If you're above a certain age, it's possible that summer's approach induce a certain dread due to on inevitable task: swimsuit shopping. Between the constantly changing trends and styles, it can feel like a chore trying to find something that fits without making you look like you're trying to hard.
But it doesn't have to be so stressful. In fact, swimsuit shopping can be a confidence-boosting experience — if you know what you're looking for. That's why we asked Cynthia Kennedy, personal stylist, image consultant, and creator of Your Style Transformation Academy, to talk us through summer 2026's biggest swimsuit trends and explain why they're perfect for older women looking to beat the heat.

"We are long past the notion that once you hit 50 you should wear some matronly, overly conservative number meant to hide your body. Today's swimwear is much more about confidence, comfort, support, and personal style," Kennedy tells Women, exclusively. "I am noticing more women are drawn to pieces that are a bit more polished and elevated, ones with thoughtful designs like strategic ruching, square necklines, adjustable straps, textured fabrics, compression, and cut-outs that are intentional and not just there to be revealing," she adds. No matter if you're into texture, minimalist one-pieces, or swimwear that can easily assimilate with your resort wear, we've got the trendy garment that will have you heating things up no matter where you take a dip this summer.

Ribbed, crinkled, and ruched designs are elevating swimsuits this summer

One of the biggest summer 2026 trends in swimwear is pieces made from elevated materials. Think ribbed, crinkled, and/or ruched fabrics that add texture to your one- or two-piece. "They add some dimension and elegance while still being very flattering," Cynthia Kennedy tells us of why this look is ideal for those in their 50s and beyond. "Strategic ruching in particular is a great tool because when you have a shirred waistline in a solid color it is the closest equivalent you will get to the little black dress of the swim world. It works with your body rather than against it and is genuinely flattering across a wide range of proportions," she adds.

The Holipick Tummy Control One Piece Swimsuit has subtle ruching over the chest and stomach, making it ideal for those who prefer more subtle pieces. It comes in a range of sizes and colors too, including Rose Pink which will tap into the bubblegum pink color trend that's so hot in 2026. Kennedy also recommends the Revele One Piece from Miraclesuit, which has a flattering crisscross over the chest and comes in Mulberry, aka navy blue — another of the year's major color trends.

Sleek tankinis are back in a new way

If you prefer a two-piece but still want a little more coverage and support, a tankini may be the way to go for summer 2026. Cynthia Kennedy tells us exclusively the modest style suit is back for June, July, and August, but not in the Y2K-esque way you might remember. "The modern version has sleeker tailoring, adjustable coverage, modern necklines, color-blocking, and much better fabrics," she says, exclusively. "They give you the flexibility and comfort you want while still looking current and stylish," she adds.

Cupshe's Square Neck Ruching Side Drawstring Tankini Set in Open Blue, which Kennedy recommends, offers a single-color top but puts a modern twist on the classic look via its patterned bottoms. Kennedy also suggests trying the B2prity Halter Tankini Swimsuit, which offers tummy control for those who prefer a little more structure in their swimwear. The number comes in a range of colors and patterns, including olive green (which Kennedy recommends as one of summer 2026's trendiest swimwear colors).

Minimalist one-pieces are bringing back the '90s silhouette

'90s-inspired looks remain one of the fashion trends we can't avoid in 2026, and that's no different in swimwear. Cynthia Kennedy exclusively tells us that minimalist one-pieces with structure are bringing back the '90s silhouette this summer. She suggests wearing high and square necks, as well as reaching for pieces with contrasting trims and hardware. "I especially love these for women over 50 because they feel timeless, sophisticated, and expensive-looking without trying too hard," she explains, noting these trendy swimsuits will be particularly hot in earthy tones (think the likes of mocha, lagoon blue, or olive green). Another way to get on trend is to opt for a piece in the continued hottest color of the moment, butter yellow, which has been an on-trend color since spring/summer 2025.

Kennedy suggests trying the Miraclesuit Theia One Piece in Palma for that earthy olive tone or Cupshe's Square Neck Bathing Suit, which comes in earthy tones like Chestnut Brown and Sage Green. Then there's Amazon Essentials' One-Piece, which comes in the butter yellow-esque Light Yellow and hits that '90s look thanks to its higher neckline and simple design.

High-waisted bikinis are back and flattering for a range of body types

If bikinis are more your thing, reach for a high-waisted two-piece this summer. The trend has gone in and out of fashion over the decades (it initially rose to prominence in the '40s and '50s), but now it's back after super skimpy bikinis were declared an outdated bathing suit style for summer 2025. Because the design has a retro feel, it's a fun throwback for those who may remember the trend the first time around. The style is flattering on a wide range of body types and can be incredibly confidence boosting, as high-waisted bottoms have more material than skimpier thong or low-rise bottoms so offer more coverage.

The Amy Babe High Waisted Push Up Twist Front Bikini features ruching and comes in olive green, so will help you hit multiple trends. The Blooming Jelly High Waisted Bikini Set comes in a range of shades and offers a fun and flirty skirt bottom. That makes it ideal for those who want to have more fun with their swimwear but still want coverage.

Versatile swimwear is becoming part of our summer outfits

One of the hottest swimwear trends for summer 2026 is wearing pieces that can easily transition from the swimming pool to the lunch table to a scenic walk around town. "Women [are] treating swimwear more like part of an outfit instead of a standalone piece," Cynthia Kennedy exclusively tells Women.com, noting how bikini tops can be streetwear staples. "I've been styling them with an oversized linen shirt, a sarong, sheer pants, shell jewelry, raffia bags, and a chic pair of sunglasses. In fact, many of the new designs are made to double as a bodysuit, which I like since it makes the piece far more versatile," she adds.

This trend is about more than just looks, though. A swimsuit, bikini top, or tankini top that can pull double duty as clothing is perfect for a summer vacation, as it'll help you save on suitcase space and excess luggage fees. It's also a great way to prevent breaking the bank on a new wardrobe amid rising clothing costs.

The RXRXCOCO Women Tummy Control One Piece Swimsuit or the Malibu Girl Tummy Control One-Piece Swimsuit from Cupshe can easily be worn as stylish bodysuits under flowy pants or shorts. We'd suggest sticking to more neutral colors, such as black or white, and avoid busy patterns if you're planning to make your swimwear part of your wardrobe. That way, you'll find your swimwear much easier to style.
