Blanche Devereaux (Rue McClanahan) is the owner of The Golden Palace Hotel. She grew up in Atlanta where she was a Southern Debutante. She now lives in a house with her three best friends in Miami. She's the promiscuous one of the four women, and she definitely makes it known. Her late father, Curtis "Big Daddy" Hollingsworth married a young widow who Blanche was never a huge fan of, causing a rift in their relationship.
Portrayed by Beatrice Arthur, Dorothy Zbornak. She has a strong, intelligent, and sarcastic personality that sometimes makes her come off as intimidating. However, this arguably makes her the most grounded of the four women in the house. Hailing from New York City, she now resides in Miami where she teaches English to high schoolers. Dorothy also loves to go on dates in her free time, and she's a total bookworm.
Sophia Petrillo (Estelle Getty) was born in Sicily but now lives in Miami. She's probably the most humorous of the four, and there's never a dull moment when she's around. Before moving into the house, she lived in a nursing home. The home burnt down under mysterious circumstances, and rumor has it that she was being the incident. She married her first husband at 14, and claims to have had many romantic affairs throughout her lifetime. Did we mention she's also Dorothy's mother?
Rose Nylund (Betty White) lives in the same house as her three best friends. For a lack of a better word, she's the dumb blonde of the group. However, she's good-natured and always means well with her actions, even if they aren't always the best. She was born in Michigan to a monk and a 19-year-old girl who died in childbirth. Rose subsequently was put into an orphanage for eight years before she was finally adopted. To no surprise, she claims to have had a lot of boyfriends throughout her lifetime, fifty-six to be exact.
