Rebecca Gayheart's Head-Turning Transformation

Rebecca Gayheart's decadeslong transformation is nothing short of head-turning. This star grew up in a town with a population of 800 and first got our attention in the 1990s as the stunning, curly-haired face of Noxema skincare (which allowed her to rub shoulders with fellow Noxema model Jared Leto). The gig earned her the moniker "The Noxema Girl" — but she doesn't care that the name stuck for decades. "I have done a lot of other work since then, but I can't knock it because it gave me my start. I'm okay with being 'The Noxema Girl,'" she admitted on "The Early Show" (via CBS News).

And she wasn't wrong about achieving a lot since her commercial days. Gayheart has appeared in major movies like "Scream 2" and "Urban Legend," and she's popped up in all corners of the small screen, from the soap opera "Loving" to the medical drama "Nip/Tuck." But her rise to the top has been far from smooth sailing, as she's repeatedly hit the headlines for heartbreaking reasons. Gayheart has stayed strong amid tragic family deaths and illnesses, plus the divorce that never was, all while raising two beautiful daughters and raising millions for those in need.

1971: Rebecca Gayheart was born a Kentucky girl with big dreams

Rebecca Gayheart was raised in a small Southern town after she was born in 1971. "I'm from Pinetop, Kentucky, which is if you fly into Lexington and drive three hours, it's in the Appalachian Mountains," she shared on "Late Night with Conan O'Brien." Gayheart didn't grow up privileged, but still looked back at her childhood fondly. "Even though I grew up dirt poor, I had a loving family," she'd later share on the "Only One in the Room" podcast. [15:43]

But while Gayheart would carve out a career niche as a sweet yet sexy starlet, when she was young, she wasn't afraid to get physical. "When I was in kindergarten, I fought with the boys a lot. I would fill my purse full of rocks and hit them over the head with it," she said on "Late Night with Conan O'Brien." She also recalled being bullied by a classmate. "She had been picking on me for months, torturing me. And I was really afraid of her. And one day at recess, she pushed me in the mud puddle ... and started pouncing on me. And I remember being on my back and kicking her ... I won the fight. And they were calling me Rocky after," she said.

Aside from her rocky (literally) days, the star still had a pretty traditional upbringing and was a cheerleader in high school. But Gayheart's time in Kentucky didn't extend into adulthood. She moved to New York at 15 and began attending a drama school. "I was determined to do it differently than others in my town," she said on the "Only One in the Room" podcast [9:30], revealing she made the Big Apple her home for a decade after that.

1991: She found early success in commercials before landing a prestigious soap opera role

In the early 1990s, Rebecca Gayheart was best known for her commercials. In addition to her multiple print and TV ads for Noxema skincare, which she started in 1991, she also appeared in commercials for big brands like Clairol and Burger King. At the time, the fresh-faced star had gorgeous, big, tight, light-brown curls, which made her instantly recognizable.

In 1992, though, she found herself on TV in a more notable role. She was cast as Hannah Mayberry in the soap opera "Loving" and appeared in 178 episodes of the ABC show between 1992 and 1993. That was followed by roles in the "Vanishing Son" movies before she popped up in "Earth 2" for multiple episodes in 1994 and 1995. Also in 1995, Gayheart landed one of her most notable guest roles playing Antonia 'Toni' Marchette in "Beverly Hills, 90210." She was also pursuing a modeling career at the time and walked the runway during the Nicole Miller Spring 1996 Ready-to-Wear runway show.

Gayheart truly fit the bill as a teen star, as she embraced super on-trend (for the time) fashion and took major risks. Among her hot 1990s looks was the trendy purple slip dress (which made a comeback in 2023) with sheer red material over her chest, which she rocked at the "Nothing to Lose" premiere. Then there was the daring ho- pink coord outfit (complete with a strapless crop top and matching skirt with a sheer sarong over the top) at the 1999 MTV Movie Awards.

1997: Rebecca Gayheart became a movie star and got engaged for the first time

Rebecca Gayheart's breakthrough into movies came in 1997 when she appeared in the Martin Lawrence- and Tim Robbins-led "Nothing to Lose." That led to a role in the horror flick "Scream 2" alongside David Arquette, Neve Campbell, and Courteney Cox. The star also took on one of her most notable roles in 1998 when she appeared in the slasher "Urban Legend," which also starred her old friend Jared Leto and Tara Reid. Gayheart received high praise for her role, with "Happy Horror Time" podcast host Matt Emert gushing during an interview with director Jamie Blanks, "Her performance as Brenda is incredible." Blanks agreed, "It's amazing."

We saw more of a movie star side to the actor at the "Urban Legend" premiere when she swapped her signature long ringlets for a shorter, sleeker 'do with looser curls. Her hair still had plenty of volume, though, and gave us Old Hollywood vibes, which may have signified that Gayheart was adapting to her new celebrity life in Los Angeles.

