Similarly, big-screen adaptations of sci-fi novels have seen older titles like "Dune" and "Project Hail Mary" receiving renewed interest, while genre readers continue to enjoy new titles. Upcoming fall releases naturally reflect these trends, with everyone from romance readers to sci-fi lovers having something to look forward to.

Avid readers may recognize Marlon James as the author of acclaimed novels like "The Book of Night Women" and "A Brief History of Seven Killings," the latter of which earned a Booker Prize in 2015. The writer is continuing his exploration of Jamaican history and culture for fall 2026, with his historical fiction novel "The Disappearers" slated to hit the shelves on September 1.

Pre-release readers describe "Taipei Story" as a quiet, character-driven novel that's worth picking up for its relatable examination of the Chinese diaspora and touching exploration of grief on both interpersonal and community levels. Though early reviewers mark the writing style and content as distinct from Kuang's more fantastical novels, this fall release will appeal to readers of literary fiction while still being enjoyed by several long-time fans of the author. 

Autumn is the perfect season to pick up a witchy romance, making Morgan Elizabeth's upcoming fall release one to add to your TBR as soon as possible. The New Jersey-based author is making her traditional publishing debut on September 8 with "Meet Cute Magic," a cozy romance featuring a bookshop-owning witch and the grumpy grandson of the ghost she conjured.

Rosie Mayfield conjures a ghost to break the family curse wreaking havoc on her love life. The spirit agrees, but only in exchange for Rosie's assistance in transitioning to the other side. To fulfill this bargain, the bookstore owner must enlist the help of Jack Haggerty, the grumpy shop owner across the street who also happens to be the grandson of the conjured ghost. While the two make for an unexpected team, they soon find themselves resisting the brewing chemistry between them. 

So far, "Meet Cute Magic" has received favorable reviews from early readers, being described as a combination of the small town charm of "Gilmore Girls" and the witchy energy of "Practical Magic" and "Sabrina the Teenage Witch." Readers also highlight the humorous shenanigans and grumpy x sunshine dynamic as standout elements. So, if you're looking for witchy romances to add to your fall TBR, this upcoming release definitely fits the bill.

Next, Emily St. John Mandel has established herself as a titan of the sci-fi genre with acclaimed novels like "Sea of Tranquility" and "Station Eleven," the latter of which was adapted into an HBO series. For fall 2026, the Canadian writer is releasing "Exit Party" on September 15, promising a dystopian tale equipped with fractured timelines. The novel is set in 2031 L.A. following the collapse of the United States, and follows Ari Waker and her roommate as they venture past makeshift settlements and Red Cross tents to reach a Silverlake party. While the glittering night kicks off with drinking and dancing, a sudden shift that involves the disappearance of the party's host, Kareem, sets Ari on a time-bending mystery.

"Exit Party" has been praised for its sharp prose and compelling characters, with themes of survival and surveillance resonating even as they are explored through intersecting realities and competing identities. Reviewers recommend St. John Mandel's "The Singer's Gun" as a prerequisite reading, but this title is still enjoyable as a standalone. With all this in mind, avid sci-fi enjoyers should be sure to pick up this St. John Mandel title when it hits shelves this fall.

Those who enjoy fantasy-romance hybrids can expect another compelling entry into the genre this fall. Ann Liang's novel "To Dream in Darkness" is scheduled to release on October 27, boasting a historical setting and fantastical premise. Set during China's Age of Brilliance, the novel centers around Rujia, the noble god of healing, who strikes a bargain with Death God when he comes to claim her soul. She promises to help lift the curse that has been plaguing the cruel but beautiful Death in exchange for a one month postponement, but the time-buying deal has unintended consequences that force the two into an unlikely allyship. They must rescue the Celestial Palace's crown prince together to placate the other gods and restore the balance that Rujia's bargain upended.

So far, early readers have described "To Dream in Darkness" as beautiful and devastating, naming Liang's descriptive writing as a true standout. The slow-burn romance between the main characters, was another noteworthy aspect, with the romantic lead leaving several reviewers swooning. Given the Chinese setting and use of mythology, the upcoming title is especially recommended for fans of xianxia novels and C-dramas.

Sports romance has received a lot of love throughout the 2020s, with Simone Soltani continuing the trend with a third installment in her F1 saga this fall. The Washington, D.C.-raised author is publishing "Crash Into You" on November 10. While the title is an entry into her "Lights Out" series, each novel can easily be read as a standalone.

While the press has wreaked havoc on Ava Farahani's life, she can't manage to stay away from the world of Formula 1 that she grew up in. Meanwhile, Zaid Yousef is returning to driving after a crash left him with major injuries and an incomplete contract. The two cross paths during a preseason event, sharing a hot night together that ultimately results in an unexpected pregnancy. While they're both open to becoming parents, their situation is complicated by the fact that Zaid is a major competitor to the team that is led by Ava's father. 

Leading up to the release date, Soltani's "Crash Into You" has cultivated high-star ratings from early readers. Not only do reviewers praise the execution of the often divisive unplanned pregnancy trope, but many also appreciated the balance between the romance and F1 action, with the sports setting being noted as particularly realistic and immersive.
