The film stars Vivien Leigh as Scarlett O'Hara, Clark Gable as Captain Rhett Butler, Olivia de Havilland as the kind hearted Melanie Hamilton, Leslie Howard as Ashley Wilkes, Hattie McDaniel as Mammy and Thomas Mitchell as Scarlett's spit-fire father, Gerld O'Hara. The 1939 film earned over ten Academy Award nominations including Best Music, Best Actor in a Leading Role and Best Actress in a Supporting Role. It ended up winning a total of eight Oscars as Leigh took home Best Actress in a Leading Role and McDaniel received Best Actress in a Supporting Role making her the first African American to not only be nomination but to win an Academy Award.
