Outdated Sunglasses Trends To Ditch In Summer 2025

As you grab your shades to enjoy summer 2025 in the sun, you may notice that although there are a few hot trends (including the return of formerly outdated bold and chunky sunglasses), there isn't one major style that's everywhere. "In 2025, the shift is clear: instead of a single 'it' shape dominating the moment, the focus is on what suits you," Hannah Swenson, stylist, content creator and collaborator for premium eyewear brand eyebobs, exclusively explained to Women.com.
But that certainly doesn't mean there aren't still a handful of outdated sunglass trends to avoid. Swenson talked us through them while revealing the shapes, colors, and sizes to replace the eyewear that's no longer serving us. "If you're looking to align with what's feeling fresh in 2025, there are a few standout styles dominating runways and street style alike ... and a few former favorites that are starting to feel dated," Swenson explained. "Whether you're drawn to barely-there minimalism or sculptural boldness, the best frames this year don't just follow fashion, they fit you and complement both your face shape and personal style."
Inauthentic, trend-heavy sunglasses are out
Let's be honest. Many of us have been guilty of choosing sunglasses because they're on trend and not because they actually suit us. But that ends this year. 2025 is all about uniqueness and flattering shapes that feel true to us and our style. "I'm seeing a rise in frames that celebrate individuality, complement face shape, and reflect personal style rather than chase a trend. Today's eyewear is less about fitting in and more about finding what fits you," Hannah Swenson exclusively told Women.com. "2025 is about individuality — not trends for trend's sake — finding frames that feel distinctly you."
To avoid looking outdated, use our guide to find the best sunglass silhouette for your face shape. You should also consider your style, hobbies, and interests. For example, if you're not overly sporty, avoid practical-looking sunnies designed for activities, as they won't look authentic. Not into designer fashion? Then steer clear of luxury eyewear that doesn't feel 'you.'
Skinny, rectangular frames are no longer in
Super skinny, rectangular sunglasses have been having a moment for a while now thanks to the Y2K fashion revival that took hold in summer 2023. But as of 2025, that retro movement is fading fast. "The early-2000s revival had its moment, but tiny frames no longer align with the bold, empowered aesthetic of 2025," Hannah Swenson shared exclusively with Women.com.
This niche shape and style is out for good reason, too. "Their flat, horizontal lines can feel harsh, especially on more mature faces, and they tend to pull features downward rather than lift," Swenson explained.
Overly busy eyewear isn't hot
Though we've seen bejeweled pieces rule the fashion world, with embellished denim being one of the hottest 2025 trends, sunglasses won't be following suit. Hannah Swenson shared during our exclusive chat that it's time to turn away from very busy pieces for a more modern look. "Frames overloaded with patterns, hardware, or heavy logos are being replaced by more refined styles that let you shine," she said.
This minimalist lean is also related to wearing more authentic eyewear this summer. "Eyewear in 2025 isn't about hiding behind a trend — it's about using it to express exactly who you are," Swenson underscored.
Try lifted silhouettes instead
Now we know what's not trending for summer 2025, what should we reach for instead? Hannah Swenson exclusively explained to Women.com that sunglasses with a sculpted shape that compliment a wide range of ages and face shapes should be top of the list to replace your now outdated eyewear.
"Frames that tilt upward at the corners, like eyebob's Statuette, create a visual lift — instantly brightening the eyes and highlighting the cheekbones," she said. "They're flattering across age groups and strike that elusive balance between playful and polished." You could also try Joopin's Polarized Cat Eye Sunglasses or The Fresh Women's Polarized Fashion Tip Pointed Cateye Sunglasses from The Fresh Store.
Sculpted designs are on trend as well
You should also look for structured sunglasses to replace frames you don't believe will work in summer 2025. "Structured designs like To The Point from eyebobs lean into bold geometry without feeling bulky," Hannah Swenson told us, exclusively. "These conversation-starting frames deliver instant style cred and are especially flattering on wider faces," she added.
Sculpted pieces also tap into the bold frame revival we've been seeing in 2025. You could also try mosanana's Oversized Cat Eye Sunglasses or SOJOS Trendy Polarized Sunglasses For Women.
Sunglasses with pops of color are trending, too
We love a pop of color, so we're thrilled to hear that colorful sunglasses are making a comeback for summer 2025. But remember not just any shade is on trend. According to Hannah Swenson, aim for sophisticated and trendy hues on your frames and/or lenses.
"Cobalt, pistachio, and petal pink are redefining the color palette this season, bringing fresh energy to every look," Swenson said, exclusively. "A frame like Cheap Therapy from eyebobs adds bold personality without overwhelming your features. With its striking octagonal shape and average fit, it's a smart and statement-making choice- especially well-suited for more petite faces," she added. ZENOTTIC's Polarized Sunglasses Women Round in C04 Crystal Green Frame Grey Lens will work for this trend, too. Equally, SOJOS Classic Round Retro Vintage Shades in Purple come in the two hottest colors of 2025 so far, butter yellow (the on-trend color you should add to all your outfits for spring/summer 2025) and wisteria, which was one of spring's biggest trends that's seeping into summer.
