Jewelry Styles Perfect For Older Women
For women over fifty, fashion can sometimes feel limited by age constraints. While some jewelry mistakes are undoubtedly aging you, expert Tali Kogan explains that this era of life is more about embracing your true self. The stylist and founder of MALKARI by Tali spoke exclusively to Women about the jewelry styles perfect for older women.
"Refreshing your jewelry collection after 50 is not about replacing who you were, it's about honoring who you have become," she says, having recently turned 50 herself. "And there is no better way to celebrate your evolution than through jewelry that feels elevated, authentic, and fully aligned with your essence." Though there are stunning jewelry trends perfect for mature women, the expert explains that this demographic shouldn't feel confined to what's popular.
"This chapter is less about trends and more about alignment," she continues. "Your jewelry should reflect the woman you have become, confident, evolved, wise, magnetic, and unapologetic." In this way, ranging from statement necklaces to expressive gems, these expert-approved accessories make the perfect addition to any mature fashionista's jewelry box.
Elevate any look with an artsy brooch
After declining in popularity in the '80s, brooches saw a major revival in 2023 because they offer older women an avenue for chic self-expression. "I especially love them for women over 50 because they bring artistry, individuality, and sophistication to a look," stylist Tali Kogan exclusively tells Women. Pieces like stylized fish and ribbon-strewn corsages have shown up on contemporary runways, but there are also all sorts of vintage pins to be found in thrift shops and online. The great thing about this accessory is just how vast and varied it can be, paving the way for each wearer to show off a bit of personality.
As our expert explains, brooches are also a super-easy addition to most outfits. "A chic brooch on a blazer, scarf, or button-down shirt can instantly elevate even the simplest outfit and transform it into a true fashion statement," she says. Style icons like Jackie Kennedy provide timeless inspiration, while there are plenty of ways that contemporary fashion lovers are modernizing the jewelry. Online content creators have used brooches to cinch a shirt waist, decorate a bag or phone case, and even elevate a ponytail as a hair accessory.
Make a statement with layered and bib-style necklaces
While jewelry can provide the perfect finishing touch to an outfit, it can also serve as the focal point, and Tali Kogan recommends bib necklaces for older women ready to make a statement. These necklaces sit high on the collarbone and resemble the shape of a child's bib, being made up of everything from beaded layers to metal plates.
In place of the colorful and ostentatious pieces of the 2010s (see the millennial-loved bubble necklace), modern iterations of bib necklaces favor purposeful craftsmanship and sculptural elements. As an example, think of the elegant, yellow diamond-studded necklace worn by Gwyneth Paltrow at the 2026 Academy Awards or the bold, starburst spotted on Demi Moore at the Cannes Film Festival. While these stars sported their statement pieces with strapless gowns, Kogan specifically suggests that mature fashion lovers pair such pieces with collared shirts.
"This styling trick instantly looks chic, sophisticated, and fashion-forward while beautifully framing the face and neckline," she tells Women. "Many of my clients over 50 especially love this style because it creates an elevated focal point and brings confidence to the neckline area elegantly and effortlessly." Though these celebs and styling tips provide great inspiration points, mature women should ultimately opt for whatever pieces feel most representative of themselves.
Imbue your jewelry with meaning to really express yourself
Continuing the theme of self-expression, jewelry that carries meaning and significance is an expert-approved option for older fashion lovers. "At this stage in life, women are embracing who they truly are, and their jewelry becomes a beautiful expression of that energy," style expert Tali Kogan tells Women. While this concept can be taken in many different directions, the MALKARI by Tali founder mentions spiritual jewelry as a specific example.
This can mean religious symbols, such as the cross of Christianity or the star and crescent of Islam, and extends to crystals and gems with spiritual or symbolic significance. For example, amethyst is associated with healing and spiritual wisdom, while clear quartz is said to increase energy and promote concentration. Mature women can also look to birthstones as another source of inspiration, with the month-associated jewels readily translating to jewelry.
Additionally, Kogan points to pendants and medallions with symbolic meaning as another great choice. "Many of my clients over 50 are especially drawn to symbols like the lion, which represents courage, power, and confidence," she explains. "Or the horse, which symbolizes freedom, movement, and expansion." So, if you have an animal that resonates or a meaningful symbol in your life, consider incorporating it into your accessories.
Opt for lightweight earrings that are still expressive
Natural bodily changes can lead to women feeling limited in their jewelry options, with many finding that their ear lobes appear bigger over time. "What's actually changing is the soft tissue, meaning the cartilage of the external ear or auricle, and the lobule, or ear lobe," Dr. Nina Shapiro, a pediatric ear, nose, and throat specialist, told HuffPost. "Aging reduces our levels of collagen, which gives integrity to skin and cartilage, which leads to stretching of those tissues."
While heavy jewelry can exacerbate this phenomenon, mature fashionistas conscious of their appearance don't have to give up expressive pieces. Instead, earrings made with lightweight materials offer a solid alternative to traditional metal pieces. There are plenty of unique and handcrafted earrings made of aluminum, while natural materials like wood and seashells make for light, boho-inspired pieces.
For those who don't favor statement earrings, simple studs and metallic huggies offer another avenue, curating a classic and sophisticated style. These can even feature the aforementioned crystals and stones for a personalized touch. As with all of these recommendations, it's really about staying true to yourself with the help of purposeful pieces.
