Emmy Rossum Is Making Frizz Chic, And Her Trick For All The Curly Hair Girlies Requires Zero Tools
For many curly-haired folks, frizz is enemy number one. But for Emmy Rossum, a bit of frizz is the key to giving her curls that effortlessly tousled, lived-in look. "It's [called] ruffing," the actor shared in a short video demonstrating her technique, which involves rubbing sections of hair between the palms to fluff them up and create a voluminous finish. "You've got to rough up the ends for some texture," she said in another Instagram demonstration. "People are afraid of frizz; don't be afraid, get right in there, touch the hair."
The frizzy hair trick comes fully endorsed by celebrity hairstylist Vernon François, who has referred to Rossum's curly mane as "one of Hollywood's most incredible heads of hair." The hairstylist explained that there's intention and artistry behind the "Furious" actor's look. "Embrace your curls by getting your hands in there and letting them come alive! Once your hair is fully dry, gently scrunch to soften any product cast — then gently fluff, fluff, fluff at the roots to encourage volume and movement," he captioned the video shared on Instagram.
François also encouraged embracing curls in all their imperfect glory, and explained, "Give your curls space to express themselves. A little separation, a little lift, and that lovely lived-in feel can bring so much personality to your finished look. Every curl doesn't need to sit perfectly in place. There's something beautiful about allowing your hair to be itself — unapologetically free."
How to get Emmy Rossum's chic curls
Emmy Rossum is stunning when she rocks her natural hair texture, but according to her hairstylist, Lacy Redway, there's more to the actor's beautiful spirals than meets the eye. To recreate her look, a fresh cut is a great place to start. "Ask your hairstylist for round layers," Redway said in a Real Simple exclusive, noting that the technique will best highlight your curl pattern.
To keep curls hydrated and healthy, Redway recommends using a good moisturizing shampoo and conditioner before styling. Emmy Rossum, whose style evolution shows she just keeps getting better, previously shared with Vogue that Living Proof's in-shower styler is one of her go-to products. Redway explained, "You want to protect your strands before styling and lock moisture into your hair, which will give you the best results."
She also advises sectioning the hair while it's still damp before applying a defining curl cream. "I section the hair into four quadrants and then massage the curl cream into the hair," Redway said. To achieve Rossum's voluminous finish, Redway uses a diffuser to shape the curls. "I use a dryer with a diffuser to create shape," she explained. "I have the client lean their head forward first, then backward, then side to side for 20 seconds in each spot. I have them repeat this rotation to get their hair in a good formation."
