Lily Tomlin Says This Approach To Fights Helped Preserve Her Decades Long Relationship

Similar to how Joanna and Chip Gaines have marriage non-negotiables to keep their union strong, Lily Tomlin is also chipping in with her own relationship advice. And we think she's more than earned her right to do so, considering Tomlin has been with her lifelong partner Jane Wagner for over 50 years. They have been married for close to 14 of those years at the time of reporting. Throughout their time together, the couple has gone through thick and thin, and it's thanks to one crucial aspect of conflict resolution. In fact, the "Grace and Frankie" star said that it wasn't challenging for her to set aside her pride in wanting to be right after they had an argument.

"Usually, I'm the one who apologizes," Tomlin said candidly, per E! News, "It's not hard because I love her and can't bear for her to feel lonely for even five minutes." The accomplished comedian proceeded to add that it's important to put a handle on your temper and cool off, because slinging insults at your partner will only end up damaging the whole relationship in the long run. What's more, the six-time Emmy-award-winning actor emphasized how important it is to remember the "admiration and respect" you have for your partner (per People), and how it'll get you through the tough times.

Lily Tomlin doesn't cut corners when it comes to her friendships either

While Lily Tomlin's marriage is certainly a celeb marriage we think will stand the test of time, it seems "The Late Show" actor is an expert in making life-long friendships as well. Tomlin has had a close friendship with Hollywood legend Jane Fonda for more than four decades. The pair's friendship started during the filming of the comedy classic "9 to 5", though it nearly didn't happen since Tomlin herself was reluctant to initially join the project. "It took a year to convince her," Fonda exclusively shared during an appearance on Stephen Colbert's talk show, per Town & Country. But Tomlin relented despite her reservations, and it looks to be a choice she does not regret.

The duo has maintained their friendship to this day and has shown great chemistry both on-screen and off of it, reuniting as headliners for the hit Netflix comedy series "Grace and Frankie". They weren't afraid to show their appreciation for each other in the years since "9 to 5", even banding together for a TED Talk dedicated to highlight their years-long friendship. Fonda confessed that she's grateful that Tomlin helps keep her grounded and accountable, while Tomlin had this to say of her friend, "I look for someone ... who's decent, has a sense of justice and who thinks I'm worthwhile." It's clear that Tomlin has had the best of both worlds, both in romance and out of it.
