Summer 2026 may as well be deemed the comeback season. Several fashion trends from previous years have come back around in full forces, while certain pieces that were deemed out-of-style are back again in a fresh, new way. From the recent resurgence of the twee aesthetic — with its retro essence and Peter Pan collars — to the '90s capri pant, this summer is slated to be full of nostalgia. Not to be forgotten are the once-panned wedge shoe that reigned supreme in the 2010s, which have proven relevant all over again. 

Capturing the evolving nature of street style, TikTok fashion predictions chart the return of '90s aesthetics as well as the Y2K mania that has taken over. For instance, there are countless celeb outfits from the early '00s that we'd wear all over again. More precisely, there are particular celeb outfits that prove 2001 was an iconic year for pop star fashion. But the net of influence charts even wider than the early aughts; the 1960s shift dress has become timeless yet again, thanks to its emphasis on comfort and breathability, a particularly desirable attribute during hot summer months. With so much to love from the past, the summer of 2026 is sure to be sizzling. 

Twee fashion has charmed us once again, and the summer of 2026 is guaranteed to be full of vintage whimsy. The trend was extremely popular in the early 2000s and died out around 2015, as people steered away from colorful textiles in favor of minimalist styles. But the desire to become whimsical has once again emerged, and twee is the perfect scratch for this itch. 

The trend is both cute and retro. Think of Zooey Deschanel's character Jessica Day in the TV show "New Girl." Bright, bubbly prints dominate looks and mismatched patterns make an outfit that much more lively. It's less about being sexy and more about DIY fun and creativity. Polka dots are a huge part of twee, as are collared shirts. From Peter Pan collars to ornamental, high-contrast collars as well as sailor collars and cardigans with collars, twee loves a statement neckline. On TikTok, fashion forecaster Karya Schanilec broke down in a video everything about twee that was huge in the 2010s and will be huge again this summer. In terms of footwear, Schanilec explained that Mary Jane shoes are on a big revival kick and Mary Jane heels are even more popular. Loafers, of course, also work perfectly within the twee aesthetic as do Oxford shoes and Brogues, which give the outfit a polished finish. Small socks work nicely with all of these shoes, as do colorful tights, which are another key element of twee style. 

Shift dresses, an iconic part of '60s fashion, are trending hard again for summer 2026. There's a functional reason for their popularity; the look is both extremely comfortable and always stylish. The simple silhouette captures mod fashion, a trend that came out of Britain in the 1960s and became beloved all over the world thanks to its sharp tailoring and its preppy flare. It favored mini skirts and bright patterns, which morphed together to influence the shift dress. 

The style typically falls short on the body, with the hemline stopping around the mid-thigh, though it can certainly be longer or shorter depending on one's proclivities. The shift dress drops straight from the shoulders and doesn't concern itself with form-fitting restrictions. The neckline tends to have a high scoop or a boat shape, giving it that timeless, nostalgic magic.

Fashion forecasters on TikTok continuously rave about the effortlessness of the shift dress. Style icon Emily Howard showed off a short, brown shift dress in a video and wrote in the caption: "Nothing easier than a linen mini shift dress for summer...dress it up or down it's always chic & zero thought required." Throw on a pair of sunglasses and that's it. Summer 2026 never looked so fine. 

After a big spike around 2010, fringe pants faded on the fashion radar. It may have come from an over-saturation with festival-wear, but the western-inspired slacks receded and were quickly forgotten. But for summer 2026, fringe pants are hot all over again. From denim to leather pants, fringe detailing adds movement and a dramatic point of textured interest. 

Fashion forecaster @thedanabarnett drew our attention to this trend on TikTok. In a video, she wrote: "My fav '90s/2000s fashion trends that are making a comeback in 2026," and highlighted fringe trousers because of their effortless impact. Other TikTokers followed suit, showing how to style high-waisted, fringe denim for the summer. Taylor Mullowney showed a video of herself styling Mother fringe jeans with a black top and a western belt with, of course, a pair of sunglasses. For those who can't quit wide-leg denim — and why would you want to since it earns a place on the hottest denim trends of 2026 that demand a spot in your closet – this new addition of fringe adds personality to jeans. 

Of all of the footwear trends to come back around, wedges have proven the most sought-after for summer 2026/ The shoe trend was hugely popular in 2010, both in sandal and sneaker form thanks to the success of the Isabel Marant wedge sneaker. While the style fell out of fashion shortly after, it has made a strong revival this summer. 

Wedge sandals and sneakers alike are proving their usefulness once again, though for the summer, the sandal is getting a little more traction. The wedge heel really is a phenomenon; it offers the statuesque height that a traditional heel gives but with much more comfort because weight is distributed across the foot. On top of that, wedges are easy to style thanks to their versatility and they scratch that nostalgic itch for fashion from the early aughts.

TikTokers are all over this resurrected fashion trend. Fashion forecaster @oklaurizzle said that wedge interpretations in 2026 will be much sleeker than their 2010 predecessors. She also predicted that Isabel Marant wedge sneakers will be absolutely everywhere. Fashion content creator @anita_avenue also explained that wedges are set to be the hottest footwear of summer 2026 because they give height without the pain. But this summer's wedges are more elevated. Thick, cork bases from 2010 have been replaced by more artistic, sleek bases with animal print and metallic finishes.
