Celine Dion may not be the first star that comes to mind when we think of dramatic hair evolutions, but she's certainly had her fair share of 'dos over her legendary career. Fans who have followed the iconic French-Canadian singer since her start know well that she has changed her mane a lot, regularly showing us "A New Day Has Come" via her locks.

Many of Dion's styles have been confidence boosters, as the body shaming hater clapback queen admitted she uses her outward appearance to reflect her inner strength. "The things we put on ourselves, the cream and the hair color and the conditioner and the nails and the makeup, it's not just about, like, 'Oh I feel beautiful and sexy.' Feeling beautiful makes you feel strong. And feeling strong makes you succeed," she told Refinery29.

And succeed she certainly has, in both her career and inspiring hair transformation. Dion has boldly experimented with everything from volume boosting extensions to a divisive bleach-blond pixie cut, and her evolution is nothing short of gorgeous.

1988: We met Celine Dion with an '80s style perm

In 1988, we were introduced to Celine Dion with a hairstyle that was so of the time ... an '80s perm. That year, the singer won the Eurovision Song Contest for Switzerland, and appeared on stage with a voluminous, rounded lob made up of the most gorgeous tight curls. But this was no stage look. Dion's dark, brunette ringlets appeared to be natural and her go-to style at the time, as the beauty sported the same look while enjoying her win and spending time in Dublin, Ireland, where the contest was held.

Though the hitmaker would go on to straighten her locks or lean toward looser waves later in her career, she confirmed in a 2020 Instagram video that she hadn't lost her gorgeous curl pattern. Dion appeared in the studio while recording the track "The Chase" with a very similar texture. When asked more than three decades later by "Times Life & Style" if she would ever bring back her gorgeous ringlets permanently, Dion suggested she would, responding, "Give me the curls baby, give it to me."

1994: She swapped '80s hair trends for a totally '90s look

Celine Dion is clearly someone who pays attention to hair trends, as she swapped her '80s ringlets for a trendy '90s bixie-style crop (that's a bob and pixie mix) in 1994. On the Grammys red carpet, her dark, short strands sat high on her head with piece-y bangs that finished just above her eyebrows, which were also on trend at the time. Gone were her dramatic ringlets, though. Instead, her mane was a mix of straight and permed.

Though hot for the time, the look wasn't particularly versatile. She proved that when she wore a very similar hairstyle while performing in Los Angeles. The star attempted to give us a new version of the 'do, as she pushed her bangs back to create more volume, leaving just one strand to dangle over her forehead.

1997: Celine Dion traded in dark tresses for lighter locks with XXL glamor

By 1997, Celine Dion was a bona fide superstar attending the Oscars — and she looked every inch the glam A-Lister. She had heads turning in a gorgeous, sparkly silver gown, but our focus was firmly on her high, supermodel hair. Dion stunned with caramel highlights in her dark tresses, which had grown down past her shoulders. Her locks were a masterclass in '90s bombshell volume, as her team blew out her strands with plenty of lift at the roots. They likely added large rollers to achieve the flattering hairdo, which may also have had a little help from subtle extensions.

Later that year, Dion sported a similar look with a twist at the World Music Awards. The singer wore her hair down again but with a little less volume and a dramatic side part. The warm tone complimented her complexion, while the round cut looked gorgeous against her bone structure, confirming she didn't have to "Think Twice" about this style.

2002: Celine Dion embraced dramatic extensions

For the 2002 Grammys, Celine Dion brought the va va voom with a half up, half down style that was totally fit for a diva, complete with over-the-top extensions. Her glossy, chestnut brown tresses were adorned with gold highlights and pulled up from the sides to create a pretty bouffant at the top. She gave a nod to her early hair looks with the voluminous curls, but these were bigger, more modern, and cascaded down her back for one of her most elegant and "done" hairstyles ever.

The star was clearly still on the "more is more" extension train that same year while promoting her album "A New Day Has Come." Dion's strands were super shiny as she stepped out in an outfit akin to her home country by wearing double denim, aka the Canadian Tuxedo. That time, she styled her thick hair into a flattering side part with short, sideswept bangs.

2003: She looked drastically different with a blond pixie

Though long, diva hair is Celine's Dion signature, in 2003, she tried the complete opposite. The beauty swapped her extensions for a dramatic, blond pixie, marking her shortest look yet. During a Las Vegas press conference, she gave rockstar vibes as she paired her highly styled, golden tresses with smoky blue and gold eyeshadow. Later that year, she'd seemingly undergone another trim at the VH1 Divas Duets event and styled her short strands in a similar way; only this time, she kept her bouffant more uniform with slicked down sides.

The change was so drastic it inspired some mixed responses — but Dion was quick to defend her choice. And rightly so. "I don't think I made a mistake because I can always have long hair tonight with a wig on my head," she said on "Primetime Monday." When asked if she liked the shorter cut, the "One Heart" hitmaker replied, "There's times that I like my short hair very much. When I go play golf, when I'm a mommy, when I go out of the pool. That's great, it works very nice." However, she also admitted she missed wearing her hair longer.

