Say Goodbye To Flat Hair: Copy This Showstopping Silver Lob Transformation

There's a viral gray transformation that's stealing hearts online and inspiring those who are sick of dying their hair darker shades. Colorist wizard Jack Martin welcomed a new client who flew all the way to his California-based salon from Colorado. The woman had been dying her hair dark for years, and finally had enough of it. It was no small feat, however, to lighten the woman's hair into her natural gray. "10 HOURS of work. YEARS of dark box dye. And ONE reaction I will never forget!" Martin wrote in the video's caption. A fun note: Martin is the colorist behind Jane Fonda's gorgeous gray transformation, so he's truly a pro.

"I started by creating a beautiful layered cut with voluminous layers," Martin explained. "Then, I carefully lifted years of dark color in foils, pre-toned to remove yellow and finished with a silver toner." The transformation worked beautifully on the client, which Martin happily acknowledged. "The most rewarding part wasn't just the final color, he noted in the caption. "It was watching her see herself in a completely different light." Martin also stated that the goal of a gray transformation isn't about shaving off years. "To me, embracing gray isn't about looking younger or older," he said. "It's about celebrating your natural beauty and feeling confident in your own skin." The client looked incredibly happy — not to mention radiant — with her gorgeous new silver do.

Soft volumizing layers in a lob cut can help with a gray hair transformation

Jack Martin's client was able to achieve such a flattering final look thanks, in large part, to the soft layered lob cut. This is one of the best haircuts for older women, as proven by Céline Dion's honey blond lob, which is the perfect length. "This is a good transition from kind of longer, below-the-shoulders, to right at the shoulders, keeping it kind of fresh," hairstylist Eric Marshall Wright, owner of the Nashville-based Eric Marshall Salon, told Women.com exclusively. "For a woman who wants to show off her décolleté, I think this is a great option as well." Not only was Martin able to lift his client's dark dye, but he was also able to send her off with a chic cut.

The truth is that finally embracing gray can be a beautifying choice for many women. Another client of Martin's dodged going gray for years and when she left his salon, she looked 10 years younger. This is because dark dyes can look harsh over time, particularly as skin and eyes lighten with age. So a brightening silver hair color can actually look softer and more flattering with one's skin tone and eye color; as Martin said, the goal with going gray isn't to look younger. It's about feeling one's best and facing the world with confidence.
