There's great hair news for older women rolling in, because a number of the season's hottest cuts, colors, and styles are super flattering for those in their 40s and beyond. That's mainly down to a shift toward aesthetics that don't just look low-maintenance but fully embrace a more casual attitude to hair styling. "Where 2025 embraced the illusion of effortlessness through styled texture, 2026 prioritizes hair health, longevity, and realistic upkeep," Lindsay Worthen, Ogle School's veteran cosmetologist and campus director, tells Women exclusively.

"Trends are increasingly centered on maintaining the integrity of the hair, reducing manipulation, heat, and tension, while intentionally embracing natural texture. The result is hair that feels healthy, lived-in, and undone by design rather than styled to appear so," she adds. From heat-free air-dried styles to dyes designed to complement — not mask — your natural hair color, these are the five summer hair trends you need on your radar, no matter your length and texture.

Air-dried styles take the effort out of getting ready in the heat

Just in time for the heat of summer, it's time to swap heavy hairdryers, damaging curling wands, and fussy flat irons for haircuts that lend themselves well to air-drying. "Air-dried cuts, like the soft bob, are a big trend this summer. This type of cut is shaped with subtle layers and designed to be worn air-dried and look great without too much heat styling," Lindsay Worthen exclusively shares. "It works with your natural texture rather than against it, making it the perfect low-maintenance style for the season," she notes.

Wearing air-dried styles means letting go of bulky hair styling tools and twisting your arms around your head in front of the mirror (a particular perk in the sticky summer heat as we get older and tire faster). Ditching heat tools is also a plus, considering many of us wash our hair more in the summer to beat sweaty scalps. Excessive styling can leave hair dry and damaged (our hair becomes more susceptible to breakage as we age, too), but cutting back on heat will leave your hair looking healthier.

Adopting the air-dried aesthetic doesn't necessarily mean you can't style your hair and be on-trend, though. No matter if it's long, short, or in between, if you have naturally straight locks but like texture, try our heatless curl hacks to give your tresses a little more oomph.

Modern shags with natural texture will also make styling easier this summer

Lindsay Worthen also recommends giving the trendy modern shag a go this summer. "The modern shag is trending for incorporating face-framing layers more softly, while still working within the natural texture," Worthen exclusively tells Women. This cut may look familiar, as it's a haircut trend that's continuing its popularity after being hot for winter 2024/2025

The textured modern shag is ideal for older women because it's a great wash-and-go style that can be left to air-dry. That means you'll be tapping into two trends this summer and can even let it dry outdoors while enjoying the sun. Equally, shags are one of the best haircuts for making hair look thicker. Our locks can naturally thin as we age, but this trendy style will help bring back the look of density and volume with minimal effort.

Natural color-complementing dyes are ideal for those embracing their grays

Summer 2026 will see a shift away from heavy dye jobs that mask our hair's natural color. "We're seeing a big shift toward long-wear gloss techniques using semi and demi-permanent color, emphasizing seamless blending and no hard lines of demarcation, just soft and natural-looking results," Lindsay Worthen tells us, exclusively. This trend is ideal for older women as it incorporates gray blending techniques (hair dying that aims to incorporate natural grays rather than concealing them). So there's never been a better time to take some celeb inspo and embrace natural gray hair.

But the natural color-complementing dye trend isn't only for those with gray locks. It can work for those with naturally blond, brunette, and red tresses who want to emphasize their color. That may include embracing another of 2026's hair color trends by adding some depth to brown locks via a cooler, smoky hue that blends with your natural tone.

Healthy scalps will be so on trend

According to Lindsay Worthen, summer 2026 will be all about getting our scalps in tiptop condition. "We're seeing a huge emphasis on scalp and hair health because the foundation of any great style starts with a healthy base," she explains. That means ditching products, like harsh dyes, that have the potential to irritate the scalp and cause dryness or flakiness. "When the scalp is balanced and the hair is nourished, you get that glossy, luxurious finish," Worthen says.

This trend is particularly great for older women, as hair can lose its thickness over time, making the scalp more visible. With more scalp naturally on show, it'll be more obvious in older women if hair isn't at its healthiest. What products to invest in will depend on your scalp and hair's specific needs, so it's worth getting personalized recommendations from your hairstylist. Several products encourage glossy hair and a healthy scalp, including L'Oreal Paris' Glossing Lamination Hair MaskGarnier Fructis Diamond Sleek Hair Shine Spray, and Living Proof's Scalp Care Dry Scalp Treatment.

If getting your scalp healthy isn't possible in time for the hotter months, another major 2026 hair trend can help: headscarves. This accessory with a modern twist has made a major comeback this year and can be used to disguise flaky or dry scalps. It can also help protect and cover your locks on days you want to step out wearing a hair mask/treatment that can make the roots appear greasy.

Soft ombré is a trendy style that's easy for older women to pull off

Traditionally, ombré hair looks have included a dramatic shift between dark roots and hair dyed several shades lighter at the ends. This trend is back for summer 2026, but in a softer, more undone way. Instead of a heavy contrast, the modern way to rock the balayage-inspired style is with a more gradual fade that's no more than three shades lighter or darker. That makes it perfect for older women, because it's less harsh than the ombré style that was huge in 2014 (overly contrasting looks can often be aging due to their severity).

This more undone twist on the two-tone hair look is super low maintenance, as it doesn't require regular touch-ups — the more lived-in the better! It's a solid choice for those on fixed incomes who don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on their hair and want to enjoy the summer sunshine away from the salon. Plus, it gives off beachy vibes that are synonymous with the season.