The actor's personal life was super busy in the latter half of the 1990s, too. She'd been dating director Brett Ratner since around 1987, and the twosome got engaged in 1998. But their betrothal wouldn't last long. New York Daily News claimed they'd gone their separate ways in 1999, speculating Ratner's being spotted with another woman may have caused their split. Gayheart didn't confirm the rumors, but admitted on the "Only One in the Room" podcast [11:22], "We had a wedding planned and then we called it off." But Gayheart didn't rest on her laurels amid the split. She'd been promoting her teen movie "Jawbreaker" and was announced for the ABC series "Wasteland," which ran for a single season.

2001: She was involved in a fatal car accident that changed her life forever

In 2001, Rebecca Gayheart was involved in a horrific car accident. "A 9-year-old child died. And, you know, everything changed from that, and I still have trouble talking about it," she said on the "Only One in the Room" podcast in 2019. [14:30] The incident caused the death of a boy who was jaywalking as Gayheart swerved around cars that had let him cross before hitting him. She was charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter and had her license suspended. She was sentenced to three years of probation, ordered to pay a fine, and asked to produce a driving safety video. In 2002, she settled a wrongful death suit with the boy's family out of court. But the scars of the incident were far more long-lasting.

"I did not cope very well after ... I just didn't want to live after that accident. That's what it came down to. I couldn't handle it at all," she said on the podcast [15:18]. "So I spent about a year just trying to kill myself, basically, by doing every self-destructive thing a person can do. I just didn't understand," she added, sharing the incident made her question her whole life, including her faith.

2002: The actor found solace in charity work

Following an incredibly difficult time in Rebecca Gayheart's life, she turned to charity work. In 2002, she co-founded the Chrysalis Butterfly Ball in association with the Chrysalis Foundation, which aims to help educate and house unhoused people across Los Angeles. "[I] was really searching for a charity where I could get involved in a hands-on way," Gayheart told Extra. Over the years, the annual event has been attended by countless A-list stars, including Zendaya, Jamie Foxx, and LL Cool J. At the time of writing, the Chrysalis Butterfly Ball has raised more than $21 million.

Speaking on the "Only One in the Room" podcast [16:19] in 2019, Gayheart explained that serving others helped her cope following her 2001 accident. She shared she still questioned why the incident happened but noted, "Today I am able to ponder those questions and still realize that I deserve to be happy and that I am meant to be on this planet and that I have a purpose and I'm making living amends for that even though it was an accident."

The star had also fully embraced her movie-star status via her wardrobe. At the 2002 Vanity Fair Oscar Party, where she walked the red carpet arm in arm with her ex Brett Ratner, she looked every inch the celebrity. Gayheart wore a plunging bright red dress that highlighted her waist and ensured all eyes were on her. She paired it with uniform curls parted in the middle, a statement-making silver necklace, and heavy eyeliner. We also saw a more sophisticated yet still trendy side to her style. At the premiere for "The Hire," she wowed in a strapless gray top with a pinstripe pencil skirt, that was peak Y2K fashion.

2003: She had a lot going on amid her relationship with Eric Dane, Broadway gig, and blossoming TV career

The 2000s were very busy for Rebecca Gayheart. 2003 marked the start of her whirlwind romance with fellow actor Eric Dane. The two started dating and walked down the aisle in under a year. When asked about the early days of their romance in an interview with Flaunt, Dane admitted (via New York Post), "It's probably one of the least interesting stories in the world. It went basically like this: 'You wanna go out?' 'Yeah, sure.' 10 months later, we were married." The two tied the knot in 2004.

As her relationship blossomed, so did her acting career. From 2003 to 2006, Gayheart cemented her status as a major TV star via appearances in the likes of "What I Like About You," "Dead Like Me," and "Nip/Tuck." She also got her foot in the door in the world of TV movies, as she appeared in 2005's "The Christmas Blessing" alongside Neil Patrick Harris. On "The Early Show," she revealed she was looking forward to her family being able to watch one of her projects. "A lot of the time, the things I do aren't up their alley but this is perfect. It's a sweet Christmas movie, and they'll love it," she said (via CBS News). In 2007, she also popped up in single episodes of some of the era's other biggest TV shows, including "CSI: Miami" and "Ugly Betty."

But she wasn't just focused on the small screen. In 2004, Gayheart headed to Broadway for the stage adaptation of the Julia Roberts and Dolly Parton movie "Steel Magnolias." In 2008, she trod the boards again in the play "Boeing Boeing," which marked her last acting gig for a while.

