Good news, temperatures are dropping, and fall is here! 2025's New York Fashion Week ran from September 11th through the 16th, and while we were excited to see what the runway had in store for spring 2026, street style was seriously serving looks. The best part? So many of the streetwear trends can start being worn right now. From wide-leg balloon pants to plaid dresses and sequin pencil skirts, style icons have shown us that fall 2025 is all about mixing textures, prints, and colors.

With oversized sweaters paired with pencil skirts, lace dresses with cardigans or a fun tee, or wide-leg pants styled with cropped bomber jackets, layering was a key theme on the streets of NYFW in 2025. Pops of bold color added energy, while sequins and playful patterns brought fun, eye-catching elements to more casual looks. So, ditch the outdated trends for fall 2025 and embrace some fresher, more versatile pieces that'll have everyone doing a double-take. From statement reds to print-on-print outfits, it's time to mix and match and experiment with your style for a playfully polished look.

Wide-leg pants are still in

According to the streets of New York Fashion Week, wide-leg pants are very much still in. However, 2025's take leans into airy and billowing silhouettes that balance comfort and sophistication. Chloe's silk balloon pants just might be the perfect example — just enough volume and also fluid and light, so they're not overwhelming. But the price tag is quite hefty, so if you want to try a wide-leg pant style, specifically balloon pants, for the fall on a budget, you could opt for Mango's version, or the IXIMO Relax Fit Lantern Trouser. They may not be silk, but the cut still captures that same sculptural volume.

Checkered, babe, checkered

The streets of New York Fashion Week were filled with stylish fashionistas in a lot of plaid. From oversized plaid shirts to tailored pencil skirts and even scarves, the classic checkered pattern made its presence known in every form. Cher Horowitz would be proud! If you're not a fan of plaid shirts or just want to try something new, a neutral-colored midi skirt in a checkered pattern might be the perfect addition to your wardrobe. COS's draped checked midi skirt would go perfectly with a vibrant sweater and leather or suede loafers, as would Tanming's Wool Plaid A-Line Skirt. Talk about a chic fall.

Pairing prints with prints

Prints, prints, prints! The streets of NYFW 2025 proved you can mix and match prints and patterns in a chic and stylish way. Think floral-patterned skirts with faintly patterned blouses, or layering striped tops with scattered print denim shorts. The fabulous individual in the photo went above and beyond and added a black polka-dotted tie to her outfit for something extra bold and fashion-forward. Just keep in mind, the print-on-print trend is all about balance! You don't have to go overboard to make a statement.

Pencil skirts

Whatever the style is, skirts know how to show up. Whether it's a classic mini skirt, a flowing maxi, or this season's trending pencil skirt, they always find their way back to our wardrobes. At New York Fashion Week, there were too many pencil skirts to keep count! Whether they had fringe detailing or lace accents, or came in denim or leather fabric, pencil skirts definitely made a statement on the streets. The structured silhouette of these skirts makes them perfect for styling with an oversized cozy sweater or even with a graphic tee layered under a bomber jacket. Just a few elements will easily create a look that's chic and effortless.

Sequin everything

While many think sparkles are only appropriate for evening glam, fashion-forward individuals beg to differ. Sparkles came about for NYFW 2025 as sequined bottoms, tops, and dresses made streetwear fun and shimmery. Daytime looks were even more refined with a touch of playful sparkle. People were spotted pairing sequin skirts with knit tops and even crisp button-up shirts, which felt like the perfect contrast. If you're just dipping your toes in, the subtle sequin mini skirt from Zara may be the perfect wearable introduction, or try CIDER's Sequin Lined Mid Waist Skirt. It has the right amount of shimmer, so you won't feel over-the-top while still being able to make a stylish statement for fall.

Add something red to your outfit as a statement piece

Red was one of the standout accent colors on the streets of NYFW 2025. While major fashion outlets claimed red sweaters to be the perfect statement piece for fall, trendsetters didn't stop there when it came to showing their love for the bold color. From socks to scarves, there was a touch of the vibrant crimson in countless outfits. So, it's time to start incorporating red into your fall wardrobe. Pair a casual jeans and t-shirt look with ballet flats like FEVERSOLE's Macaroon Colorful Memory Foam Patent Ballet Flat in red.

Lace, lace, lace

Lace was so huge at Fashion Week this year that it earned dedicated coverage on Fashionista. While some may regard lace as nothing more than lingerie as outerwear, trendsetters beg to differ. Whether it's a full-on sheer lace dress layered under a fun T-shirt or lace details on dresses or blouses, lace adds a romantic texture and visual interest to casual street style. While a sheer lace dress may be a bit too bold for everyday casual wear, you could try incorporating this romantic trend subtly with items like the Varnell Satin Lace Top from The Frankie Shop or a delicate lace skirt to add a touch of elegance to your fall outfit.

Argyle sweaters, short- or long-sleeved

Argyle sweaters aren't just limited to private school uniforms and preppy stereotypes; they're both the perfect addition to a fall 2025 wardrobe and also a capsule wardrobe. Street stylers paired argyle-patterned sweaters with slitted leather skirts, relaxed-fit trousers, or even layered them with casual dresses. While a higher-end, classic-fit argyle sweater may run you more than a few hundred dollars, there are many affordable options from brands like Zara, Gap, and H&M. Just opt for sweaters made of fine-knit cotton or cotton-blend options to look polished without breaking the bank.
