What The Leading Ladies Of American Primeval Look Like In Real Life

Actors of historical dramas are often tasked with majorly changing up their look to believably enter a different time period, with stylized costumes and history-based hair differentiating characters from their real-life counterparts. This was the case for the leading ladies of the 2025 "American Primeval" mini-series, a western drama that took a gory look back at a specific period of American history. Set during the Utah War in 1857, the show depicts violence originating from Mormon militias, American soldiers, and Native American tribes, in addition to the rugged, unpredictable land that everyone is laying claim to.

While a lot of men, including the historical Brigham Young, fill out the Netflix show's various conflicts, some compelling female characters also play important roles in the narrative, reminding us of the heroines from Kristin Hannah's beloved historical fiction books. For instance, Sara Rowell, played by Betty Gilpin, is tasked with the protection of her young son as they attempt to travel west and reunite with her husband, while Abish, played by Saura Lightfoot-Leon, makes up one-half of a newlywed couple traveling with a train of pioneers with the intent to settle nearby.

Not only were these characters dressed in historically-inspired clothing, but they often sported a hefty layer of blood and grime. So, it's only natural that the real-life actors behind these noteworthy roles look different when walking the red carpet or sharing snapshots online. In fact, "American Primeval" was even nominated for an Emmy in the Outstanding Period Costumes category, pointing to the hard work that went into these onscreen transformations.

Betty Gilpin has a lot more sparkle when she's not fighting to survive

As mentioned, Betty Gilpin appeared as the determined Sara Rowell in "American Primeval," with her character dressed on the austere side throughout the limited series. The first episode sees her wearing a dark bonnet and shawl, which she sheds to reveal a modest dress with buttons up the front and a worn cream collar underneath. She has the appearance of having no makeup, which makes sense for the time period and setting, and wears her blond hair in a low updo consisting of some twists and braids.

In contrast, Gilpin's real-life approach to beauty can be seen at red carpet events and public spottings. The New York native typically looks much more vibrant than her historical counterpart, but still prefers a light hand when it comes to her makeup. "Many of the characters I've played in film or TV wear a lot of makeup, so whenever I'm doing a press day, I just want to look like myself," she told Into The Gloss back in 2017.

Gilpin is a natural brunette, but belongs on the list of celebrities who can pull off light or dark hair colors. She typically wears a medium to light shade of blond, similar to what's seen on "American Primeval," but she isn't afraid to change up her look for a role. When it comes to fashion, the actor's red carpet wardrobe naturally has more sparkle and color than her on-screen character, with the star often opting for a sense of understated glamour or chic playfulness.

Saura Lightfoot-Leon is much more chic on the red carpet

As mentioned, Saura Lightfoot-Leon appears as Abish in "American Primeval," a newlywed Mormon who is taken captive by a Native American tribe following an attack on her caravan. On the show, the Dutch-born actor wears a silk-weave wool dress in a dark brown color for a good portion of the show before donning traditional Shoshone garb. Her long hair is frequently styled in a long braid or a simple half-up look.

Needless to say, Lightfoot-Leon takes a pretty different style approach when she isn't in character. Perhaps the most notable change is that she chopped her long tresses into a bob, which she's worn textured and slicked back. While she hasn't talked much about her real-life beauty philosophy, her red carpet appearances suggest that she favors simple makeup looks. The "Hoard" actor is frequently pictured wearing her full brows with classic eyeliner applied across her top lash line and a swipe of lipstick, though she has opted for glowy, bold blush at times.

Lightfoot-Leon's red carpet lookbook includes a lot of tailored elegance and refined minimalism, with blazers being a notable repeat. She spoke briefly with Flip Your Wig about her approach to dressing up for star-studded events. "I think it's about finding you within the clothes," she said. "And not clothes wearing you. I think that's the main thing." While Lightfoot-Leon definitely fits the part of Abish when in costume, her personal sense of style definitely shines through in real-life.

Shawnee Pourier reveals an effortless style on social media

Next, Shawnee Pourier made a big impact as Two Moons, a young mute girl from the Shoshone tribe. After a traumatic event causes her to flee her home, the character accompanies Sara and her young son Devin on their dangerous trek. Her mismatched outfit, featuring European-style lace-up boots and a long coat, reflect her transitory status, while her hair remains simply styled in dual braids with a middle-part.

Though Pourier has credits on other projects, appearing in "Stranger Things" and "Dark Winds," the Indigenous actor hasn't made her red carpet debut. Instead, her Instagram provides fans with a glimpse into how her everyday look contrasts her "American Primeval" character. One element of her real-life look that stands out is her modern piercing, as she's been pictured wearing a septum ring and previously showed off a vertical labret and classic nose ring. The rising star also favors casual makeup looks that include fully-lined eyes and two-toned lip colors.

Additionally, Pourier appears to have a cool, easygoing style reflective of Gen Z aesthetics. She's worn beloved generational staples like t-shirts layered over long sleeves, baggy jeans, and baby tees. The actor definitely styles herself differently outside of "American Primeval," but she looks stunning either way.

Irene Bedard is a natural beauty

Irene Bedard, who's most known for voicing Pocahontas in the eponymous Disney classic, appears as Winter Bird in the Netflix series. As the leader of the Shoshone Tribe, she attempts to find peace with the American government to protect her people. She's also the mother of Red Feather, another notable character played by Derek Hinkey. Throughout "American Primeval," she wears a historically-inspired outfit including a hide dress, moccasins, and elk teeth accessories.

Bedard seems to favor natural beauty in real-life, often sporting pared-back or subtle makeup looks at red carpet events and in social media posts. Based on these appearances, her go-to products are classic eyeliner and a subtle lip color, with her brows maintaining an arched look over the years, as well. In this way, her beautiful brown irises and full cheekbones often take center stage in her snapshots.

As for style, Bedard has walked the red carpet in both elegant evening gowns and more casual, color-filled looks. She has also sported jewelry informed by Native American tradition, including pieces featuring statement-making turquoise.
