Study Hints Older Women On The Dating Market Wouldn't Mind A Younger Beau

As long as you believe in it, love can happen at any age. And according to a new 2026 study conducted by The Matchmaking Company, the older a woman gets, the more likely she is to expand her horizons and choose a younger beau. In fact, according to the study, over one-third of the surveyed adults in their sixties would be open to a partner that is at least 10 years younger, as well as 31% in their fifties. Similar to how age-gap friendships have been proven to be the gift that keeps on giving, dating a younger partner allows women to get a fresh perspective and energy to their lives.

While you might be wondering whether there's any truth to this study, the internet has taken notice of the shift, too. On platforms like Reddit, users actively discuss the rise in relationships between older women and younger men. And, if you need more proof, Hollywood and literary works are reflecting the same mindset. For instance, films like "The Idea of You" (which is based on one of the best age gap romance books), "Babygirl," and "Lonely Planet," show that whether told as a sweet, sweeping romance or a dark, intense thriller, they're proof that audiences can't get enough of this trope.

The survey numbers, online discussions, and box office hits are telling the same story. Mature women being comfortable dating younger beaus is no longer an exception. It's women finding confidence as they age and knowing what they want, which starts with choosing a partner who matches their energy, regardless of their age.

In modern day, women are choosing spark over formula

Women's lives are much different than they were decades ago, which is why the traditional dating playbook has expired. Older women are radiating confidence with their thriving careers and financial independence, and that seems to have reshaped what women look for in a partner. In 2025, "The Tamron Hall Show" pursued the phenomenon of women choosing to date younger people and it gave viewers insight into why this dynamic is taking off.

In the interview, journalist Emily Leibert, who wrote the article, "Should You Date a Younger Man?" for The Cut, explained how women grew up being told to find a man who could provide for them financially. But as modern women have continued to make a name for themselves in today's society and achieve their own financial success, that formula has changed. Leibert put it simply: "Hi mom, I am the rich man...I don't need anyone to provide for me. So now the question is, what are you bringing to the table?"

When thoughts of financial security are off the table, anyone can do as they please. So, older women can prioritize genuine fun, sparks, and pure compatibility over everything else. While there's no single right or wrong answer to the formula for love, a relationship that energizes you, no matter your partner's age, is a win every single time.
