Remember in the '00s and '10s when ombre skirts were everywhere? Well, the once outdated, whimsical style is officially trending again in 2025 — with a slight twist. "Ombre slip skirts are definitely seeing a revival for 2025! Y2K fashion continues to dominate, and the ombre slip skirt hits that sweet spot," Jordan Stolch, personal stylist at MiKADO Personal Styling, exclusively tells Women.com.

"It most certainly evokes nostalgia (yes, regarding your nod to the Carrie Bradshaw moments, and even more so now as we revisit her style in 'And Just Like That')," Stolch says. "But in 2025 it's being updated with fresh silhouette, modern styling, and more elevated color palettes," Stolch continues, revealing we'll be seeing the ombre look return in corals, apricots, and modern metallics (which became summer fashion's biggest sleeper hit in 2023).

We've already seen some of our favorite stars hopping on this unexpected resurgence, too. Jennifer Lawrence looked beyond stunning and chic in a nude ensemble at the Cannes Film Festival in May. She paired a loose top with sheer sleeves over a matching, delicate satin skirt that had a subtle nude to green gradient mesh layer. Mliyasan's Midi Elastic High Waist Pleated Skirt in Gradient Purple or Generic's Women's Fairy Tulle Skirt Starry Sky Gradient Color Skirt in Blue will give you a similar look with a dark twist.

How to avoid making ombre skirts look outdated in 2025

As with any returning trend back with a vengeance, there are a few styling tips to remember to keep it modern and fresh. For the ombre slip skirt, Jordan Stolch recommends, "Avoid pairing it with anything too overtly Y2K, unless you're intentionally trying to pay homage to that era." That means you'll want to steer clear of the butterfly top that came back in 2023 (even if you make it modern). Instead, Stolch exclusively tells us, "Balance the softness of the skirt with something a bit edgier or minimal on top."

Stolch suggests reaching for structured tank tops, t-shirts, or fitted, ribbed tops. Equally, formfitting bodysuits will not only be flattering, they'll also make an ombre skirt outfit feel more current and not stuck in the '10s. "Layer with a boxy blazer, tailored vest, cropped denim jacket, or a classic moto for a modern, edgy look," Stolch says. "Finish the ensemble off with a small structured shoulder bag and some statement sunglasses or jewelry."

We also have good news in the footwear department, as almost any shoe can work with this fashion resurgence. Just familiarize yourself with these 4 shoe trends to avoid in 2025 — unless you want to look outdated.
