HER STORY:

Kay Granger is the first Republican woman to represent Texas in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Kay was born in Greenville, Texas and raised in Fort Worth. She never intended to become a politician, majoring in education and becoming a high school journalism and English teacher.

Kay was inspired to get involved in politics when local issues began impacting her own community. Since then, she has been recognized by CQ's Roll Call as one of the 25 Most Influential Women in Congress.

HER VIEWS:

Economy:

Kay is a proponent of cutting what she sees as wasteful government spending in order to ensure Americans' taxpayer dollars are used wisely. She also wants to balance the budget without increasing taxes.

Education:

Having previously worked as a a high school journalism and English teacher, Kay is passionate about raising students to be our nation's future leaders.

Kay's experience working as a college instructor has given her unique insight into the need for education reform. Kay believes that local school boards, not the federal government, are better equipped to improve schools and assess student needs.

Environment:

Kay supports the repeal of the crude oil export ban and the Keystone XL Pipeline. She believes they will create jobs and improve the economy.

Foreign Policy:

Kay is a member of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee and strongly supports weapons programs such as F-22, H-1, V-2, and Joint Strike Fighter. She thinks military might is crucial to defeating terrorism.

Health Care:

Kay voted against President Obama's Affordable Care Act legislation in 2009 and also voted for its repeal. She wants to address the rising costs of health care in America.

Immigration:

Kay believes it is the Department of Homeland's Security's responsibility to protect our borders and keep Americans safe. She believes border control is crucial for the country's national security and economic growth.

Women's Rights:

Kay recognizes the many challenges than women face when attempting to break the glass ceiling.

She staunchly believes that women play a pivotal role in the health of America's economy.

"I don't think many people appreciate the widespread and important role women play in the economy – they are the mothers, small business owners, homeowners and workers," said Granger. "They truly make up the backbone of our economy."

She has been a champion for women's rights in underdeveloped nations and applauds Afghanistan's efforts to move away from its past of banning women from public space.

Kay is pro-life and does not support federal funds being used for any health benefits coverage that includes coverage of abortion and disagrees with partial-birth abortions except to save the mother's life. However, she has voted no on banning Family Planning funding in American aid abroad.
