Although La La Land was all the rage at this year's Golden Globes, it was Meryl Streep, accepting the 2017 Cecil B. DeMille Award for a lifetime of notable work, that is the main focus of the headlines after the event.
During her speech, Meryl made many pointed comments about Donald Trump.
“Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners, and if you kick us all out, you’ll have nothing to watch except for football and mixed martial arts, which are not arts,” Streep started out, pointing out the diversity and beauty that makes up Hollywood.
Her speech quickly took a turn, however, as she began lamenting on one particular performance from the last year.
"There was one performance this year that stunned me. It sank its hooks in my heart. Not because it was good. There was nothing good about it. But it was effective and it did its job. It made its intended audience laugh and show their teeth. It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter. Someone he outranked in privilege, power and the capacity to fight back. It kind of broke my heart when I saw it. I still can’t get it out of my head because it wasn’t in a movie. It was real life."
She continued, by stating that "this instinct to humiliate, when it’s modeled by someone in the public platform, by someone powerful, it filters down into everybody’s life, because it kind of gives permission for other people to do the same thing. Disrespect invites disrespect. Violence incites violence. And when the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose."
Following her emotional speech, many celebrities took to Twitter to express their gratitude and praise of the highly acclaimed actress.
There has never been anyone like Meryl Streep. I love her. #GoldenGlobes— Ellen DeGeneres (@TheEllenShow) January 9, 2017
Um Meryl didn't give a fuck about that speech limit, they DID NOT play the music on her either. Serve that tea girl, put some lemon in it— Leslie Jones (@Lesdoggg) January 9, 2017

I've loved #MerylStreep as a person, as an actor overwhelmed by her immense artistry, but never more than tonight for speaking our truth!— Chaz Bono (@ChazBono) January 9, 2017

There was one particular former reality television star, whoever, who didn't have positive things to say about Meryl's speech.
That's right, unsurprisingly, Donald Trump himself took to Twitter Monday morning to respond to the criticism, yet again denying that his mocking of a disabled reporter ever took place.
Meryl Streep, one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood, doesn't know me but attacked last night at the Golden Globes. She is a.....— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 9, 2017
Hillary flunky who lost big. For the 100th time, I never "mocked" a disabled reporter (would never do that) but simply showed him.......— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 9, 2017
"groveling" when he totally changed a 16 year old story that he had written in order to make me look bad. Just more very dishonest media!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 9, 2017
And although Trump has been receiving support, over 20,000 retweets and counting, the Meryl fans have been fighting back at the President-elect as well.
Donald Trump called Meryl Streep, one of the greatest actresses in the whole of humanity, "overrated"— Blackity Black❤️🖤💚 (@FeministaJones) January 9, 2017
If you need further proof he's a liar
So I'm hearing from Donald-lovers that because Meryl Streep is an actress, her statements have no worth. Unlike, say, a reality TV star.— David Baddiel (@Baddiel) January 9, 2017

Also Trump voters: MERYL STREEP IS MEAN AND SHOULD STOP TALKING
How dare a professional actor with a career of complex and tragic roles discuss empathy and basic human decency. I for one am outraged— Dana Schwartz (@DanaSchwartzzz) January 9, 2017
People say Meryl Streep should leave politics aside because she's a rich celeb. That's all Trump is, but at least Meryl actually won an Emmy— Kaivan Shroff (@KaivanShroff) January 9, 2017
Well, for now it seems that the drama is all just getting started. We, however, applaud Meryl for her ability to speak compassionately about such an important topic. You keep doing you, Meryl, you're crushing it 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
