push the envelope and try something that's fresh and new, and other times it's all about the tried and true," she said.
2019: J-Lo let her long lashes do the talking
By 2019, Jennifer Lopez started really embracing bold, 2010s makeup and became a big fan of XXL faux lashes. At the Met Gala, she made a daring beauty move when her makeup artist paired multiple shades of purple eyeshadow with larger-than-life, voluminous lashes that demanded attention. To let her eyeshadow shine, she kept her lip makeup to a minimum, opting for a light, pale pink lip gloss. "I think sometimes we think that a darker lip liner is better, but honestly, a lighter one is what's going to make your lips look bigger and more plump," she'd later tell Harper's Bazaar of her go-to nude lip hack. "I also only line the outer part of my lips, and not all the way to the edges, which gives them that centered, pouty look."
Lopez's lash game was just as strong at an event for her movie "Hustlers." That time though, she rocked a more sophisticated bronze look under her wispy, fluttery eyelashes, plus heavy gloss and lip liner. The change up made sense, as the star turned 50 that year but told Entertainment Tonight she was still embracing all sides of herself. "I'm youthful and timeless at every age," she said.
2021: Jennifer Lopez launched her own beauty line (and shut down Botox allegations)
Following the 2020 COVId-19 pandemic lockdown, it seems Jennifer Lopez reverted back to ol' reliable when it came to her makeup looks. At "The Tender Bar" premiere in 2021, her skin was heavily bronzed and dewy with a cool-toned, grey smoky eye and nude lip that appeared like a more polished version of her 2010s aesthetic. At the Venice International Film Festival though, she once again proved her penchant for changing her look and tapping into all sides of her personality. Her makeup artist used warmer-toned products, including more subtle brown shadows over her lids, which gave her a more natural-looking, tan glow.
The actor and singer looked like she'd barely aged in decades and even her partner at the time, Ben Affleck, couldn't get over her youthful aesthetic. "Where are you keeping the fountain of youth? Why do you look the same as you did in 2003 and it kind of looks like I'm in my 40s...at best?" he joked during an InStyle interview. That same year though, while speaking to People, Lopez shut down speculation she uses Botox.
That same year, Lopez put her decades of exposure to the beauty industry to good use when she launched her own beauty line, JLo Beauty. She told People the venture was years in the making. "Everywhere I went, I felt like everybody was always asking me about my skin. And as I got more mature, the questions came more often," she said.
2024: J-Lo's makeup turned romantic amid her reconciliation with Ben Affleck
By 2024, Jennifer Lopez had married Ben Affleck, which had a clear influence on her aesthetic. She turned toward softer, more feminine fashion and makeup amid the release of her album "This Is Me... Now." "'This Is Me... Now' was a moment in time that was captured that was inspired by falling in love at that time," Lopez told Vogue. We saw that in her Golden Globes makeup. The star wore romantic pinks shades on her eyes, cheeks, and lips to create one of her most feminine, monochromatic makeup moments since she first fell in love with Affleck.
Lopez wore romantic makeup in a different way at the Met Gala. Instead of heavy dark shades and dark eyeliner on her eyes, she opted for what appeared to be a bare lashline with orange eyeshadow and long, fluttery eyelashes. Of course, her bronzed glow and highlighted nose was still part of her look, as were her nude, super glossy lips, but the super frosty shadow in the inner corner of her eyes gave her an angelic luminosity. She'd also learned a lot over her years experimenting with makeup, including a hack to lift the face. She told Vogue she applies a contour product a little above her cheekbone rather than below. Sadly, Lopez and Affleck's love story didn't last and they announced their split that August.
2026: The star proved she's still not done experimenting
Although Jennifer Lopez may have perfected a signature look over her decades in the spotlight, she made it clear in 2026 she may never stop experimenting. The "Atlas" actor made a surprise beauty move at the "Office Romance" premiere, as she hit the red carpet with fluffy brows that were only party filled in. The look appeared to be J-Lo's way of temporarily doing the fake bleached brow trend of 2023 in a more flattering, wearable way. But she hadn't given up her signature glam. At the Golden Globes, she looked tanner and more glowy than ever when she stepped out with a heavily bronzed face, cat-like eye liner and sleek lashes, plus super glossy, overlined, nude lips. Around this time, J-Lo dressed for revenge after divorcing Affleck, so it makes sense that she moved out of her romantic era in favor of bolder, sassier looks that gave us independent woman vibes.
Much of Lopez's penchant for beauty experimentation stems from her ever-evolving life. "I think of myself five years ago and I'm a totally different person now. And a lot of that has been the journey, not just the beauty journey, but the inside," she told People that year. "I really feel like I'm a different, more self-realized, self-aware person, and that contributes to the beauty," she added. The star also put her age-defying look down to skincare and self-care consistency, as Lopez got candid about how aging impacted her wellness routine. That's something we can't see the superstar ever giving up, which means we likely still have plenty of beauty inspo to look forward to from this timeless icon.
