The Hills may be over but our obsession with Lauren Conrad’s hair definitely isn’t. The 30-year old has been many things: reality television personality, author, designer, the girl who didn’t go to Paris. But one consistent role she has held is the girl with beachy waves we desperately want to achieve. Thankfully, Lauren’s longtime hairstylist Kristin Ess launched The Beauty Department, a website that features hair tutorials including the famous waves as seen on Conrad. Turns out, this is actually easy to achieve and all our previous attempts were just missing a few tricks.
Steps To Get The Look
- The first step is to curl your hair with a 1” spring barrel curling iron. Ess recommends spraying your hair with a thickening spray before you dry it to have the style hold longer. Curl all around your head away from your face. A timesaving beauty hack that Ess also recommends is to just curl the top layer of your hair in the back to, “avoid that bulky look.”
- While you can stop after step 1, if you are looking for the relaxed curls look this is where hair queen Ess brings in her secret weapon: a straightener. That’s right, AFTER you’ve curled your hair, you are going to gently and quickly tap, tap, tap on your curls about an inch down from your root to the ends. Ess illustrates this step with a video on her Instagram
- Ess finishes off the look by adding a touch of pomade or serum to separate the curls a bit.
Seriously, SO easy but that little straightener trick changes the game from structured curls to creating a piecey beach-inspired look that we see on Conrad all the time! It’s the perfect midway point between tight ringlets and super soft waves!