Dion, who was basically unrecognizable without her hair extensions, admitted to "Times Life & Style" in 2019 she'd happily go that short again, but admitted it wasn't easier to wear than long locks. "Long hair, you can do it in a ponytail, in a chignon, it's beautiful. Short hair, you're stuck," she said. Dion doubled down on her penchant for the pixie in 2024 though, reminiscing to Vogue while looking at a photo of herself, "I don't want to sound pretentious, bit I think I look good."

2004: She went long again, cut bangs and added chunky highlights

Celine Dion didn't stick with the controversial pixie cut for long. Around this time, she hired hair stylist Zhane Richer after working with him during her Las Vegas residency shows. He told Celine Dion Forum that Dion had the pixie cut when he became her stylist, and she'd been styling the look herself. But, a couple of months into Richer's new gig, it was all change. "Sheila Stotts was brought in from L.A. to give Celine extensions and color her hair back to a beautiful caramel. I was excited, I thought she looked amazing with the longer hair and it was fun to style," Richer said.

While getting her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Dion looked drastically different. Her new extensions added plenty of length and she added full bangs. The "Beauty and the Beast" singer also tried a new color. Her tone was a mixture of red lowlights and celeb favorite chunky highlights, which made a comeback in 2024 but were huge in the '90s and into the early to mid-2000s, too. Later that year, though, she'd toned down the dimension for a slightly darker, less contrasting 'do at the World Music Awards. She kept the super long, voluminous extensions, but ditched the dramatic bangs.

2010: Celine Dion found the her signature style

Around 2010, Celine Dion found the hair look that would become her signature. Long, thick, and with an elegant wave, the rich color and complimentary cut were gorgeous against her skin tone and face shape. At the Grammy Awards, she looked years younger than her age (she was 41!) and her healthy, glossy, toffee-colored locks contributed to her youthful glow. She wore a similar, but seemingly slightly darker, version of the haircut to the premiere of "Celine: Through The Eyes of The World" the following month. The chocolate tone gave her complexion a tan glow, and the dimension in her tresses was beyond gorgeous.

The healthy, voluminous styles were likely down to natural-looking extensions, and Dion's hairstylist admitted she was just like her fellow celebs and fell victim to a few cringey extension fails. "Extensions came out all the time when it was near the time to be re-done," Zhane Richer shared with Celine Dion Forum. "Sometimes when people hug her I worry that her hair might get caught, but other than that ... no worries."

2019: She braved the chop again

By 2019, Celine Dion had tried almost every haircut except a sophisticated bob, so she gave it a try. Her extensions were gone again when she attended Paris Fashion Week, this time replaced by a shoulder-skimming version of the classic cut. Dion wore her highlighted, toffee tresses in a soft, side part and styled a modern, beachy wave we hadn't seen from her much before. Later that year, while out in New York, her bob was blunter and finished just below her chin. The "All By Myself" singer looked effortlessly elegant with her chic and timeless midi-bob that would go on to become a huge trend in 2024. The look also marked the lightest her hair had been in years. Gone were the deep brunettes and brond shades, as the stunner was undoubtedly a beautiful blond.

She admitted that year her various changes had been linked to her confidence. L'Oréal Paris took notice of her penchant for cutting and coloring too, as the beauty brand signed her as its global spokesperson. "No one can say that it's just hair. Hair makes you feel sexy," Dion, who wore L'Oreal Paris Excellence Creme Permanent Triple Care Hair Color in the shade D Dark Blonde, told Makeup.com. "The things we put on ourselves — the cream, the hair color, the conditioner, the nails and the makeup — for me, when I change from one outfit to another, it brings out my demeanor," she said. But when asked by "Times Life & Style" that year if she'd found her "happy hair place" yet, she suggested she wasn't done experimenting after entering her 50s. Dion hit back, "No. Because the best is yet to come."

2024: She let her soft, caramel waves shine as she returned to the spotlight

Celine Dion's flattering bob had grown out by 2024 and she embraced a sunny, caramel style that complimented her warm skin tone. She showed off two effortless styles that summer, suggesting Dion may have moved past the "done" styles she flaunted in the past.

At the 2024 NHL draft in June, she opted for a side part and flattering, butterscotch shade as her mane fell just past her shoulders. The layered cut had shorter strands at the front to frame her face. The singer's look was very similar when she walked the red carpet for her "I Am: Celine Dion" documentary, as her beachy, highlighted hair shone amid the photographer's flashbulbs.

Dion opting for a simpler style may have been down to her focusing on more important things than her hair. In a 2022 Instagram video, she confirmed she'd been diagnosed with stiff person syndrome and she later canceled several world tour dates and stepped back from the spotlight to focus on her health. "I have a great team of doctors working alongside me to help me get better," she told fans.

2025: Celine Dion embraced her grays

After decades of short, long, blond, brunette, and everything in between, Celine Dion was ready for another dramatic chapter in her look book in 2025. That March, the star was beyond gorgeous when she rocked her gray hair with confidence in a slicked back bun when attending a golf game in Palm Beach, Florida. The singer's light roots were clearly visible around the top of her forehead.

Dion didn't publicly address showing the world her gray roots, but fans loved seeing the star embrace them after years of dying her strands. One fan wrote on Threads, "Love the gray hair!" while another commented on Facebook, "We should normalize this."

But whether Dion grows her gray roots out, shocks us with a bold new color, or returns to the pixie cut, her enviable confidence will always carry her through. And we know she'll look stunning no matter how she expresses herself via her locks.
