Romantic suspense, along with romantic thrillers and mysteries, is always a popular subgenre. Harlequin even has entire imprints dedicated to romantic suspense, including Harlequin Intrigue, Harlequin Romantic Suspense, and Love Inspired Suspense!
It feels like a romance subgenre that is only going to continue to grow as readers crave more tales of people taking down the bad guys, putting their demons to rest, solving crimes, and delving into incredible mysteries. We found a few romantic suspense novels we think you'll enjoy, including people returning home to solve the case that's always haunted them and bodyguards putting their lives on the line for the one they're falling in love with.
1. Lotus Effect by Trisha Wolfe
In Trisha Wolfe's Lotus Effect, Lakin Hale is a true crime writer, helping solve cold case. However, there's one case she's never been able to solve. Her own, an attack that left her for dead.
She begins a new case, working with Special Agent Rhys Nolan. The details of the murder case they're working together resembles Lakin's own case too much for her liking. Her dreams are haunted by the silhouette of the man who attacked her.
Now, a victim calls to Lakin, buried deep in a watery grave of lotuses, and bringing up memories stolen from Lakin the night she was attacked.
2. In Safe Hands by Victoria Sue
Maverick Delgardo was a helicopter pilot in the Air Force until injuries ended his career. Afterwards, he became bitter and turned to alcohol. Out of the blue, his sister asks him if he'll use his skills to be private protection for disgraced popstar, Deacon Daniels. Reluctantly, Mav agrees.
Both Deacon's career and reputation were ruined after a reporter released a devastating exposé. No job and no money, Deacon also lost custody of his niece. When things can't seem to get worse, Deacon begins getting threatening messages from a stalker who soon turns to murder. Immediately, Mav is attracted to Deacon but, when the body count starts stacking up, he isn't sure if he's capable of protecting him from a killer. He knows he can't walk away now that he's fallen for Deacon. Somehow, he must find the strength to protect Deacon and his young niece.

If they want to prevent anyone else from becoming his next victim, Sophie and her team will need to act quickly. Along the way, Sophie's relationship with her long-term girlfriend, Yvonne, is put to the test and, she soon finds she may even lose herself along the way.
5. Going Deep by Anne Calhoun
Part of Anne Calhoun's Alpha Ops series, Going Deep is the story of singer Cady Ward. With plans to head home for the holidays, her manager decides to hire cop Conn McCormick as protection due to the uptick in rabid fans. Cady just wants a bit of peace and quite while she waits for her new album to come out. She doesn't see the need for a bodyguard just because of a few vague email threats, even if Conn is nice to look at.
When Conn gets assigned to protect Cady Ward, he's in the middle of a career scandal and thinks guarding the popstar is a waste of his skills. Though Cady does prove to be a nice distraction while Internal Affairs digs into his case. Their attraction quickly deepens into something more even as Conn discovers a plot against Cady's life.
6. In the Waning Light by Loreth Anne White