2010: Life changed forever when she became a mom twice over

Rebecca Gayheart undertook an exciting new chapter in her transformation when she and Eric Dane announced they were expecting their first child together in November 2009. "We've always wanted to be parents ... We're absolutely looking forward to it," she told In Touch (via E! News). Gayheart gave birth to a daughter, Billie Dane, in March 2010. The happy couple didn't wait long before doubling their joy. They announced they were expecting their second child in July 2011. "I've heard that's very challenging. But I think I'm up for it. Eventually it's going to be great because they're going to be very close in age and very close, hopefully," she told People about being a mom of two. Their second daughter, Georgia Dane, was born that December.

Gayheart embraced comfortable, flowing pieces during her pregnancy and served some iconic maternity fashion. In 2010, she stunned in a simple but flattering strapless black dress for the "Valentine's Day" movie premiere and cradled her growing bump. Black appeared to be her go-to, as she also wore a loose black top and jeans while expecting Billie.

Gayheart had stepped back from acting to focus on motherhood but admitted she was ready to get back to set. "I am anxious to go back to work because it's been a while for me now," she told People during her second pregnancy. "I've been working my whole life, and I miss it ... I need a job!" she added, referring to the career implications of pregnancy and motherhood. Though she'd shared her desire to work again following the birth of her children, her post-motherhood roles were few and far between. In 2013, she appeared in the movie "G.B.F.," followed by "Grey Lady" with Dane in 2017.

2017: Life took a dark turn as Rebecca Gayheart dealt with her sister's death and divorce

Things were tough for Rebecca Gayheart in 2017. She announced the death of her sister, Rachel Gayheart, who was in prison on drug charges when she passed away. The actor confirmed the sad news on Instagram alongside a family photo and wrote in part, "[I'm] so grateful that I was able to be with my family during this time and want to say thank you to everyone for all of the love and support you've sent to me and my family."

But life didn't let up. The following year, Gayheart (who had cut her signature long locks into a chic lob) filed for divorce from Eric Dane. She opened up about their split in a candid piece for The Cut in 2025, sharing, "We had a really lovely marriage for a long time ... we created two beautiful girls. But also, lots of s**t went crazy in our relationship, and it wasn't good." Dane got candid about their split on "Famous Last Words" in 2026, explaining (via SheKnows), "We still love each other deeply, I just don't think we want to live with each other. There's a lot of love there."

Amid the difficulties in her personal life, Gayheart's career stalled. She appeared in an episode of "Chic Mama Drama" as herself in 2018, but, at the time of writing, she hasn't acted in a major project since 2019's "Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood." "This Quentin [Tarantino] movie is me dipping my toes, seeing if I want to go back into [acting]," she said on the "Only One in the Room" podcast [8:23], but her lack of roles since suggests it wasn't the right time to return to work.

2025: She took back her divorce filing following Eric Dane's ALS diagnosis

There was a complicated truth about Rebecca Gayheart and Eric Dane's marriage, and in March 2025 she requested their divorce be dismissed. "We separated, but we never got a divorce; we were about to and then we didn't. We haven't lived in the same home for eight years; he's dated other people, I've dated someone. It's a very complicated relationship," she wrote for The Cut in 2025, but she proved it's sometimes possible to be friends with an ex. The month after she rescinded her filing, Dane shared his amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) diagnosis with the world (the disease affects brain and spinal cord nerve cells, causing a loss of muscle control).

"I am definitely trying to show [our kids] that we show up for people no matter what. He is our family," Gayheart, who had returned to her signature long locks, explained on "Broad Ideas with Rachel Bilson and Olivia Allen" about why she and Dane never divorced. The actor also got candid about standing by Dane with The Cut. She detailed the heartbreak of telling their children about his diagnosis and shared how she helped ensure he had round-the-clock care. "There are times that [caregiving] shifts aren't covered, so I cover them," she wrote. "Eric's diagnosis has changed my approach to everything ... I'll just look at [people] and go, I wonder what they're going through. Because I know everyone is going through something," she added.

Gayheart appeared to fall in love again as she got back into dating amid her almost divorce. In 2023, she was spotted on a date with Hard Rock founder Peter Morton. In December 2025 they proved they were still going strong when they were snapped kissing.

2026: Rebecca Gayheart experienced tragedy again when Eric Dane died

Eric Dane died in February 2026. "He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world," a statement confirmed (via People). A GoFundMe was set up following the "Grey's Anatomy" star's passing to raise funds for his daughters, which Rebecca Gayheart appeared to reference on her Instagram Stories. "I am so blown away by the outpouring of love and support from our community. There aren't words to express our gratitude," she wrote (via Independent). At the time of writing, the fundraiser has raised more than $460,000 toward its $500,000 goal. The star also shared captionless throwback photos of Dane with their children via her Instagram Stories in the days following her husband's sad death.

And it seems like Gayheart's attention will be firmly on her daughters as they navigate their new normal. In 2025, the actor and her two children teamed up for an ad campaign with the fashion brand Love Shack Fancy, with the star telling the company, "Motherhood is the most meaningful role I've ever had. My daughters inspire me every day."
