Side-By-Side Pics Of Joanna & Chip Gaines From Their HGTV Debut To Now

Chip and Joanna Gaines first launched their show "Fixer Upper" in 2013 on HGTV. The show became a massive success, launching the two into stardom and propelling them forward as entrepreneurs. While the world knows them now as a power couple, once upon a time, they were newbies to life in front of the camera. A clip of their casting tape from 2012 shows the two as fresh-faced youngsters eager to launch their show.

There's a lot less glitz and glamour in their 2012 debut pilot, with Chip and Joanna sitting next to each other on a sofa in casual outfits. Compare this early shot to Chip and Joanna at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards in September 2022. Joanna looked stunning in her red dress, while Chip appeared dapper in his suit. Sure, they looked a little older — a decade will change anyone — but the couple also came across as happy and appeared more sophisticated and polished compared to their HGTV debut. Joanna Gaines, in particular, has undergone a gorgeous transformation. Chip and Joanna have changed in other ways, too. They've welcomed five children and they've gone on to create a full home decor empire. Their brand, Magnolia, reaches magazines, books, a TV network, as well as stores and a hotel in Waco, Texas. Clearly, their instinct for style has served them well.

Chip and Joanna Gaines said they were so busy they didn't get to stop and smell the roses

The couple have fielded all kinds of challenges in their rise to fame from their early HGTV debut. For one, they have navigated gossip and media whispers, and Chip and Joanna Gaines have sent divorce rumors flying on several occasions. In spite of this, though, the two have stuck it out and made it work.

While sitting down with Jenna Bush Hager and her sister, Barbara Bush, on Today in November 2023, Chip and Joanna voiced all the ways in which their life has changed since the early days. But such explosive success also came with more than a few challenges and losses. Chip described how hard they worked and said, "Man, a lot happened and you really didn't get to stop and smell the roses while it was occurring." While Chip and Joanna had to sacrifice a lot, they also gained so much along the way. Chip teased Joanna about their financial success. "What is it that you love most about having money versus us not having money at the beginning?" he asked, harking back to their early days. While he was joking, Chip's point is a valid one; the couple are now incredibly successful, and that's got to be a satisfying part of their transformation — Chip and Joanna Gaines have become real power players.
