9 Times Jennifer Lawrence Showed Some Serious Leg On The Red Carpet
Jennifer Lawrence has been hitting the red carpet in gowns that show some serious leg, and now, she's finally getting cred for the fashion choices she's made both on and off the red carpet. Granted, her fans have always seen her as a standout figure in Hollywood, for both her talent and advocacy, but now the media is finally realizing that Lawrence also has a lot to offer in a sartorial sense, too.
"I've never looked at J. Law and thought, 'You're a fashion girl,'" Marie Claire editor-in-chief Nikki Ogunnaike told CNN in December 2025. "Nothing about her red carpet (clothing) has ever made me say, 'Yes, this woman cares about fashion. She cares about what she's wearing' ... [but] "somehow her streetstyle has turned her into an icon." In fact, in 2023, thanks very much in part to Lawrence, mesh flats needed to be on everyone's summer radar as the "it" shoe of the season.
While Lawrence certainly has outfits that have missed the mark, like everyone else in the world, she's come into her own, and we love to see it. As Lawrence continues to make the rounds promoting her newest film, "Die My Love," for which she's received her seventh Golden Globe nomination, she's doing so with some serious leg action. But if you think this is something new, it's not. Although she may not have had the style reputation she has now, a walk down memory lane proves she's never been afraid to show some leg.
2011: Looking magnificent in magenta
Magenta isn't an easy color to pull off, but when Jennifer Lawrence attended the 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards in 2011 in a strappy magenta number by Oscar de la Renta with a thigh-high slit, she nailed it. The black bow at the waist and black heels were just enough to break up all the magenta, keeping her look glamorous and the design of the dress on-trend. It was Lawrence's first SAG nomination, having been nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role in a Motion Picture in "Winter's Bone." Although she didn't take home a SAG award that night, she would two years later for "Silver Linings Playbook."
2013: Going sheer before sheer was cool
Long before sheer dresses were on-trend and everywhere, Jennifer Lawrence wore a black bodysuit with a sheer, full-length blue-gray overlay by Dior Couture for the Los Angeles Premiere of "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" in 2013. Not only was it considered daring at the time, but Lawrence and all her charm make everything about this ensemble more playful and fun, as opposed to overtly risqué. The reason for this might have to do with her blond pixie cut that's very likely to inspire your next short 'do, because wow, clearly Lawrence was made to rock a pixie.
2014: Stepping away from Dior to serve in a Mugler gown
In 2014, Jennifer Lawrence really outdid herself with her red carpet choices. While she wore a lot of Dior that year, when attending the November 2014 after-party of the London premiere of "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay," Lawrence wore this white custom-made Mugler dress that had both a beautiful plunging halter-top neckline, as well as a thigh-high slit. Lawrence completed the ensemble with silver heels that matched the silver detailing in the bust of the dress. Although she kept her makeup on the minimal side — save for some dark eyeliner — what stood out most was how she matched her manicure to her dress. In 2023, this would be called the coconut milk nail trend, but in 2014, it was simply Lawrence pulling her entire look together.
2016: Baring just enough
One of the best parts about the Academy Awards is the Vanity Fair Oscar Party. Not only are the celebrities who aren't invited to the Oscars still invited to the party, but those who do attend the ceremony and hit up the party afterward get to rock two outfits that night. While Jennifer Lawrence attended the 2016 Academy Awards in a full-length, tiered black gown by Dior Couture, for the VF party, she wore a sexy yet fun black two-piece ensemble by Alexander Wang. Although fairly simple in its design, Lawrence elevated the look with a silver choker, silver strappy sandals, and a small black and silver handbag.
2018: Embracing her Red Sparrow character
In 2018's "Red Sparrow," Jennifer Lawrence played Dominika Egorova, an undercover operative who uses sensuality to seduce her targets. While she didn't take method dressing to the next level the way Zendaya has, Lawrence did choose to wear some looks that were exceptionally fitting for her character. For example, at the "Red Sparrow" photocall in London, Lawrence wore a low-cut black dress with a thigh-high slit by Versace. But because she wore the dress in February and wasn't bundled up like her male costars, Lawrence found herself on the receiving end of sexist comments. "That Versace dress was fabulous, you think I'm going to cover that gorgeous dress up with a coat and a scarf?" Lawrence wrote on Facebook, via The Guardian. "I would have stood in the snow for that dress because I love fashion and that was my choice." Hear, hear, J.Law!
2022: Pulling off the sheer trend after the birth of her first son
In September 2022, Jennifer Lawrence attended the premiere of her film "Causeway" at the Toronto Film Festival in this full-length sheer black dress by Dior. The off-the-shoulder dress wasn't just a cheeky look for the premiere, straying from more restricting and uptight gowns, but Lawrence also gave us a masterclass in how to ace the sheer clothing trend. With her makeup on the minimal side and her long hair perfectly tousled, this was Lawrence's first big return to the red carpet after the birth of her son in February of that year. Like any new mom, she was absolutely glowing.
2025: Owning the red carpet at Cipriani in Dior
In December 2025, Jennifer Lawrence attended the 35th Gotham Film Awards at Cipriani Wall Street in a striking look by Dior. Jonathan Anderson, who left Loewe in early 2025 to become creative director for Dior, dressed Lawrence in a black fitted Bar Jacket and matching asymmetrical skirt. The train was just long enough to create a bit of drama, without taking away from the whole look. To make sure all eyes were on Anderson's gorgeous creation, Lawrence kept both her makeup and jewelry to a minimum. If you're going to attend an event where you plan to show some leg, you want Anderson on your team to make sure everything is executed flawlessly.
2025: Becoming a Greek goddess for the Governors Awards
Just a month before the Gotham Film Awards, Jennifer Lawrence was in Hollywood attending the 16th Governors Awards. As a Dior ambassador, Lawrence again wore a custom dress by the fashion house, and one that's in stark contrast to the look she wore in December 2025. The ivory off-the-shoulder gown made Lawrence look like a Grecian goddess, while the design focused on a whole boatload of leg. As much elegance as the dress embodied, with a slit that high, it's hard for it not to be the focal point. Which might have been the point. Either way, J. Law looked great.
2025: In her fashion icon era
How anyone can look at a photo of Jennifer Lawrence from the New York premiere of her film, "Die My Love," and not see a fashion icon, just might be one of the world's greatest mysteries. For the big event in November 2025, Lawrence wore a fabulous take on the little black dress by Dior. She completed the look with a black choker, black heels, and a bold lipstick choice, proving she's one of the celebs to have mastered the red lip. Her entire ensemble, from top to bottom, was exactly how you show up to your own movie premiere.
