The 16 Questions That You Should Really Be Asking On A First Date
Don't let those awkward pauses creep in!!
Let's just get it out there right away... dating is hard. Think back to your last date - worrying about where to go, what to wear, what to talk about....
Well, luckily, we've done a little digging and decided these XYZ questions are absolutely essential conversations to get out of the way on a first date.
1. What do you like about your job?
Regardless of if you really understand their career or you don't even know what it is yet, this is a fantastic way to learn more about what they do and also what drives them as a person. You might learn some little nuggets of gold here that could help you better understand the inner-workings of the person sitting across from you.
2. When you're not working, what do you love to do?
You want to better understand this person's hobbies and how they spend their spare time. Plus, once you get them talking about what they love to do, the conversation will flow pretty naturally!!
3. What was your hometown like growing up?
This will ease into the conversation about their childhood - which can be a very telling sign of a person's character. You'll learn about their high school experience, the sports they played, their friends, what kind of student they were... very easy conversations to keep going all night long!
4. What's your relationship like with your family?
This is a crucial conversation you need to have eventually, but if you can slip it easily into a first date conversation, you will be able to learn a lot about how your date was raised, what their values are, and if you could eventually see yourself feeling comfortable with their family as if it were your own!
5. Cats or dogs?
So for some people, this might not really matter. For others... it's a deal breaker. Better to find out right away than two years into the relationship get into a fight about buying a kitten or a puppy!
6. What movies have you been into recently?
The kind of movies that people like say a lot about who they are! Or maybe they aren't that into movies, but this question could lead to conversations about books or TV shows. And always follow up their interests with questions about why they like it or their favorite parts about it - the more interested YOU are in THEIR interests, the better the date is going to go!
7. What's your biggest pet peeve?
You might find out that it's scraping your fork with your teeth - which you'll want to know before the meal is delivered! This will give you a good insight onto what makes this person tick, plus it usually leads to funny stories.
8. Have you traveled anywhere cool recently?
If the answer is yes, ask them about it! If the answer is no, ask them their favorite place they have ever traveled. You can learn a lot about a person based on the places they choose to visit and how they choose to spend their time there.
9. Are you a coffee person?
I mean, that's important to know!!
10. If you were to leave your job, what would be your next step?
This question can be taken two ways - what their DREAM job is, however unrealistic it might be, or what their career goals are. Either way, you'll love to hear about their childhood dreams and goals, or their professional aspirations.
11. Do you like to cook?
If you two are together, will you be ordering takeout every night or eating lavish meals ala your significant other? These are the things you really need to know!
12. If you were to move somewhere else in the world, where would you go?
This is good for you to know - if their dream is to live in Florida and you're a snow bunny, it's a pretty big sign that this relationship might not work out!
13. What's your favorite thing to do with your friends?
You want to hear about their friends anyway, and this will give you big insight! Are they big partiers on the weekends? Do they go hiking together? Do they even have a close group of friends? These are all things that you'll want to know!
14. Are you a morning bird or a night owl?
Should you keep this date going long into the night hours or text them early in the AM asking them to go on a morning walk? Your compatibility somewhat depends on you two being awake during the same hours, so this is a big one!
15. What do you think you are most passionate about?
This one can be kind of awkward to slip into the conversation, but you'll be really glad you did it! This will tell you a lot about your potential future significant other - do they care about helping underprivileged children? Are they super into women's rights? Have they traveled to third world countries to build orphanages? You'll want to know this softer side of your date.
16. Any fun plans for the rest of the weekend?
