If you're a fragrance fan, you've probably noticed big changes in perfume trends over the past decade. "Ten years ago, a woman would find one bottle in her twenties and wear it until someone told her she smelled like her mother. Now she has six or seven and picks based on where she's going and how she wants to feel when she gets there. That's a completely different buying behavior, and it's why fragrance wardrobes exploded," Divya Gugnani, founder and CEO of 5 SENS, a clean fine fragrance house, exclusively tells Women.

With a rise in discovery sets, an informative fragrance scene on social media, a renewed focus on wellness-related scents, and more awareness of the perfume mistakes you're probably making, there's never been a more exciting time to upgrade your fragrance collection. But what should you look for in 2026 to keep your perfumes personal yet current? We ask Gugnani about this year's biggest trends, and she gives us the scoop on what you need to know about each one.

"Gourmand has been the dominant family for a few years, but 2026 is where it got sophisticated," Divya Gugnani tells Women exclusively, referring to fragrances that draw inspiration from some of our favorite sweet foods and drinks. "We've moved past the straight vanilla and sugar era of teenage body spray into spicy vanillas and more elevated compositions with freshness, citrus, and woods to balance the sweetness. It's dessert with an adult palate," she adds.

Food has become a central part of some of 2026's biggest fragrance releases, particularly Viktor&Rolf's latest addition to its Bonbon collection, which is available in Cola Fizz, Berry Jelly, and Caramel Crunch (you can try each in Viktor&Rolf's Bonbon Fragrance Discovery Trio). Lattafa is also a major player in the sophisticated gourmand space by way of its Khamrah fragrance. It offers a warm, spicy vanilla scent with notes of amber and cinnamon for a deeply sweet evening scent. For a less intense take on this that can be worn during the day, try Pacifica's Amber Cocoa Gourmand Body Mist. It has notes of warm vanilla, cocoa, and coffee that will get you ready for the day ahead.

While sophisticated, sweeter scents have become all the rage with the rise of gourmand fragrances, so have more serious and mature aromas. Divya Gugnani exclusively shares that musky scents, soft woods, clean iris, and slight amber fragrances are concurrently trending, offering an even more grown-up alternative to the fruitier, sweeter gourmand boom. "The appeal is intimacy. It doesn't announce you in an elevator; it just makes you smell expensive up close," Gugnani says of this more understated trend.

Mugler's Angel Blush is notoriously musky with amber tones and just a hint of gourmand, so you'll be doubly on trend. It's not too heavy for daytime and can easily be worn at night, too (we've got you covered if you want to know exactly what an amber perfume smells like like). Calvin Klein's Obsession will also help you tap into this more grown-up movement. It combines an amber musk with the likes of bergamot, mandarin, and incense, creating a more suave scent that's perfect for the evening. There are plenty of other sophisticated perfumes perfect for older women on the market as well.

Divya Gugnani exclusively tells Women that 2026 is also about shopping for scents based on a feeling, mood, or desire rather than a specific scent preference. "You see scents built and marketed around a state: focus, calm, confidence, sensuality. Ingredient-wise, this shows up as fragrance borrowing from aromatherapy without becoming aromatherapy," Gugnani explains, sharing that this trend shift actually inspired 5 SENS. "Bergamot, neroli, vetiver, cedar, and green fig appear in fine fragrance far more than they did five years ago, blended so they read as luxurious rather than clinical," she adds.

To get in on this trend, seek out fragrances that are more spa-inspired for an instant mood boost. Cyklar's Perfume Oil in Bergamot Bond gives soothing massage oil vibes, but with all the benefits of a perfume. Perfume oils are particularly great if you want your scent to have extra staying power, as they tend to last much longer than an eau de parfum. Equally, Salt & Stone's Hair & Body Mist in Neroli & Basil is gender neutral and provides a clean, spa-esque scent (just make sure you take steps to ensure it doesn't damage your hair when using it as a hair perfume). Divya Gugnani tells us that 2026 is all about layering perfumes for a more personalized creation, allowing the wearer to stand out from the crowd. "It's how a generation raised on customization treats perfume, and it's why brands are launching in families that are designed to be mixed rather than as standalone statements," she says. If you're looking to try the layering trend, Gugnani recommends getting in on two trends at once by reaching for a scent with musky notes. "It's the best layering base there is, which matters now that so many women are stacking two or three scents," she says. "A good musk sits underneath anything and makes the whole combination read as one fragrance instead of two arguing," she adds.

These are perfect for daytime, as they won't come across as overpowering or too deep. In a similar vein to the rise of more serious scents, plum offers a deeper and darker, more sophisticated take on the classic flirty, fruity, and floral perfume. This trend is a new iteration of the sugary sweet, fruity YK2 scents many millennial women grew up with, but they're now in their 30s and looking for a more grown-up, sultry upgrade.
