Joanna And Chip Gaines Have Marriage Non-Negotiables To Keep Them Going Strong

Maintaining a marriage in the public eye is difficult, and couples in Hollywood know that better than most. But this particular pair has endured through highs and lows, and while there have been times that Joanna and Chip Gaines sent divorce rumors flying, it seems those rumors have remained rumors. The "Fixer Upper" couple has been married for more than 20 years and has publicly revealed what they've done to make their marriage a success. Although they have admitted to going into counseling before tying the knot, the television star couple added that spending as much time together is crucial. So they incorporate weekly date nights on Tuesdays. 

In an exclusive interview with People in 2025, Joanna got candid about her marriage. "What we've realized in 22 years of marriage . . . is we still feel like newbies," Joanna shared with the publication, "Anytime you unlock a new thing, and you do it together, it only grows your relationship." Chip even added his two cents, and how from his perspective, their union remained strong because he lavished his wife with attention, gifts, and chased after her as if they were still dating. 

And it seemed to be working, as the couple appeared loved-up as they celebrated their 22nd anniversary in 2025, as seen on this Instagram Reel. The pair were dancing together, laughing and enjoying one another's company, alongside a caption that reads, "Happy Anniversary—Here's to learning new things the older we get!"

It's amazing to see how far the couple has come, as seen in these side-by-side pics of Joanna and Chip from their HGTV debut to now. Not only have their careers grown, but so have their family. The home renovation stars share five children together, unveiling that they banded together to make as stable and idyllic a family life as possible, considering their highly publicized careers. "They're so young, and we want to give them the chance of a normal childhood," Joanna exclusively told People in 2020, before adding further that the couple tried their hardest to raise their children on the proper values to make them well-adjusted, independent adults. 

And it seems their parenting efforts are bearing fruit. Two of their children have left and gone to college, with the Gaines' daughter, Ella, setting off in May 2025. In a heartfelt, tear-jerking message that Joanna posted an Instagram Reel, the veteran media personality communicated her pride, hope, and slight melancholy in light of her daughter leaving the family home. "Praying for all you mamas who are planning and prepping for graduation," Joanna wrote in the caption. "We did our very best. They will soar."
