What '70s Star Kristy McNichol Looks Like Since Retiring From Acting In 2001
Of all the teen stars to have made their mark in the entertainment industry, Kristy McNichol was definitely an unforgettable one. Having risen to fame at a very young age, she scored some real hitters with roles in ABC's "Family" and "Little Darlings." But despite the overwhelming fame, McNichol chose to voluntarily withdraw from it all for a much quieter life back in 2001. Naturally, one would be curious to know how McNichol looks decades on from her sudden retirement. Similar to how these pictures of what Jan from "The Brady Bunch" looks like now sated our curiosity, a new photo of McNichol in 2026 has emerged for us to cure our interest.
The Instagram post above, made by McNichol's former "The Pirate Movie" co-star, Christopher Atkins, shows Atkins posing alongside McNichol (right) and Kari Michaelsen of "Gimme A Break!" fame (left). McNichol reunited with her former co-star for a celebratory showing of "The Pirate Movie" at Los Angeles' Westin Hotel on May 24, 2026. And dare we say it, the retired actor looks healthy and content, as well as looking great for her age. It seemed stepping away from the spotlight was the right decision for McNichol.
Kristy McNichol chose peace of mind over fame
Kristy McNichol's decision to depart Hollywood for good in 2001 was certainly abrupt and unexpected. But from the way she explained it, it's understandable why she chose to do so. At that point in time, the seasoned star was burned out and not handling her exploding stardom very well. Simply put, McNichol wanted to get away from it all and that's what she did when she left mid-way through filming season 5 of "Empty Nest." "Many people have asked me why I left the show. It was because I was suffering from manic depression [now more commonly called bipolar disorder], but I didn't want to talk about it at the time," McNichol revealed in a public statement, per Woman's World. Sadly, McNichol isn't alone in her struggles, with many celebs writing powerful memoirs about mental health.
And it seems McNichol has managed to find peace within herself. As in 2012, McNichol publicly and bravely came out as lesbian, explaining that she wants to "be open about who I am." Moreover, she has also put her acting experiences to good use, becoming an acting teacher and teaching young hopefuls about the industry and how to break into it. McNichol's journey teaches us some crucial lessons about life, and that there's always light at the end of every dark period.
