Susan Sarandon Rewrote Mother-Of-The-Bride Style With A Colorful Twist
For her daughter Eva Amurri's second wedding, Susan Sarandon rewrote the mother-of-the-bride style playbook in a summery-inspired pantsuit, perfectly suited for Amurri's 'French garden party' theme. Held in New York's Hudson Valley, Amurri's June 2024 nuptials to chef Ian Hock saw the "Thelma & Louise" star step out in a custom floral-print ensemble by SuitShop, featuring structured shoulders and a tailored silhouette. For added comfort, the actor paired the outfit with white platform sneakers featuring a cork-trimmed midsole and a ridged rubber outsole. Sarandon wore her wavy auburn tresses loose, cascading over her shoulders to complete her chic yet laid-back look.
Sarandon's casual-formal mother-of-the-bride attire was a far cry from the Lela Rose-designed lace-embellished gown she wore to Amurri's first wedding in 2011. With its colorful floral print and modern aesthetic, the pantsuit also puts the "Stepmom" star among other celeb moms that proved frumpy mother of the bride or groom looks are a thing of the past. "We do get a lot of women in general coming to us because they want an alternative to traditional dresses as special-occasion attire," SuitShop co-founder Jeanne Foley told People.
Amurri, an actor and lifestyle blogger, is Sarandon's daughter with Italian director Franco Amurri, whom Sarandon dated from 1984 to 1988. After their relationship ended, Sarandon met fellow actor Tim Robbins, who helped raise Amurri during their 21-year courtship. The happy family posed for photos shared by People on Instagram, delighting fans. "What an absolutely beautiful wedding and family," one person commented.
Sarandon helped design her custom pantsuit
Besides celebrity brides who wore pants to their wedding, pantsuits are becoming an increasingly popular choice for mothers of the bride and groom for several reasons. They offer comfort and a wide range of styles, from flowy silhouettes and stylish tailoring to eye-catching fabrics — as seen on stars like Glenn Close and Rosie O'Donnell, who brought a personal flair to her mother-of-the-groom style in a champagne-colored pantsuit with a floral motif.
According to SuitShop's Jeanne Foley, Sarandon was keen on getting her pantsuit just right. Rather than leaving Foley's team to piece together her mother-of-the-bride ensemble, she wanted to be involved in every aspect of the design process. "Our collaboration with Susan on her custom floral suit began in December 2023, after working with her daughter Eva on more traditional wedding suits for her fiancé and [then] two sons," Foley told People back in 2024.
Planning began months in advance, with Sarandon exchanging feedback with the SuitShop designers on samples and 3D renderings. "Susan was very involved in creating her custom design. She helped with the creative direction by sourcing inspirational examples that led to a bouquet-esque floral pattern we all loved," Foley said. Together, they settled on a "Colorful Wildbloom" print in SuitShop's 'Perfect Drape' fabric, featuring 'watercolor daffodils, violets, morning glories, delphiniums, roses and poppies woven into greenery,' as per People.
