Entering Your 60s Might Just Be The Most Exciting Time To Overhaul Your Style

Once you've reached the big 6-0 (or any age beyond that unfortunate goth phase, really), you might think you've put all your identity crises behind you, but that's not necessarily true. Your golden years can be a time of enormous upheaval, both for your life and your closet. "The 60s are a great time to update your wardrobe because your life typically changes day to day," Katie Schuppler, founder of KS Style Consulting, exclusively told Women.com. "Whether that be retiring or being an empty nester, when your lifestyle changes, so does your style needs."

Of course, that can be a daunting prospect to someone who may not have reconsidered her vibe since the Bush administration, junior or senior. Where does one even start? Schuppler suggested starting where you already are: the internet. "I would look for inspiration online, social accounts, fashion sites, and Pinterest to see what speaks to you and start making an inspiration board or album on your phone," she said. Whether the fisherman aesthetic is the laid-back, coastal vibe your wardrobe needs or you find you gravitate towards a maximalist "more is more" look, the heart knows what the body wants on it.

Overhauling your style starts at home (plus a few key pieces)

Speaking of starting where you already are, Schuppler pointed out that the easiest way to figure out where to go is to look back at where you've been. "Starting with a closet clean-out to rid your wardrobe of anything you no longer need or wear while making a shopping list as you go through helps to give you a guideline of what to shop for," she exclusively told Women.com. In clothes as in life, you must release what no longer serves you in order to make more room for what you now need.

When it comes to specific items that will help you find the style that suits you best in your 60s, however, she also had some ideas. "A few pairs of comfortable/relaxed jeans or trouser pants, third pieces like cardigans or jackets, loose button-downs in a cozy fabric, fashionable sneakers that are versatile, and loose fitting dresses that can take you from day to night" are great options to get you started, she said. After all, fads come and go, but curating a closet full of anti-trend staples that work for you will never fail you in your 60s and beyond.
