A Complete Guide To Lady Gaga And Madonna's Feud
Why Are Lady Gaga And Madonna Feuding?
In the previews for Lady Gaga's Netflix documentary, Five Foot Two, she begins to open up about her thoughts on Madonna, saying, "I admired her always, and I still admire her no matter what she might think of me."
We also know that Lady Gaga will dive even deeper into their feud in the documentary, as the clip cuts her off as she continues, "The only thing that really bothers me about her, is that..." Talk about a cliff-hanger!
But let's back up: What is Lady Gaga and Madonna's feud even about?
Were Madonna and Lady Gaga Ever Friends?
Once upon a time, Lady Gaga and Madonna were friends! Or at least, they appeared to be. They posed together at a Marc Jacobs fashion show in 2009, when Lady Gaga's career was first gaining speed, and after the Mother Monster professed her love for Madonna, telling Extra the pop icon is "a beautiful woman."
Then, at the MTV VMAs Madonna admitted she was "very flattered" by comparisons to the "Poker Face" singer.
What Happened To Lady Gaga And Madonna's Friendship?
The feud between Lady Gaga and Madonna began when people noticed similarities between Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" and Madonna's 1989 hit "Express Yourself".
Madonna admitted that she was bothered by the similar sounds, telling Rolling Stone in 2015, "The only time I ever criticized Lady Gaga was when I felt like she blatantly ripped off one of my songs." However, she maintained that she considers Gaga a "very talented singer and songwriter."
In 2016, Lady Gaga reignited the feud by throwing shade at the Queen of Pop during an interview with Beats 1 Radio. Rejecting any comparison between herself and Madonna and implying that she is more of an artist. Lady Gaga candidly explained, "I play a lot of instruments. I write all my own music. I spend hours and hours a day in the studio. I'm a producer. I'm a writer. What I do is different."
Of course, she couldn't let the comments slide and Madonna responded in a now-deleted post on Instagram, "Can't hear you. Too busy being awesome."
And judging by the preview of Lady Gaga's documentary, this feud is about to get even deeper.
