Chelsea Clinton's Wedding Was A Wildly Lavish Event
When it comes to planning a wedding, there are many things to take into consideration. From romantic bridal updos and wedding hairstyles to curating a unique wedding party aesthetic, it's an understatement to say that things could get quite stressful. But all of that proved no issue for Chelsea Clinton's special day back in 2010, when she tied the knot with investment banker Marc Mezvinsky. As the only child of former U.S. President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, it's safe to say that no expense was spared for their daughter's wedding. In fact, the total cost of the wedding amounted to a jaw-dropping $3 million.
The wedding was held at the lavish Astor Courts Estate, with the wedding cake costing $11,000 and the flowers a whopping $500,000. And let's not get started on the outfits, as the former first daughter was decked out in a $25,000 Vera Wang wedding gown. Hillary was not to be outdone, splurging on a flowery reddish-pink Oscar de la Renta dress with a hefty price tag of $15,000. But that's not all, for according to The Guardian, the wedding even had $600,000 air-conditioned tents, as well as locking down the nearby historic Beekman Arms Inn for guests to stay in. But who exactly footed the bill for Chelsea Clinton's wedding extravaganza?
Chelsea Clinton's wedding bill caused trouble for her parents
If we're talking about who paid that $3 million bill, it could have been the Clintons themselves. After all, Hillary Clinton alone reportedly has a net worth of $120 million as of 2023. However, it seems that it's neither the Clintons nor Chelsea's husband, Marc Mezvinsky, who paid for the wedding. Instead, it's alleged that the Clinton Foundation footed the outrageous bill, with funds meant to provide aid relief to Haiti. Bill Clinton was quick to fire back at the accusation in a post on X (formerly Twitter). "No Clinton Foundation funds — dedicated to Haiti or otherwise — were used to pay for Chelsea's wedding," Clinton wrote, then added, "It's not only untrue, it's a personal insult to me, to Hillary, and to Chelsea and Marc."
But a string of scandalous emails published by WikiLeaks told otherwise. These emails were dated from 2012 and were between Doug Band, Bill Clinton's former Deputy Assistant, and John Podesta, who later chaired Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign. They apparently confirmed that Foundation money was funneled to not only pay for Chelsea's wedding, but other expenses as well. "The investigation into her getting paid for campaigning, using foundation resources for her wedding and life for a decade, taxes on money from her parents ..." Band wrote in the email. Despite the Foundation uploading a page firmly maintaining that no funds were touched for the aforementioned purpose, the allegations certainly cast a dark shadow over Chelsea Clinton's wedding.
