It's been a tough couple of years for global politics. With the refugee crisis, xenophobia, and now the Trump election— it's easy to feel like everything is going to hell in a hand basket. So if you're wanting to yell "Give peace a chance!" at the top of your lungs, you're not alone. But try not to get too buried in the big picture. Though it's so important to be aware and engaged with what's happening around you, it's also key to remember that you can make a difference. That the problems aren't so big and overwhelming that there's no point in even trying, that you can and should keep trying.
It may not always feel that way because, like I said, it's been tough. And at times, it's been downright devastating. So take these cues and quotes about changing the world and use them to remind yourself that there's always hope. In the words of Leonard Cohen, "There's a crack in everything, that's where the light gets in." and no matter how small you feel, if you try then you can be the light getting through the crack.
So here are some quotes that the world needs right now. Because it's all about needing a little more love, sweet love.
"The world suffers a lot. Not because of the violence of bad people, but because of the silence of good people."
"It all beings and ends in your mind. What you give power to, has power over you if you allow it."
"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."
"Be doing what you love, you inspire and awaken the hearts of others."
"You can't always be nice; that's how people take advantage of you."
"The appearance of things changes according to the emotions; and thus we see magic and beauty in them, while the magic and beauty are really in ourselves."
"Build someone up. Put their insecurities to sleep. Remind them they're worthy. Tell them they're magical. Be light in a too often dim world."
"You don't have to be perfect to be amazing."
"Wake up humans you're endangered too."
"Normality is a paved road, it's comfortable to walk. But no flowers grow on it."
"Collect moments not things."
"Stop be afraid of what could go wrong, focus on what could go right."
"If you feel like you don't fit in, in this world, it is because you are here to help create a new one."
"Be the change you want to see in the world."
"Somewhere inside all of us is the power to change the world."
"Attract what you expect, reflect what you desire, become what you respect, mirror what you admire."
If the world feels like an overwhelming place sometimes, you're not alone. There is so much hurt and pain that it can be overwhelming to know where to start if you want to make a difference. But don't underestimate the power of bringing a little joy, a little light, a little compassion into the world. It can be in big ways, but it also can be in little ones. And if you need a reminder that there can be change— that you can be the change— then look to some of the great inspirers and revolutionaries. They'll help inspire you, even when you're feeling at your least inspired.
Because there's always room for hope, for positivity. And so much of it comes down changing your point of view. If you remind yourself that you autonomous, that you are powerful, that you are able to make an impact, then you're so much more likely to get out there and try rather than backing down. It can seem out of your reach, but it never is. You just need to believe it.
That why we have role models, why we have ground breakers and rain makers. So look to them for words of encouragement and make sure to take those words to heart.
