39 Instagram Captions for LGBTQ+ Pride Month

The LGBTQ+ community is celebrating everywhere now that it is finally Pride month once again, and we've compiled a list of 39 Instagram captions for LGBTQ+ Pride month! As fun as Pride parades and drag events are, it is important to remember the roots of Pride here in the United States, which began after police officers raided the Stonewall Inn on June 28, 1969. Police raiding gay bars was pretty common given the homophobic climate at the time when "homosexual relations" were still illegal. This time, however, people fought back and the raid became a riot.

The police showed up under the notion that Stonewall was operating without a liquor license and began arresting and "roughing up" both employees and patrons. Many folks were arrested for not abiding the law at the time of wearing "at least three articles of gender-appropriate clothing." People outside the bar began to riot as they watched LGBT people get loaded into police vans, including notable LGBT activists and pioneers Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, and Stormé DeLarverie. The riot lasted for five days and, while it wasn't the first or last LGBT riot and protest, it became a symbol of "resistance to social and political discrimination."

Today, the Stonewall Riot is a symbol of resistance against the oppression LGBTQ people face. Pride events around the United States and the entire world grew out of the event, transforming into a yearly celebration and reminder.

To help commemorate Pride Month 2018, we've gathered a series of incredible quotes and ideas for you to use in your Pride Month Instagram captions!
