1. Sarah Drew Didn't Have To Audition For April Kepner To Get The Part
In an interview with Glamour, Sarah revealed that she didn't have to audition for her part on Grey's Anatomy because she was already "in" for working with showrunner Shonda Rhimes in the past.
Sarah said, "I actually didn't have to audition. I had just worked with Shonda on a pilot that didn't get picked up and they wanted to bring me on for a two-episode guest star appearance on Greys the season before. It was for the role of a patient, but it just didn't work out for scheduling reasons."
2. Speaking Of, April Kepner Was Once Judy On Private Practice
MIND. BLOWN. So, that project that Sarah had previously worked on with Shonda was a two-parter episode of Grey's Anatomy's first spinoff, Private Practice, which followed the life and career of Addison Montgomery. On Private Practice, Sarah played a character named Judy. WHOA.
3. April Kepner Was ONLY Supposed To Be A Guest Star
So apparently, Sarah was only supposed to be on Grey's Anatomy for two episodes as a guest star, but she did so well that Shonda and company decided to write her in as a series regular! Sarah said, "She was supposed to be a two-episode guest star. I knew the plan was for her to be fired when I got the job, but shortly after those episodes aired, my agent called and said, ‘They want to bring you back, and it might be for a series regular.’ That’s how that happened!”
Talk about crazy! Can you even imagine what Grey's would be like without Kepner? We sure can't!
4. After We Found Out April Kepner Was Pregnant, Sarah Drew Announced She Was Pregnant In Real Life
Yup! Funny how life imitates art, kind of! A few months after April Kepner found out that she was pregnant in Season 10 of Grey's Anatomy, the world found out that Sarah was pregnant in real life! Very cool!
5. And Sarah Ended Up Giving Birth HOURS After Filming April's Birth Scene
Now, *that's some dedication. Everyone knows that in Season 11, April gave birth in an intense scene with Ben Warren. But, Sarah actually went into labor with her baby Hannah within 10 hours of filming the scene.
Sarah said, "It was a big, long ten-hour work day of doing the labor and delivery scene on the show, and I went home — it was 8 p.m. — and at 6 a.m. I woke up with a really intense contraction three-and-a-half weeks early," she explained. "So I didn't think it was labor. I just sort of thought it was a Braxton Hicks [false labor] or whatever. So I did taxes at my desk, and every once in a while I had to lean over the table. And then I went in at 4:30, and then at 6 a.m. the next morning, Hannah came."
6. April Kepner's Second Cousin Is Ryan Atwood
If you love The O.C. or Gotham, you'll love this. Sarah's second cousin is Ben McKenzie! In an interview with Glamour, Ben said, "She’s such a great girl. I see her and her husband, Peter, and their little one, Micah, a bit. I haven’t seen them in a while because I’m shooting, but she’s pregnant again, which is great." We'd love to see these two collaborate! Ryan Atwood on Grey's Anatomy? Yes, please!
7. Like April on Grey's, Sarah Drew Is Religious
One of the things that Sarah related to most about playing April is that she also identifies as Christian. Sarah was most excited to play April because she isn't a stereotypical Christian. In fact, this makes the character all the more authentic. Sarah told Fox, "Shonda came to me and said you know a lot about this and to tell [April’s] story authentically, we need your input.’”
8. And April Kepner Wasn't Even Religious Originally
Yup! Once the writers et Sarah Drew, they were immediately inspired by Sarah and turned April into a Christian. Sarah said, "For April, the first thing that was revealed was she was a virgin. I waited until I was married to have sex so I understood April’s motivations. The writers thought it would be a really cool and interesting story to tell that isn’t seen too often."
9. Like April, Sarah Had Dark Times During Her Marriage
Sarah has been remarkably candid when it comes to her personal life. She told Glamour that there was a moment in her life where things were so bad, that she almost walked away from her marriage.
Sarah said, "Here’s a big risk: Staying with my husband during the blackest time in our marriage. Several years into our marriage, I wanted to walk away and I didn’t. My dad said that even if it feels hopeless, it doesn’t mean that it is hopeless."
But luckily, things worked out through counseling. Sarah added, "Walking through the pain of that period of time and getting to the other side of it, I didn’t know a partnership like that existed. You have the honeymoon phase and then the figuring out marriage together, living together and playing house, and then it’s hard. It wasn’t actually anything that either of us had done, and it wasn’t a moment of betrayal…It was just being in a relationship, not knowing how to communicate and how to have a partner. So I’m feeling unloved and he’s feeling unloved and it’s just sad. Counseling was amazing, but I didn’t know how loved I was until after my marriage had gone through its darkest time."
10. Sarah Drew's Father Helped Shonda Write A Scene Of Grey's Anatomy
Clearly, Sarah's life has been a little similar to April's. So, Shonda always allowed some input from Sarah to see where they could go with April. Before Japril's great love story really began, April was engaged to Matthew Taylor. The couple went to premarital counseling, and Sarah's father offered some advice on how to write the scene. Cool, right?
Sarah said, "My dad is a minister and they called me when they were writing the scene where April and Matthew were going to premarital counseling. They wanted to know what my take was on it. We have people in the writing room that are Catholic, but they’re writing April more as a Protestant, so they wanted to know what some specifics might be. And I said, ‘The last time I was in premarital counseling was 12 years ago, but my Dad does it every year, so give him a call.’ So they called and talked to him, and specific things that he said to them wound up in the script. It was so cool."
