Stockard Channing Says The 'Pattern Of Her Life Shifted' After The Death Of Her Partner In 2014

Famous for her roles in "Grease" and "Practical Magic," Stockard Channing was never the same again after the tragic passing of her longtime partner, Daniel Gillham. "My partner, Daniel, died in 2014 and it was more devastating than I realized," Channing wrote in an August 2026 essay for The Sunday Times.

The actor met Gillham, a cinematographer, on the set of "A Time of Destiny" in 1988, and they began dating two years later. They lived in Maine on a 16-acre property on Georgetown Island for decades, but after his passing, life as she knew it completely changed. "The pattern of my life shifted," she said. "So, I shifted my life from Maine." Channing relocated to London on her own in 2019. "I've lived alone since I lost Daniel and I'm happy being a recluse," she said.

Though they never married, losing Gillham also shifted her hopes of ever finding love again. Channing had four previous marriages to Walter Channing Jr., Paul Schmidt, David Debin, and David Rawle, but none lasted anywhere close to the 24 years she had with Gillham. Speaking with The Sunday Times in January 2025, the then-80-year-old actor said she would rather spend the next phase of her life being single. "I'm consolidating, thank you very much," she said. "I'm very happy with the friends I have. Life is very good," suggesting she will not be joining those few celebs who found their happily ever after later in life.

After such a major shift in her life, Stockard Channing said she willingly embraced a reclusive lifestyle. She told The Sunday Times, "I was married four times before Daniel and they all represent epochs of me," noting that she is content with being alone moving forward. Though life changed after Gillham's passing, Channing eventually eased herself back into acting. While she took on a few movie and TV roles in the last few years, she also put her focus into theatre, appearing in productions such as "Night, Mother" and "Elektra."

In September 2026, she took to the big screen, reprising her role as Frances Owens in the highly anticipated "Practical Magic" sequel, opposite Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock. Making a rare blue-carpet appearance at the film's London premiere (pictured above), the actor surprised fans who hadn't seen her in quite some time. "Oh, I've always loved Stockard Channing and I'm so glad to see her. She looks great..." an Instagram fan wrote on a post shared by Entertainment Tonight. "Stockard is iconic!" said another, while a third person said her time away in reclusion hasn't dulled her star power. They wrote, "I know Stockard Channing recently said she relocated alone to London and enjoys the life of a recluse, but she definitely still gives off sassy and fiery Rizzo energy anytime she shows up at any events! That woman has such a great presence."
