Older Women Radiate Confidence With These 5 Habits
It's not uncommon to develop a fear of aging. Some women in particular, who feel their self-worth is inextricably tied to their beauty and youth, can even see 30 as a terrifying threshold. On TikTok, many members of Gen Z are obsessed with anti-aging routines and finding ways to look forever young. "I think when you're young, it's just hard to imagine that you will ever be not-young. It seems unglamorous and boring, and you place more of a premium on being attractive and youthful," wrote one Reddit user. "But as you get older, usually you find more than [surface-level] things that make life worth living."
In fact, many women report feeling significantly happier as they've matured, according to a study from The University of Melbourne. They've found ways to move beyond their fears and live joyfully. "I enjoy my own company a lot more now than I did when I was younger," wrote one Reddit user. There are plenty of celebrities who are confronting aging with confidence, but you don't need to be famous to reap the benefits of getting older. That's because the key to aging with confidence has everything to do with simple habits like learning more about yourself, setting clear boundaries, and worrying less about the opinions of others.
They focus on their own approval
While contemporary culture directs a lot of negative messaging toward aging women, the most confident older women are often those who simply decide not to buy into it. Instead, they're focusing on enjoying their time and living up to their own expectations for themselves. Sometimes that can feel uncomfortable, especially if you've spent years contorting yourself to suit other people's desires. But women who make the choice to focus less on other people's opinions — like when Michelle Obama gave a masterclass in unlearning people pleasing — feel freer and more empowered to be themselves.
In fact, rejecting society's attempts to define them can be a way for older women to reclaim some personal power. "I find a lot of confident older women stop asking the culture for permission. They move the goalposts from 'am I being approved of' to 'am I living how I want', and that flips the power dynamic," wrote one Reddit user. "They also get picky about whose opinions count, and they choose circles where women their age are visible and valued, because confidence is contagious."
They look beyond their appearance
Women have been raised being told their self-worth is tied to their appearance, which can put a lot of pressure on them to defy the natural course of aging. But basing your self-esteem on something so changeable can be a recipe for disappointment. After all, even the best esthetician can't totally erase the signs of aging. "I think the hyper focus on this idea that your worth is only based around your looks [our] age is pretty much a [self-fulfilling] prophecy," advised one Reddit user. "If that's what you focus on, you're gonna have a bad time no matter what other things you try to tell yourself to combat your basic worldview."
But the women who are shifting their attention to other aspects of their lives — rather than hyper-fixating on defying wrinkles and gray hair — are tying their sense of self to something that's far less likely to change. Instead, by focusing on things like work, friendships, and hobbies, these women are anchoring their lives in something consistent. Their intelligence, talent, and compassion are all sources of confidence and pride that won't inevitably fade with time.
They prioritize their health and strength
Instead of focusing on their appearances, many of the women who radiate confidence as they age are the ones who instead choose to focus on how their bodies feel and the things they can do. Instead of worrying about weight loss, they transform their relationship with exercise to nourish their bodies and minds. That means prioritizing their physical well-being with healthy habits like exercise, good nutrition, and ample sleep. After all, feeling physically healthy is often the best first step toward feeling mentally healthy, and caring for yourself is the foundation of self-confidence.
But focusing on wellness has additional benefits that, in turn, fuel a sense of empowerment. Those benefits include a sense of purpose, competency, and even community. "I also love being in a fitness club for women over 40, where we all do a weight training class 3 times a week," wrote one Reddit user. "It amazes me to look [around] the room and see women my age and older pumping iron and improving their strength and fitness. We're breaking the stereotypes of being elderly women and I find that so inspiring!"
They protect their peace
The most confident older women are the ones who are fiercely protective and discerning about the people they allow into their lives. They know time and energy are limited, and — when possible —choose to reserve those precious resources for the people who enrich their lives. Whether that means cutting ties with draining friends or moving forward from painful family relationships, they aren't afraid to stand up for their needs and boundaries. "I cut out people who made me feel bad," wrote one Reddit user. "This was mainly accomplished by getting a divorce. I was soooo unhappy and thought I was too old to move on. I moved on better than ever."
After all, it's hard to feel confident when you're surrounded by people who treat you disrespectfully, or who take more than they give. But having strong boundaries definitely doesn't mean keeping everyone at arm's length. After all, healthy friendships are among the most powerful sources of self-esteem. And the most empowered older women are the ones who limit their social circle to the people who build them up.
They learn what suits them
One way older women build their confidence is by learning the beauty and styling tips that best suit them. Rather than getting caught up in trends, these women have taken the time to figure out what pieces and routines make them feel their best. Then, they lean in hard. "I've learned about my skin and hair. I have a consistent skincare routine and know how to style my wavy, frizzy hair," wrote one Reddit user. "I learned how to pick out clothes that fit me well. I've practiced my makeup and have figured out what works and what doesn't."
For some women, that might mean familiarizing themselves with their color season or Kibbe body type to develop a shorthand on what outfits suit them best. It might also mean taking the time to educate themselves on skincare — or getting input from a dermatologist — to learn which skin type they have and which treatments will be most effective. They developed the skills to style their hair the way they like it, and as a result, they feel confident in how they're presenting themselves.
