Heels, Flats, & More: The Fall 2026 Shoe Trends That Should Be On Your Radar

Fall shoe trends for 2026 are bringing the best of both worlds: self-expression walking in lockstep with comfort. Gone are the days of sacrificing style for walkability or feeling outdated but comfortable. Now we get to have our cake and eat it, too. In order to get the freshest take on fall 2026's hottest shoe trends, Women spoke exclusively with personal stylist Cynthia Kennedy, an image consultant and creator of Your Style Transformation Academy. Kennedy explains that the biggest shift this season was toward shoes with a little personality.

"After a number of seasons where we have been very much about quiet luxury and understated minimalism, fall 2026 is bringing a desire for shoes that add something to an outfit, whether it's through print, color, texture, or an unexpected silhouette," Kennedy tells Women, exclusively. But personality has to coexist with comfort this season. Because of this, cult-classics like Oxfords, ballet flats, boots, and loafers are proving essential to autumnal wardrobes. "It's the same story with the broader fashion direction for the season: more expressive, but still wearable," Kennedy adds. These shoe trends are guaranteed to make fall 2026 the most stylish season yet.

Oxfords, loafers, and derby shoes are fall 2026's favorite flats

The most coveted flats of 2026 come in an array of options; loafers, Oxfords, and Derby shoes are all trending as easy, everyday footwear. Plus, these versatile shoes are among the summer 2026 fashion trends that will help you seamlessly transition into fall. They're a comfortable choice for running errands or spending a day at the office, and these sturdy flats are stylish enough that they look refined and intentional.

Another plus is that loafers, Oxfords, and derby shoes all have a masculine undercurrent. This trend is taking over in all parts of fashion, and celebrity menswear outfits might make you want to raid your boyfriend's closet. "Menswear has an important part to play this fall in the form of a sleek Oxford or derby and an updated loafer," personal stylist Cynthia Kennedy tells Women, exclusively. Derby shoes, in particular, are a fall 2026 favorite because they look as polished as a dress shoe but have no heel. Kennedy offers styling tips for these sophisticated flats. "I love wearing them with ankle-length trousers or a pair of straight or relaxed jeans, and even with a midi skirt for contrast," she said. "You should keep the rest of the look modern enough so the shoe seems deliberate and not overly preppy." A structured tote and sleek headband add sharp accessories to the overall outfit.

Statement ballet flats are a more interesting version of the classic flats

Ballet flats will always be in style, but the classic and much-loved shoe is getting an upgrade for fall. Acting as a blank canvas, the ballet flat is taking on every fun design trend of 2026. "Instead of another basic black version, we're seeing versions in satin, animal prints, interesting colors, and ones with a sharper toe or an interesting finish," Cynthia Kennedy tells Women. This means that ballet flats are entering a more fun, daring territory. "A statement flat can be the personality of an otherwise plain ensemble," Kennedy goes on. "I would suggest a simple outfit with relaxed or straight-leg denim and a sweater or blazer to let the shoe do the talking."

One of the reasons ballet flats are so ideal in the autumn is because of their versatility. They offer more coverage than a sandal, making them a better choice for cooler nights, but they're still not as bulky as a boot. So, as the seasons change from summer to fall, the ballet flat is your best bet for easy footing.

Tall boots go with everything in the fall

Tall boots are one of the reasons fall and winter feel so stylish. The knee-high boots, virtually impossible to style comfortably in the summer, suddenly return to our wardrobes, elevating look after look. Going through the different styles that are trending for fall 2026, Cynthia Kennedy tells us, "We're seeing tall boots come back in force, from the classic riding boot, sleek knee-high styles, to the over-the-knee thigh-high versions for those feeling bold." She continues, "While the runways have been quite dramatic, street style is full of the riding boot variety."

Kennedy adds that the easiest tall boot to work with was the riding boot. "I suggest pairing them with a sweater dress, midi skirt, straight or slim jeans, or even longer shorts as the weather cools," she adds. "A chocolate brown or rich burgundy are great substitutes for black," she continues, so don't be afraid of mixing and matching different tones, and opting for unexpected colors.

Satin shoes have the power to transform any look

Satin shoes used to be reserved for very special occasions, like bridal heels. Or satin was used for niche footwear, like bedroom slippers. There was something about the fabric that seemed too lustrous for everyday use. Thankfully, fall 2026 is flipping that concept on its head. Satin shoes are everywhere. From mules to pumps to ballet flats, footwear is decked out in satin. On top of that, the trend is also focused on color saturation, with satin shoes emerging in all sorts of hues.

"I love this trend because texture can completely transform an otherwise simple outfit," Cynthia Kennedy exclusively tells Women. "A satin flat or kitten heel adds interest to a white shirt and blazer and a pair of jeans. My suggestion is to let the satin shoe be the focal point and not complicate the rest of the outfit." This means that satin shoes really do all of the heavy lifting.

Animal-print shoes are the most playful footwear of the season

Animal print is a favorite for fall 2026 footwear, and this is largely because there are so many options to choose from. Zebra, leopard, and snakeskin prints are trending hard, as are tiger, deer, and Dalmatian prints. Cruella de Vil would have loved fall 2026. This buffet of animal prints works equally well on boots, flats, and heels, as well as hybrid concepts like ballet-inspired sneakers. No shoe is immune to the elevating nature of animal prints.

Personal stylist Cynthia Kennedy offers perspective on the patterns. "I always tell my clients to think of animal print as a neutral," she tells Women. "A leopard flat will work great with denim, olive, chocolate brown, burgundy, camel, black, and even red." Kennedy also helpfully notes that for those who are new to patterns, shoes can feel like an easier place to experiment.

Pointed-toe shoes and boots elongate the silhouette

Pointed-toe shoes and boots are slated to be the ultimate fashionista shoes of fall 2026. While comfort and walkability are the priority for autumn, there can always be one exception for something gorgeous and a little impractical. But it's just because pointed-toe boots are so good. As clunky, chunky boots make up the outdated boot trends to step away from in fall and winter 2026, there's a new turn toward elongated boots and pumps with that signature, pointy toe.

"There's a certain elegance to a pointed toe because it can lengthen the leg line," Cynthia Kennedy explains to Women, exclusively. Her favorite way to style pointed-toe boots is under wider-leg trousers, because the sleek toe gives the outfit a more refined finish. The baddie boots also look extra cool with a skirt, or even Bermuda-style shorts. The trick is to make sure the hem of the skirt or shorts covers the top of the boots for an elongated torso. Another key trend for fall 2026 is color, so Kennedy notes that bold boots in unexpected tones are a brilliant way to go. Burgundies, bright blues, or harvest gold tones are great choices for the fall.
